Stamps from the Old Bendigo Law CourtsA dome shaped decorative metal base 11 centimeters diameter and four centimeters high supports a rotating disc which has ten semi-circular slots to hold wooden handled stamps. There are eight wooden handles with a spherical top tapering to a smaller cylinder with a metal stamp on the bottom. One handle doesn't have a stamp. Seven men were killed at the Great Extended Hustler's mine disaster on 2nd May 1914 by an explosion of dynamite occurring as the men were waiting at the plat to ascend the mine at the end of their shift. No blame was attached to anyone in the findings of the inquisition. It was unknown what caused the dynamite to explode. This document formed part of the research done at the time by Bendigo Historical Society, of the 100 years commemoration of the mine disaster, held at Hustler's Hill in 2014. The Sandhurst Burial ground was opened in 1852 and was used for three years. It was situated on the flat below the Commissioner's Camp at Camp Hill and is now part of the Tom Flood sports centre. There are records of 219 burials in the early burial ground. The first burial was in 1852, William Binks, a 23 month old son of James Binks and Ann Hodson from Paddy's Gully and the last in 1854. By this time, the Back Creek Cemetery, known now as the Bendigo Cemetery, was in operation. When the burial ground was no longer used it fell into disrepair, with people dumping rubbish on the site. Eventually, some of the bodies were exhumed and re-interred in other cemeteries; the site was covered with some 10 metres of soil. Some of the 'fill' came from the building of the Law Courts in Pall Mall, Bendigo. Arthur William Pulfer was born on 18 April 1918, in Bendigo, Victoria, Australia, his father, Harold Victor Pulfer, was 30 and his mother, Elsie Maud Rumball, was 26. He married Norma Stewart in Bendigo, Victoria, Australia. He died on 6 March 2001, in his hometown, at the age of 82, and was buried in the Bendigo Cemetery. 1965 fire at the Bendigo Railway Station A dull explosion in the refreshment room about 1:30 p.m. touched off the blaze, which quickly spread and burnt out the station in less than an hour. Just before the explosion a train carrying more than 200 Melbourne-bound holiday makers pulled out of the station. Scores of railways employees in other parts of the station did not realise the refreshment room was on fire until a signal box attendant gave the alarm. Early estimates place damage at more than £100,000. Quick work by station staff saved many thousands of pounds worth of equipment before flames engulfed the building from end to end. At the height of the blaze, a Bendigo fire brigade Station Officer, Vin Lapsley, fell 18 feet – and miraculously landed on his feet – after being overcome by smoke while directing a hose from a ladder on to the roof. In this photograph, taken in 1929, the Gray family are pictured outside the courts where their father was a caretaker. The family are Edna, Yvonne, Alyce and Edie. The father was Claude and the mother was Edna. Also a letter to the editor from Norm Gray, Eaglehawk: the group of six people standing to the extreme right are all brothers and sisters of the Gray family. The person standing slightly apart and to the left of the group was my uncle Claude. The other 5 siblings in the group are Edna, Douglas (my father), Edith, Yvonne and Alyce. Designed by Carl Wilhelm Vahland in 1880 the fountain still stands on the corner of Bull Street and Pall Mall. William Vahland (2 October 1828 – 21 July 1915) arrived in Australia in 1854 from Hannover, Germany and married Jane Barrow in 1859. Having trained as an architect in his homeland, Vahland followed the gold to Bendigo but after little success opened an architectural practice which established him as Central Victorian's premier architect. Over his long career Vahland designed over 200 public buildings, monuments and private residences which can still be seen throughout the district including the Alexandra Fountain, the Cascades in Rosalind Park and Capital Theatre and Rifle Orderly Rooms now the Bendigo Art Gallery, collaborating with fellow architect Getzschmann on many of these projects. William Vahland Place in Bendigo is named after him. He was secretary of the Golden and Corinthian Lodge of Freemasons, and in 1904 he published a History of Freemasonry in Bendigo. Despite his contributions, World War I brought unwarranted hardship. Though a British citizen for nearly 60 years, his German heritage led to suspicion and he was forced to report to the police weekly, surrender his passport, and faced the indignity of asset restrictions. He passed away on July 21, 1915—his 56th wedding anniversary.Three lion head water features originally from Vahland fountain currently located in Bull Street near the Old Law Courts and conservatory.
