Neville Mirvane BUNNING (1902-1990) During World War Two Neville Bunning served with the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF). He was an Art Teacher at the Ballarat Technical Art School (a division of the Ballarat School of Mines) from 05 February 1946 to 22 September 1964. Neville Bunning formed the Ballarat Artist's Society (later the Ballarat Society of Artists), a group that sponsored art and which invited modernist artists to speak to students and to the public of Ballarat. He also wrote a weekly column in the Ballarat Courier. Bunning produced a bust of Australian Prime Minister, The Right Honourable J.A. Lyons from Tasmania, who died in office. Neville Bunning died in Subiaco, Western Australia on 29 April 1990. This item is part of the Federation University Art Collection. Painted from Beaumaris Cliffs looking over to Mentone this work is a characteristic example of Beckett's ability to create a sense of place with an economy of means. It is likely this item was received from the estate of John 'Jack' Courier. Courier left a bequest to the College consisting of a significant number of artworks by himself and others.Abstract oil painting on board, consisting of multicoloured geometric shapes. There are red and yellow shapes at centre, surrounded by blue and green shapes, suggesting an image of a cliff at the seaside. Back of board contains handwritten text which reads 'Title RED CLIFF/Price $200/Artist JOHN COURIER/368 TOORAK RD/STH YARRA/W49/IPEC'. The letters 'JAA' enclosed in a circle are also written on the back of the work. Small D-ring fittings are attached to the back of the work for hanging.

Also reference to The Wattle Club pp. 356-7. Thus giving the connection of the Greenwood and Carr families, the subjects of Charles Wheeler's painting.Painting in glass-fronted frame.Typewritten notation behind the frame - "Greenwood oral family history says that this unsigned painting was done by Charles Wheeler as a demonstration for Rose Greenwood, (A.V. Greenwood's sister). They shared a studio at the Wattle Club Hall at Box Hill circa 1890s. The subject matter was said to be Grandfather Carr's orchard in Wantirna Road (Ringwood - Still standing in 2003). Source: Mary Greenwood, youngest Granddaughter of A.V. Greenwood."

Painting consists of a range of geometric shapes in blues, browns, yellows and greys, with a larger white shape occupying the majority of the centre third of the painting. There is a small sticker from Gibson's Auctioneers attached to the back of the artwork. Two D-ring fittings, attached to small blocks, are attached to the back of the board for hanging.

Alan Marshall (1902-1984) was an Australian writer, story teller, social documenter and author of 'I Can Jump Puddles'. For many years, Marshall lived in Sandringham. A bronze bust dedicated to him stands outside the Sandringham Library in Waltham Street.
