The Tottenham site functioned as a major cable manufacturing and distribution facility, operating through the 1950s–1990s as part of the Olympic, Olex, National Cables and Nexans lineage. In 1981, Pacific Dunlop purchased Olex Cables. They also acquired Burton Cables and Spinaway Cables, merging all three operations. In 1994, Burton and Spinaway were merged into National Cables by the Pacific Dunlop. In 1999, a management buyout created an independent Cables Group and in 2006, Nexans (France) acquired Olex, forming Nexans Olex. The Tottenham site’s industrial footprint gradually wound down as operations consolidated into newer facilities at other sites. The Tottenham site was progressively decommissioned; buildings were demolished or repurposed. The site today is a large shipping container and transport hub. This aerial photograph not only shows the expansive Olympic Cables Factory site, but in the foreground, the White City Railway Station, in the centre, the City of Footscray Quarry, and at top, the Somerville Road Wool Stores and Smorgans.olympic cables, sunshine road, tottenham, city of footscray quarry, white city railway station -

... "OLYMPIC CABLES PTY. LTD / AUSTRALIA" "6 TUBE COAXIAL CABLE / WITH 32 PAIRS 20LBS/MILE UNARMOURED / SYDNEY MELBOURNE 1960"...Olympic Cables Pty Ltd...Souvenir Souvenir cable Olympic Cables Pty Ltd ...Construction on the Sydney Melbourne coaxial cable began in 1960 and was one of Australia's biggest and most important telecommunications projects of the 20th century. The laying of a coaxial cable between Sydney, Canberra and Melbourne, allowed people to direct dial long distance phone calls (rather than operator assisted), and supported simultaneous television broadcasts for the first time. It was officially opened on 9 April 1962 by the then Prime Minister, Sir Robert Menzies. This souvenir coaxial cable was presented to Mr Roy Kerr on his retirement. Mr Kerr was the Assistant Chief Engineer, Headquarters Customer Networks Branch, Telecom Australia. This cable has strong historic significance as part of the historic and technologically important Sydney-Melbourne coaxial cable. The cable represents not only a feat of technology but a shift in social engagement with telecommunication technologies, as it allowed people to direct dial long distance phone calls (rather than operator assisted), and supported simultaneous television broadcasts for the first time; it put the power of connection directly into the hands of the Australian public. This souvenir length of cable is well provenanced, and the details of the cables use and significance is inscribed on the steel casing. A 6 tube copper coaxial cable with lead sheath, quad 20lbs conductor cable (paper insulated), and a presentation metal collar and base. Inscriptions around the top of the metal collar and the base. Falls Creek Historical SocietyBook - The World Atlas of Skiing, Stephen Pooley, 1990
... Each resort is illustrated with specially commissioned artworks which show the runs - from the nursery slopes to the most demanding which only the most experienced skiers attempt - ski lifts, cable cars as well as other distinctive features, such as the langlauf routes. The history and events of international championships - Winter Olympics or World Cup - that have given particular character to the resort are described, as well as the skiing greats who have mastered them. ...Skiing is the most exhilarating and popular winter sport in the world. The number of skiers has expanded every year since the advent of cheaper travel in the 1960s and an increased affluence brought a new group of ski enthusiasts to the slopes. The professional sport has also expanded and attracts a very large television audience. The World Atlas of Skiing looks at over 50 of the most prestigious and beautiful ski resorts in the world. From the older and more established destinations, like St Moritz, Gstaad, Kitzbühel, and St Anton in the Alps, and the chic American resorts of Aspen, Vail and Jackson Hole, to the huge, new custom-built skiing areas such as the Trois Vallees and Val d'Isere in Europe and Taos and Ski the Summit in the U.S. The continuing expansion of the sport has meant that one can ski in most parts of the world from Scotland and Russia to Australia, New Zealand and India. Items related to the Falls Creek Area in this issue include:- Cover - Australian Olympic Skiers Return Left to Right: Bill Day, Bob Arnott, Gordon Day. ...Schuss was advertised as Victoria’s Official Ski Journal It was issued monthly from 1935 to 1961 except during the war when summer issues covered two months. This continued after the war, but it averaged 10 issues annually over its 25 year life. Schuss was published by the Ski Club of Victoria which had a membership of 38 Ski Clubs and demanded to be recognised as the prime authority on skiing in the state. The other 30 ski clubs with 85% of the members disagreed and the politics of skiing became heated. These clubs formed the Federation of Victorian Ski Clubs with their own journal, Ski Horizon. With the establishment of the Victorian Ski Association, Ski-Horizon published its last issue in Nov - Dec. 1955 and the role of the official journal was fully taken over by “Schuss”. This item is significant because it contains stories, images and information documenting the development of the ski industry in Victoria. The journal features stories and events chronicling developments in Victoria and internationally. Items related to the Falls Creek Area in this issue include:- Cover - Australian Olympic Skiers Return Left to Right: Bill Day, Bob Arnott, Gordon Day. Page 111 - FRONT-SPRING CABLE BINDINGS - A note from Bob Hymans advises that he has for sale a number of Front- Spring Cable Bindings made by Ramy, the well-known French maker. In This pattern the spring is attached to the ski in front of the toe-irons and eliminates the weight of the spring around the heel fitted to most cables. It is very popular with ski-racers in Europe for its comfort and control. Bob also advises that his Ski School at Fails Creek will be open during the weekends of June, and from June 30 onwards till the end of the season. schuss journal, bob hymans, front-spring cable bindings -
