Captain Kenneth Aubrey Mickle D.S.O., originally of St Kilda, served in the British Army with the Royal Garrison Artillery during World War I and was awarded the Distinguished Service Order (D.S.O.) for his leadership and gallantry. He died on 30 July 1919 at the age of 33 after a long illness and is buried at Brighton Cemetery. An article in The Argus newspaper of 6 August 1917 contained the following report: "A cable message received on Friday last announced that the D.S.O. had been awarded to Captain Kenneth Aubrey Mickle, of the Royal Garrison Artillery. Captain Mickle is the elder son of Mr D. Mickle, of Marine parade St. Kilda, and was born in that suburb. He was educated at Queen's College, and after qualifying as a metallurgist, studied at the Melbourne University for three years. There he won the Grimwade Prize and other distinctions. On the outbreak of war Captain Mickle held a responsible position on the Burmah mines. He enlisted in England, and received a commission. He saw much fighting on the Somme, and in the batter of Arras, where he commanded a heavy trench mortar brigade attached to a Highland division. In a letter referring to the last-mentioned battle he wrote:- "My little commando has of late been quite in the limelight. Two of my officers received M.C.'s, one was mentioned in despatches, and five of the N.C.O.'s and men received military medals." Captain Mickle was mentioned in despatches during the Somme battle and again in June last."Coloured certificate on cardboard frame with images of military insignia, the Commonwealth Coat of Arms, National flag, Australian Military Forces badge, and weaponryPresented to Capt. For welcome and presentations to St Kilda's (1914) ANZACs on 4 December 1918. The event is described by John Butler Cooper in 'The History of St Kilda' (pp 263-264) as follows: 'On Wednesday evening, December 4, 1918, seventy Anzacs of St. Kilda who had returned were welcomed by the St. Kilda Patriotic Committee at the City Hall. The hall was decorated with an immense bouquet of red, white and blue flowers, depending from the centre of the ceiling, with floral and electric festoons leading therefrom. Anzacs shields in laurel wreaths and flags were displayed along the balcony of the hall. Over the stage the word "Anzacs," outlined by electric lights, was surmounted with the words "Patriotic Committee of St. Kilda heartily Welcomes You." As the returned soldiers marched into the hall, they were received with cheers, and an electric button being touched, the word "Welcome" flashed in light caught their eyes. The Mayor presented the 1914 soldiers with gold enamelled medals, bearing the arms of St. Kilda.' This commemorative medal was distributed to Victorian school children to celebrate the coronation of King George VI in 1937. It was often issued with a patriotic red, white and blue ribbon. King George VI became king unexpectedly because his older brother, Edward VIII, abdicated the throne in December 1936. As the Duke and Duchess of York , King George VI and Queen Elizabeth had visited Australia and New Zealand in 1927 primarily to open the provisional Parliament House in Canberra. Their tour also served as a show of gratitude for the sacrifices made by the Dominions during World War I and to strengthen ties between Australia and the British Empire. Part of their journey from Canberra to Melbourne was onboard the Royal Train which travelled through Wodonga and was reported in the Argus. Argus, Wednesday 11 May 1927, page 19 "The Royal train will leave Albury, according to the railway time table arrangements at 9.54 a.m. and Wodonga at 9.20. Principal towns on the route to Melbourne will be passed as follows:- Wangaratta 10.10; Benalla 11.16; Seymour 12.45; and Spencer street 2.50. From Albury the Sydney express which leaves at 20 minutes past 8 o'clock will be used as the pilot train for the Royal train."This medal is significant because it represents the Coronation of King George VI which was of importance to the majority of Wodonga residents. His Majesty had paseed through Wodonga by train in 1927.A gilt brass, double-sided, circular medal struck to celebrate the Coronation of King George VI & Queen Elizabeth on 12th May 1937. The centre of the reverse displays the official Coat of Arms of the State of Victoria with the word 'VICTORIA' above and the motto 'PEACE AND PROSPERITY' below. There is an attached metal loop and split ring at the top edge. A ribbon would have been inserted through the ring to enable it to be hung or worn. On the obverse side: 'KING GEORGE VI & QUEEN ELIZABETH' around the upper circumference of the medal. The maker's details appear at the bottom.
