In 1901 he would undergo a court case against the ‘Evening Observer’ for defamation and libel in their newspaper on his exploits in the Second Boer War, describing him as a ‘coward’ and contradicting his and others recollections of his actions in South Africa. Ricardo would die in 1907 after fracturing his skull as a result of being thrown off his horse while hunting. He would be buried in the Boroondara General Cemetery.
