Currently on loan to the Puffing Billy Museum at Menzies Creek as an operating exhibit. Blackstone & Co. was a farm implement maker at Stamford, Lincolnshire, United Kingdom. In 1896 they built lamp start oil engines. The Lamp or hot-bulb engine (also hotbulb or heavy-oil engine) is a type of internal combustion engine. It is an engine in which fuel is ignited by being brought into contact with a red-hot metal surface inside a bulb, followed by the introduction of air (oxygen) compressed into the hot-bulb chamber by the rising piston. There is some ignition when the fuel is introduced, but it quickly uses up the available oxygen in the bulb. Vigorous ignition takes place only when sufficient oxygen is supplied to the hot-bulb chamber on the compression stroke of the engine. Zilles Printers was begun by Lewis Zilles in the early 1930s. It was in McKenzie Street Ballarat. His son Jeffrey also became a printer - letterpress, offset and screen printer. The business became Zilles Printers/Graphics and was in Armstrong Street and later Bell Street Ballarat. The Bulldog Engineering Company emerged around 1886. J Abraham began the operation building windmills and pumps. An employee, J F Osbourne, purchased the business when Abraham died in 1914. Windmills were still produced but Osbourne began to manufacture the "Bulldog" oil engine towards the end of the first world war. The Bulldog engine production was around 400. Of these there were 40 with wavy spokes. Some writer have been using Ballarat Bulldog as the brand name. This is incorrect, it was just Bulldog, made in Ballarat. Handwritten extracts, with typed copies, from the Bendigo Advertiser Monday July 24th, 1933. First erected for 20 years. Mr. Cook performs Opening. Approx. 400 people attended the opening on Sat 22nd. Expected that when run in, the ore will be crushed for 2/6 per ton. Consists of 10 heads, 1000 lbs each. Boxes are of Homestake pattern with wooden horses of special timber and iron guides. Copper plate tables of ample area provided. Floors are of concrete and so graded that all washings - -. Expected later to expand to 30 head. A 114 H P Ruston-Hornsby crude oil engine is provided with a friction clutch to facilitate easy starting and will be capable of driving the battery when it is extended. The slush lamp is thought to have been used for examining and oiling train engines.The slush lamp has local significance as it was donated by a resident of Wodonga. It also has historic significance as an example of an object made by upcycling in the c. late 19th century and early 20th century.The slush lamp consistis of a rectangular grey metal body with soldered edges with a flat handle at one end, a fibrous textile wick protruding from a long spout at the other end, and a cork inserted in the opening on the top surface to secure the fuel used. This early 20th-century chest of drawers is unique. It was made from recycled timber kerosene boxes and metal tins. The case was made in South Australia between 1905 and 1927 by the British Imperial Oil Company Ltd, which was the first business to import bulk petroleum products into Australia. Before this, ships carried crates of kerosene as cargo. Items salvaged from the 1880 wreck of the vessel Eric the Red included kerosene boxes. Kerosene replaced plant and animal-based fuel, such as whale oil, for lighting in homes and for the lamps in lighthouses and on marine vessels. It was also used for cooking and heating and as engine fuel. The last kerosene-fueled lighthouse lamp was transferred to solar power in 1985. The chest of drawers is one-of-a-kind. The original uses for the components of the chest of drawers, the wooden box and metal tins were for containing and transporting kerosene. Kerosene was used from the late 19th century for fuel in lamps, heating, and cooling. Previously whale oil was used for the lamps in lighthouses. The company providing the kerosene was the first to import it into Australia in bulk quantities. The set of drawers is one of the many ways that inventive Australians were able to repurpose materials.Chest of drawers; wooden frame and rails, metal drawers with vertical metal handles. The frame has been constructed from the wooden panels of a vintage oil and kerosene box. The three drawers have been created from empty kerosene cans that were cut in half from top to bottom, some with the round opening closed over. Inscriptions from the original box and cams are stencilled on the top and base of the frame and impressed or painted on the metal cans. The frame has provision for a further drawer. The Steampacket Place Development Board, a joint team formed by the Victorian State Government and the City of Greater Geelong undertook the $30 million revitalisation of the entire Geelong Waterfront from 1995 to 2000. As part of the revitalisation, in August 1996, the Steampacket Place Development Board purchased an unrestored Armitage-Herschell portable steam-driven carousel to restore and locate as a major feature on the revitalised waterfront. The Carousel was manufactured around 1892 by the Armitage-Herschell company of New York. The Carousel operated on the Mordialloc Pier from the 1920s to the 1950s. Twenty-four of the 36 horses are original, and believed to be rare examples hand-carved by the American master, Charles Dare. This little slate notebook was given by Webb Brothers to their customers as an advertising tool. The Webb Brothers Company a large manufacturing firm in Lava Street, Warrnambool, making windmills, dairying utensils, steam boilers, and oil engines. They were also engineers, brassfounders and wholesale tinsmiths and plumbers. Motor car work became a speciality in the 1920s. In 1921 they opened a branch of their business in Melbourne (Bayswater) and the name of the firm became Presha Engineering Company. This notebook is of some interest as it was provided by Webb Brothers, an important company in Warrnambool in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. It is also an example of the advertising techniques used by business houses at that time and an interesting example of the use of a slate pencil and slate pages as a recording mechanism.This is a brown leather notebook with three pages of slate material making eight spaces for recording notes. Notes recorded in slate can be rubbed out and the space used again. The slate pencil container is on the side of the notebook but the pencil is missing. The cover is mottled with creamy-yellow lines. The pages are edged in red and there is scribble on some pages.
