... ...Nobelius Family...This pyjama case belonged to a member of the Nobelius family, and reflects a style of toymaking that today is far out of fashion from a distinctive company that is no longer in business. ...This pyjama case was produced in the 1930s by Joy-Toys, an Australian toy company founded in South Yarra in the early 1920s. It was gifted to Elaine Morris (then Nobelius - the granddaughter of Carl Axel Nobelius) at an early - perhaps 3rd - birthday. Elaine was born in 1934, so it would have been gifted around 1937. Several other Joy-Toys monkeys were made with hands and feet, which might either have fallen off or been removed over the past century or which may not have been included on this model. Some other models of Joy-Toys monkeys were based on the characters of British illustrator Lawson Wood, who used a wide cast of monkeys and other animals in his work. The zipper was made in Australia by Lightning, indicating that the monkey's components were also likely made locally.This pyjama case belonged to a member of the Nobelius family, and reflects a style of toymaking that today is far out of fashion from a distinctive company that is no longer in business.The monkey has a hollow body, with the interior lined with orange satin fabric and closed by a zipper. The shape of the monkey is filled out by the case's intended purpose - storing pyjamas. The head is stuffed, and features a face made of felt molded over buckram, with painted features in red (mouth and nostrils) and black (closed eyelids and eyelashes). Outside of the face, the monkey is covered in synthetic brown 'fur'. It is possible that the monkey once had hands and feet which have since been removed or lost. The monkey's limbs and tails are also stuffed and separated from the hollow body. The head and arms of the monkey are on joints allowing them to rotate 360 degrees. The monkey also has small furless fabric ears. Walter (Wally) Baguley 1920-1994 joined the military forces in 1940 under the title of Citizen Military Services Personnel. Earlier in his life, he worked for the Nobelius Nurseries where he became skilled at grafting. Later, he worked with the Postmaster General's Department.Item is in good condition. The Baguley family are long term residents of the Emerald District. Walter Baguley served with the Citizen Military Services Personnel during World War II and this belt may date from that time and may have been used by him.Khaki Green fabric belt. The photo is a landscape orientation photograph and is mounted with an oval, white mat board in a mahogany timber style hanging frame. At some point the photo has been touched up with a painted tree in the left-hand side foreground of the picture, partially covering the identity of one of the group of picnickers. More information about the people in the group has been detailed on the back of the photo frame. The photo frame chops into part of the photo which is also slightly less sharp and blurry compared to the original one printed on cabinet card.On back of photograph: "Alice Richardson first grandchild for Granny & Grandad Hirst. Theo was born in Seville, Victoria on December 21st, 1898 to the Gray family - a family with some local prominence in Wandin and Seville. Theo lived much of his life in the area - though his three years in the New South Wales Volunteer Defence Corps during WW2 indicate he might have spent time interstate - and died in Gembrook on June 12th, 1979. While clearly on a pine plantation, it is unclear exactly where and when the photograph was taken, though given Theo's residence nearby it may have been on the Nobelius property. Theo is too unclear in the photograph to determine his age; we estimate this photograph was most likely taken between the 1920s and 1940s, but this is only an estimation.This photograph captures the economically and historically significant forestry industry of the region in the early 20th century. Forestry, among other industries, changed the local landscape and brought economic opportunities to the region. This photograph shows some of the scale of that industry.This is a small black and white photograph on yellowing white, glossy paper with a black backing. The backing is damaged in places, with sections missing revealing the white paper behind it. The reverse has several pencil inscriptions, while on the front is one written in pen. There is a small margin of approximately 5mm between the photograph and the edge of the item. The photograph's foreground is filled with felled logs, entirely covering the ground. In the background, a man stands on the logs, with forest behind him. The scene appears to take place on a hill, sloping down to the right.
