Commercially-operated boat tours on the Maribyrnong and Yarra Rivers in Melbourne were a major tourist attraction, especially in the first half of the twentieth century. A number of companies ran ferries and motor-launches to locations such as the Riverview Tea Gardens (1909-1947) at Ascot Vale, and the Hawthorn Tea Gardens on the corner of Power Street and Riversdale Road. One of the families which ran these services was Hicks Bros, which from circa 1921 operated a ferry service from Princess Walk (Melbourne) to Studley Park. This is one of a series of 17 black and white undated photographic proofs donated to the Kew Historical Society in 2013 by the Queenscliffe Historical Museum. The series includes images of individuals, tea rooms, ferries, motor launches, ocean liners and tugs. In 1953, the owner of Hicks Bros was involved in an inquest into the drowning of a Ukrainian tourist on a ferry operated by Melbourne Ferries, a rival firm. In published reports of the inquest, reference is made to a number of photographs taken by Robert Irvine Atchison, part-owner of Hicks Bros. As the reverse of the photographs indicates copyright is held by the State of Victoria, the collection may have derived from that year.Historically significant and rare image of one of the major tour boat services which operated on the Yarra River.Faded black and white photographic proof of a ferry, possibly one of a number owned by Hicks Bros on the River Yarra. The steam train is pulling into the former Rupertswood Station. Guests who were invited to the Clarke family's mansion, 'Rupertswood Mansion' used Rupertswood Station after the servants had departed the train at Sunbury Station. This ensured that the servants arrived at the mansion and were able to arrange the luggage in the allotted rooms before the guests arrived. In later years students from Salesian College who needed to travel up the line from Sunbury used the siding, which was finally closed as buses transported the students.When William Clarke built Rupertswood Mansion in 1874, he also included his own railway station and a lodge at the main gates of the estate. This model of the sailing ship Loch Ard, made by David Lumsden, was commissioned by Flagstaff Hill Maritime Village for the Loch Ard Centenary Commemoration in 1978. The Loch Ard was bound for Melbourne in 1878 loaded with passengers and cargo when it ran into a rocky reef at the base of Mutton Bird Island, near Port Campbell. Of the 54 crew members and passengers on board, only two survived: an apprentice, Tom Pearce and a young woman passenger, Eva Carmichael, who lost all of her family in the tragedy.This model ship is significant as an accurate depiction of the Heritage Listed Loch Ard ship.Ship model, of the heritage listed sailing ship Loch Ard, wrecked in 1878. The photographs taken from the Franklin St signal box in Swanston St shows the view of the signal men and traffic issues. In the first photograph, tram 498 (University, route 4D) has turned in front of tram 422? waiting for a passenger to board before travelling south in Swanston St. A motor car is threading between the two trams. In the view is a sign for Havelock Tobacco and an Ansett Pioneer bus waiting outside the Ansett Airways/Pioneer building. The second photo shows the number of trams in Swanston St and the general traffic using the intersection and the workload or the number of trams to be managed by the signalman.
