The Three Bears brand played off the enduring popularity of children’s nursery ...[1] Three Bears Porridge Flaked Oatmeal Bag: This textile bag originates from Canadian Cereal Mills Ltd., which marketed "Three Bears" flaked oatmeal. Popular in the early 1900s to mid-century, this product combined functional packaging with a child-friendly incentive — a cut-out cloth doll. The practice of printing toys, games, or clothing patterns on flour or oat sacks was a common marketing strategy, encouraging reuse and appealing to families during times when thrift and creativity were essential, especially during the Depression and wartime years. The Three Bears brand played off the enduring popularity of children’s nursery tales, while the doll encouraged children (and parents) to reuse packaging creatively. This object captures a unique intersection of food marketing, household resourcefulness, and early 20th-century domestic life. [2] Mammy Self-Raising Flour Bag: This item is a mid-20th-century Australian flour bag, branded “Mammy Oven Puff”, produced by A. Mammy Products Pty Ltd in West Footscray, Victoria. The use of the name "Mammy" and the caricatured illustration draws on a now widely recognised and offensive racial stereotype originating from American minstrel culture, commonly used in product branding in the early-to-mid 20th century. While the bag reflects a specific period in Australian domestic and commercial packaging history, it also exemplifies racially insensitive advertising that would be considered inappropriate and harmful by today’s standards. Such items are preserved today in museum collections to help document past social attitudes, consumer culture, and the evolution of racial representation in advertising. [3] Bandung Blue Triangle Brand Flour Bag: This bag represents a mid-20th-century Australian flour export product, particularly aimed at international markets such as Indonesia (as indicated by "Bandung"). The “Blue Triangle Brand” was likely a registered trademark used by a Melbourne-based flour mill engaged in both local and overseas trade. The use of durable cloth bags for bulk flour was common prior to the widespread adoption of paper and plastic packaging. These bags were often reused domestically for household textiles, clothing patterns, or storage. The export reference (Bandung) underscores Australia's historical agricultural trade ties with Southeast Asia, especially in wheat and flour exports. – Roy SCHMIDT resided with his siblings Mabel and Jack at ‘Parklands’ 85 Lake Avenue Natimuk home of Heinrich Friederick ‘Heiny’ & Minna Christina SUDHOLZ nee LANGE and their children Louis, Sophie, Alma, Lena (Roy's Mother), Florence 'Florrie' and Edward ‘Ted’.[1] Three Bears Porridge Flaked Oatmeal Bag: A vintage cloth oatmeal bag printed with black ink on both sides. One side is branded with "Three Bears Porridge – Flaked Oatmeal", showing an image of three bears behind a gate, referencing the well-known “Goldilocks and the Three Bears” fairytale. The opposite side features a printed cut-out doll design, showing a young girl with curly hair holding a bouquet of flowers, intended to be sewn into a stuffed toy. Instructions note that the reverse side (the doll’s back) could be obtained from a second bag. The design combines product branding with a promotional activity for children, typical of early- to mid-20th-century grocery packaging aimed at reuse. [2] Mammy Self-Raising Flour Bag: A small vintage cloth flour bag with printed branding in faded red, blue, and black inks. The front of the bag features a central image of a caricatured smiling African American woman wearing a headscarf. The text is unevenly faded but legible in parts. The bag has a rectangular shape with an open top edge and signs of previous use, including creasing and some fraying at the corners. [3] Bandung Blue Triangle Brand Flour Bag: A large, rectangular vintage cloth flour bag made of cream-coloured calico or cotton. The front of the bag is printed in bold blue ink with branding and export information. It prominently features a large triangular logo reading “Blue Triangle Brand” and numerous lines of text in block and stylised fonts. The bag is open at the top with frayed edges, suggesting it was once machine-stitched shut and later opened.[1] Three Bears Porridge Flaked Oatmeal Bag: Front side (branding side): "THREE BEARS Porridge – FLAKED OATMEAL" "7 Lbs. Net." “Packed and guaranteed by Canadian Cereal Mills Ltd., Toronto” Reverse side (doll pattern): "This is the Front for Three Bears Cut-out Doll" "In order to complete this Doll it will be necessary to obtain the Back Design from another Bag of Three Bears Rolled Oats or Oatmeal." [2] Mammy Self-Raising Flour Bag: Main product name: “MAMMY OVEN PUFF SELF-RAISING FLOUR” Additional text: “The Only Creamed Flour” “Prepared with phosphate aerator” “A. MAMMY PRODUCTS PTY. LTD., Sunshine Rd., West Footscray. Phone: FW 7321” “7 LBS. NET” (near top edge, very faded) [3] Bandung Blue Triangle Brand Flour Bag: The bag is printed with the following: “10270” “G.W.C | H.L” “BANDUNG” “BEST AUSTRALIAN” “BLUE TRIANGLE BRAND” (inside the triangle logo) “GROWER & GRINDERS” (curved around the logo) “Patent Roller” “MELBOURNE” “FLOUR” “50 LBS. GROSS WHEN PACKED” These inscriptions indicate that this flour bag was manufactured in Melbourne, Australia, and was likely exported to Bandung, Indonesia.farm equipment, flour, milling, oats, mammy, bandung blue, schmidt, sudholz, parklands -

