In 1944, due to shortages created by World War II. J.L. Hirst, R.W. Nobelius, H.R. Wardle, H. Wise and J. Eudey came together to form the first co-op in Emerald to evenly distribute provisions to help those in the community, which is still standing today.The Emerald Co-Op has huge historical and social significance for the town of Emerald as it changed the way the community worked by coming together to help the townsfolk for common benefit, that is still seen today. Vendors brochure for auction, Saturday 26 January 1960 (?), of 34 garden allotments. Includes locality plan. No year date on brochure. Describes rich mountain soil, beautiful flowering trees and shrubs, formed roads with access to every block. Electric light telephone etc. Carramar was built by Carl Axel Nobelius in 1898. It was later owned by Mrs Mirams and used as a nursing home. The garden had many rare and beautiful trees and shrubs used by Nobelius for propagation. C.A. Nobelius's son, Arch Nobelius, started the Nobelius & Co. Estate Agency later bought by H.B. Further research is also needed on the shopfronts shown.This item holds historical significance as it shows several vehicles that are no longer in make as well as how emerald and several of its shop fronts looked in the past. It also holds social significance as these shops would have been a part of how people interacted within the township in the past.
