'After training as a Cartographic Draftsman within the mining industry, I worked as a property illustrator for real estate firms in the eastern suburbs of Melbourne for 23 years from 1983. I initially photographed houses with a Polaroid camera and made a 'thumbnail' sketch while there. The photos were used to scale off a sketch in pencil and then that sketch was overlaid with drafting film and the 'pen and ink' completed. The pens I used were the Rotring ‘Rapidigraph’ drafting pens. The ink was also made by Rotring (German).The film was ‘Rapidraw’, polyester drafting film, double matte. It takes a very fine line and doesn’t bleed. As well as house sketches, there were often floor plans and site plans ordered. Aerial sketches were ordered when the property needed an overall view.' This album was likely compiled by Freda Oxley, a friend of the Sellers who stayed with them at the Mission for a few years. The couple arrived in January 1925, replacing Mr and Mrs Gurney Goldsmith and stayed until January 1929. The photographs bear the stamp "Herschell's Prints - Pathe Agents". Charles Richard Herschell founded a film Production studio of the same name operating at 31 Agnes Street, Jolimont from 1925. A similar album by Freda Oxley with similar handwriting in white ink was donated to The National Library of Australia by her niece. Reverend Weller succeeded the senior chaplain role after Rev Gurney Goldsmith in the mid 1920s until the end of the decade. He was a keen photographer himself. Freda Kathleen Oxley (1882-1969) pictured here holding a camera took pictures during a voyage to Melbourne on S.S. Persic via Cape Town in 1925. An album of 126 photographs is now held at the National Library of Australia in Canberra., containing views of the Mission to Seamen, Melbourne, with visiting sailors and clergy; family groups, gardens, ships, church picnics, a wedding, some views of Portsea. She seems to have been a childhood friend of Mrs Weller as she was like her born in Windsor, UK. She lived in the chaplaincy for 3 years and became a volunteer; she can be seen in a few photographs of picnics. John Oxley was a shoe and butchers’ knife manufacturer, who was listed in Whitecroft UK in 1822 . By 1825, he was based in Hollis Croft. John apparently died in about 1837. He had two sons – George (1808-1879) and James (1811-1881) who took over the business. George moved to Indianna, USA and in 1868 James continued to manufacture 'Cooks’ and palette knives and steels" Oxley’s trade mark was a butcher’s knife crossed with a sharpening steel (and the letters ‘JO’). The firm stayed in the family until 1960. Early settlers were self reliant and repaired their own equipment for kitchen,dairy, farm, horses, carts using various tools . The clock made of marble, known as the Handcock Clock at the Wangaratta Museum, was presented to Harriet and Charles Handcock of Myrrhee near Wangaratta on Anzac Day in 1917, by the Oxley Shire, for the commitment of eight of their nine sons to the First World War. Two of their sons were killed during the war and three others came home with injuries. One young son and two girls were left home. The Handcock Clock was donated to the Wangaratta Historical Society in 1967 and is on display in the Museum. There is a plaque on the front of the clock with the date, presenters, and reason for presentation.
