Formal photograph taken on the occasion of the official opening. Wilson's private Cool Stores at Hurstbridge comprised six cooling chambers with a refrigeration plant to be used by local growers to store their produce. This photo was found in the Savage family home, formerly the home of Rev. Chase believed to be formerly of Panton Hill or Hurstbridge. (House may have been shifted from Panton Hill - now demolished.) Rev. Chase probably in picture, although not reported as attending in any of the newspaper reports of the day.This photo represents the significance of the orcharding industry in the Hurstbridge and surrounding area at the beginning of the twenteith century. Ron Bridger was an avid collector of items related to transport, predominately Trams. These items include newspaper cuttings, pamphlets, reports, timetables, fare prices plus special items relating to events. Items from Melbourne and regional Victoria, interstate - Adelaide and Sydney, plus overseas, make up this collection. The article shows the tram that ran when they officially returned to the rails in Ballarat. SEC Chairman Mr J.C. Trethowan returned to Ballarat to officially open the Ballarat Tourist Tramway. These photographs were taken at the official opening of the Orbost - Bairnsdale Railway Line. In 3150.3 which is of a group of children and two adults those identified in the photograph are ; L - R front row Mary Gilbert; Warren; Betty Gilbert; Marion Gilbert; Mrs Shaw and son; ? The line opened in 1916, the Orbost railway station being built on the Newmerella side of the river.This item is associated with the history of the Orbost-Bairnsdale railway line and therefore reflects the role that the rail line played in the social and economic history of Orbost. It is a pictorial record of a significant event in Orbost's history. On April 10 1916, the first scheduled train service left Orbost for Bairnsdale. The Bairnsdale-Orbost railway was opened to serve the agricultural and timber ndustry. Because of the decline in traffic and heavy operating costs, the line was finally closed in August, 1987.
