This christening gown belonged to Frances Nobelius (1920-2015) and is believed to have been given to her by her mother Nina Ayers (nee Casement, 1891-1872). It was likely passed to Nina by her own mother, Mary Frances Balharry (1869-1898), and reused by the family over multiple generations of christenings. At the time it was made - before Nina's christening in 1891 - christening gowns usually featured a very long skirt decorated with extensive embroidery - often modelled on contemporary women's fashion. They were long-lasting family heirlooms, typically passed from mother to daughter.This gown was passed through several generations living in the local area, including members of the Nobelius family. It is an example of an element of late 19th century christening practices, and shows the reuse of christening gowns through decades and generations.This white lawn cotton christening dress is a long line gown with a simple bodice. This coat hanger was donated with two items of clothing made by Pauline Nobelius while in Glen Waverly High School in 1967-8. While it has greater significance alongside those items, independently it is a good example of a style of coat hanger in use in the 1960s. Wooden hangers were often preferred over the wire version as their wider shape was less likely to crease or damage clothes. Ruby Nobelius, who is also known as Ethel Ruby Nobelius Hayes, was born in 1887, dating the photograph to 1908. She is wearing an Edwardian style dress with a rounded, soft updo popularised by the 'Gibson Girl' aesthetic of the 1910s. Four years prior, Ruby was a bridesmaid in the wedding of her brother, Carl Oscar Nobelius, to Florence Prescott in 1904 at the age of 17. This image captures the fashion style of lifestyle of wealthier Australian women in the 1910s. It also displays the social significance placed on 21st birthdays in the 1900s. As she is dressed in a gown and photographed in a studio, it indicates a momentous occasion deemed important enough to commemorate and document. This pyjama case was produced in the 1930s by Joy-Toys, an Australian toy company founded in South Yarra in the early 1920s. It was gifted to Elaine Morris (then Nobelius - the granddaughter of Carl Axel Nobelius) at an early - perhaps 3rd - birthday. Elaine was born in 1934, so it would have been gifted around 1937. Several other Joy-Toys monkeys were made with hands and feet, which might either have fallen off or been removed over the past century or which may not have been included on this model. Some other models of Joy-Toys monkeys were based on the characters of British illustrator Lawson Wood, who used a wide cast of monkeys and other animals in his work. The zipper was made in Australia by Lightning, indicating that the monkey's components were also likely made locally.This pyjama case belonged to a member of the Nobelius family, and reflects a style of toymaking that today is far out of fashion from a distinctive company that is no longer in business.The monkey has a hollow body, with the interior lined with orange satin fabric and closed by a zipper. The shape of the monkey is filled out by the case's intended purpose - storing pyjamas. The head is stuffed, and features a face made of felt molded over buckram, with painted features in red (mouth and nostrils) and black (closed eyelids and eyelashes). Outside of the face, the monkey is covered in synthetic brown 'fur'. It is possible that the monkey once had hands and feet which have since been removed or lost. The monkey's limbs and tails are also stuffed and separated from the hollow body. The head and arms of the monkey are on joints allowing them to rotate 360 degrees. The monkey also has small furless fabric ears. This item was likely owned by Elaine Morris (then Nobelius) as a teenager, some time in the late 1940s. This is corroborated by the existence of advertising for this specific product from 1949, and its likely contemporaneity with VEMU2293 which has adverting from a similar time period. It was found in a Monkey Pyjama Case (VEMU2288) that belonged to Elaine, alongside several other items of clothing (VEMU2293-5). It was manufactured by the Sutex company, which had multiple manufacturing locations in Victoria - including Inglewood and Bendigo.This item belonged to a member of the Nobelius family and is a identifiable example of 1940s clothing.This item is a set of Sutex "Satinswade Pantees". The original advertisement describes them as follows: "Well cut, elastic at waist, cuff leg, in shades Peach and White. For excellent wearing." Seventy years later, this pair - the white version, though it now looks closer to cream - has suffered significant damage, with three large cuts from the waistline, significant staining, and holes from wear between the legs. The donor of this sign had advised that the sign dates from the 1980s and has provided information about the proprietors at that time (who were not part of the Nobelius family). The agency was originally founded by Arch Nobelius, one of the sons of famous Emerald Nurseryman, Carl Axel Nobelius in 1922. In 1925, Reality 11nd won the Royal Melbourne Show in the division for pony stallions measuring between 13 and 14 hands. This photograph commemorates and celebrates then victory of the Emerald-born horse. Reality 11nd was owned and bred by William Horswood (1875-1938), an Emerald resident. William was well-connected to the local community and to other local families; his sister, Anna, was married to Conrad Percival Nobelius.This photograph documents the victory of a horse bred in Emerald in the 1925 Royal Melbourne Show. This Baby Health book belonged to the parents of Jack Charman who was born on 24 September 1944. Jack's weight was recorded at regular intervals from 12 October 1944 until 31 October 1946. The Baby Health Centre was at Ferntree Gully. A small baptismal certificate for Jack Charman was placed inside the Baby Health book.The Charmans were an early Emerald family who, in the 1900s, ran the Brookdale Guest House. Walter (Wally) Baguley 1920-1994 joined the military forces in 1940 under the title of Citizen Military Services Personnel. Earlier in his life, he worked for the Nobelius Nurseries where he became skilled at grafting. Later, he worked with the Postmaster General's Department.Item is in good condition. This postcard belonged to Blanche Constance (Nina) Casement 1891-1972 whose fiancé, Arthur Woodzell Ayers (1887-1964), enlisted with the Australian Imperial Force in 1914 and served at Gallipoli and the Western Front. Arthur was completing officer training at Oxford New College 23 Feb 1917 - 27 May 1917 when he sent these postcards. Nina and Arthur married in 1919 and moved to Avonsleigh in 1929. This needle case belonged to Nina Ayers (nee Casement) 1891-1972. She was taught sewing by her aunt, Blanche Casement, with whom Nina lived after her mother died when she was seven. NIna and her husband, Arthur Ayers 1887-1964 lived in Avonsleigh 1929-1964. Nina, in turn, gave this needle case to her daughter Frances Ayers who later married the grandson of Carl Axel Nobelius.This needle case belonged to a local woman whose daughter was related by marriage to the Nobelius family, and it tells a story of sewing skills passed from mother to daughter.Attractive small needle case with red background and red and gold lettering. He had served in the first AIF in World War I and was wounded at Passchendaele in 1917.