It has a high interpretive capacity as an object associated with a tangible, physical process, presenting opportunities for understanding work practices at Nobelius Nursery and nurseries more generally. ...The name plate maker was used by a number of Nursery employees, contributing to intangible narratives of how stock at Nobelius Nursery was prepared for transport. It has a high interpretive capacity as an object associated with a tangible, physical process, presenting opportunities for understanding work practices at Nobelius Nursery and nurseries more generally. No similar name plate maker was identified after contact with and/or searches of collections held at National Museum of Australia, Museum Victoria, the Museum of Applied Arts & Sciences or the Australian Garden History Society, Victoria Branch. It is a rare example of its type in Australia. The name plate maker is of historic and social significance. It is associated with the Nobelius Nursery, the largest nursery in the southern hemisphere at its peak prior to WWI (Lyng 1927:75), where it was used from the early 1900s until at least the 1940s. The Nursery was renowned for its supply of plants and trees of high quality and reliability; the name plate maker was part of this process by providing imprinted metal labels that did not fade. The object therefore also demonstrates technological advances of the period. The object holds social significance to employees of Nobelius Nursery who used the machine for several decades to prepare stock for transport to clients. This name plate maker has a hollow hardwood rectangle body and stands on four decorative cast iron legs. It has a cast iron top and further cast iron detail on its front and sides. The top detail lists all numbers and letters to be used in the production of the labels (A-Z, 0-9, space, finish, start and - , ‘), and the front detail reads ‘THIS MACHINE IS SOLD FOR USE IN THE UNITED STATES ONLY. PATENTED NOV. 19 1901, NOV 19 1901, NOV 22 1904, JAN 31 1905 PAT. APPL’D FOR’. The side detail reads ‘PATENT APPLIED FOR’ The inside of the box contains the metal and wooden mechanisms for making embossed metal labels, which are produced inside and then come out the front once printed. Several metal labels remain sitting in the dispensing hollow. This machine is a Roovers ‘name plate’ maker or ‘nameplate’ machine, also known as an ‘embossing machine’ or as in the original patent application as a ‘die press’. It was manufactured from about 1895 by a firm called Roovers Bros Co., of New York, later known as Roovers Bros Inc. Carl Axel Nobelius imported this name plate machine from the USA, indicated by the plate of text at the front, between 1905 and 1915. It is likely that the machine was ordered directly from the manufacturer, as there is no record of the company having had distributors in Australia. The nameplate maker remained at the former nursery site throughout its changes in ownership, until it was donated to Emerald Museum in the 1970s. This machine was used to create metal labels for tree stock at Nobelius Nursery to identify produce, which were otherwise difficult to distinguish as seedlings. According to Syd Jinette, Emerald Resident and ex-nursery worker who used this machine in the 1930s and 1940s, it was used at the nursery since the early 1900s until at least the 1940s, but continued to reside at the site after this time (oral history account held at Emerald Museum). -

... The photograph is significant because it depicts work processes at the Gembrook Nurseries during the early decades of the Twentieth Century; a period in which the nurseries were the leading Southern-hemisphere supplier of plants and trees to public gardens around the world. The photograph may also depict Carl Axel Nobelius overseeing his workers, which gives insights into work practices and social dynamics of the time. 1910s 1900s 1890s 1880s 1886 1905 Carl Axel Nobelius Nobelius Nursery Gembrook Nurseries Emerald Country Club Emerald Lake Park fruit growing Trees Farming Obverse: BUDDING AT GEMBROOK NURSERIES. / Black and white rectangular photograph printed on photographic paper. ...Carl Axel Nobelius established the Gembrook Nurseries in 1886 on sixty-three acres purchased from an original selector after the area's gold rush started to diminish. It was called the Gembrook Nurseries as it was located in the Parish of Gembrook, but it was commonly referred to as the Nobelius nurseries after its founder; especially as control of the remaining portions of the nurseries remained with the Nobelius family until 1955. The Nobelius Nurseries had a substantial impact on the development of the township of Emerald, as local farmers were able to earn funds during the winter by working at the nursery which gave them financial resources while waiting for their own farms to become productive. The need to transport plants and trees to port quickly also contributed to the development of rail infrastructure in the region; C.A. Nobelius was one of thirteen witnesses to the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Railways in 1898 debating a rail connection between Gembrook and Ferntree Gully, which became today's Puffing Billy tourist service. The nurseries occupied 280 acres at their peak in 1905, with more than one million trees available for sale at that time. The nursery focused on exotic fruit and ornamental species which were supplied to public parks and gardens all over the world. In several cases the nurseries were the first suppliers of the trees in Australia. Sales records show that trees were supplied to clients in Europe, Asia, the United States, Africa and New Zealand, as well as to many Councils and Government organisations around Australia, such as Melbourne's Fitzroy Gardens and Royal Botanic Gardens. Portions of the Gembrook Nurseries were sold at different times throughout the Twentieth Century, with the Emerald Country Club and Emerald Lake Park both occupying portions of the original land. In 1981 the final twelve acres were purchased by the Shire of Sherbrooke in recognition to be used as a heritage landmark in recognition of the site's significance. The photograph is significant because it depicts work processes at the Gembrook Nurseries during the early decades of the Twentieth Century; a period in which the nurseries were the leading Southern-hemisphere supplier of plants and trees to public gardens around the world. Dr Bottomley was born in Fitzroy in 1881 and obtained a Bachelor of Surgery from the University of Melbourne in 1906. He lived in South Yarra with a weekend log cabin called Forest Lodge in Emerald and practiced in Collins Street in Melbourne. These Victorian-era 'action traction' obstetrical forceps were invented by Dr Robert Milne-Murray, a practicing physician at the Royal Maternity and the Simpson Memorial Pavilion in Edinburgh in 1891. They were designed to allow the attending physician to obtain a secure hold on the infant before pulling backwards on the handle to facilitate the baby's birth. In the 1920s Dr Bottomley and business partner W.H. Treganowan initiated the Emerald Country Club syndicate to purchase land from Carl Axel Nobelius' Gembrook Nurseries estate, which led to the formation of the golf course and Country Club facilities. Bottomley Drive in Emerald is named after Dr Bottomley; the street is located near Silver Birches, the house commissioned by the doctor from modernist architect Harry Norris. 'Action traction' obstetrical forceps were invented by Dr Robert Milne-Murray, a practicing physician at the Royal Maternity and the Simpson Memorial Pavilion in Edinburgh in 1891. Forceps to extract fetuses from women who would otherwise die during complications in labour have been used as a last resort since 1500 BCE, though it has only been in the last 300-500 years that forcep design has shifted to focusing on saving the lives of both mother and infant. These are fenestrated forceps, with a hollow 'blade' or loop, which have been superseded as a design by solid models that are less likely to cause compression damage to the baby's head. These items are significant as they provide insights into medical practice in the early twentieth-century in Melbourne and surrounds. They are also significant because they were used by Dr William Bottomley, who owned property in Emerald and whose business dealings significantly shaped the development of the town. The silver-coloured item is approximately thirty centimetres long and features two rounded metal loops opened and closed by manipulating the stem of the object, which ends in short feet that attach to a separate handle.1890s, 1900s, 1910s william bottomley, w.h. treganowan, medical practice, women's health, obstetrics, forceps, robert milne-murray, birth, forest lodge, silver birches, harry norris, emerald country club and golf course -
Emerald Museum & Nobelius Heritage ParkTool - Hole Punch - Nursery Tool, c. 1940s-60s
... This item was a tool used in nursery practices in the 1940s, potentially including on the Nobelius nursery. ...We have been unable to find a brand name or identify any identical items online or in other collections, indicating that this may be a custom-made tool designed specifically for use on a nursery - potentially C.A. Nobelius' nursery. It appears to be a foot-pedal operated hole punch, designed to reliably puncture metal pots for orchard trees. In the 1940s, the Nobelius nursery began to lift trees from the ground and sell them in pots rather than as bare-rooted plants; at this time, plastic was not yet widely available and many discarded biscuit or fruit tins were reused as pots. Potted trees required regular watering, and holes in the bottom of the pot for water to run out from; this hole punch may have facilitated an easier potting process until the popularisation of plastic pots in the 1960s.This item was a tool used in nursery practices in the 1940s, potentially including on the Nobelius nursery. Similar items are rare or difficult to find. This item rests on a cross base, with holes in each of the cross arms to allow it to be secured. The lower third of the central shaft is hollow, allowing for a foot pedal to descend through it. The middle third of the shaft is also hollow, with a loose central section affixed to the foot pedal moving up and down within it. In the upper third of the shaft, the hollow outer layer ends, and the mobile inner shaft is wrapped in a spring and affixed to the crossbar at the top of the item. Four small fixed crossbars also emerge from the sides of the middle third, attached to vertical rods through a rotating joint; the vertical rods attach with another rotating joint to pieces emerging through through the upper crossbar surface and ending with sharp points. The base and central shaft was painted yellow, and the upper crossbar head is painted red, though both are heavily faded. Together, these parts form a contraption that, when the foot pedal is pressed down, pulls the head downwards, in the process rotating the pointed pieces inwards to puncture the item placed on the head. When pressure is released, the spring returns the head to its initial position.N/Anursery, tools -

In the 1920s Dr Bottomley and business partner W.H.
