This item appears to be a calendar which was in use for a multiple clientele office e.g. post office, commercial office or bank, school or educational administration area, small government office or hospital administration in the Kiewa Valley or its region. The time this item was first used, electrical or battery powered desk and office calendars did not exist for semi isolated rural regions. These type of perpetual calendars not only looked impressive but were not affected by power shortages. This was a time when not all of Victoria was adequately supplied by power. This item is quite relevant to the Kiewa Valley as it demonstrates that the time before the Hydro electricity generators where built (Mount Beauty to Falls Creek), power supplies were not keeping up to the ever increasing demand from city and rural customers. This item was in a period before mass produced automated date and time pieces were available and hand operated date and time pieces were both in a social and commercial sphere a necessity.Wooden box (varnished) with three openings (on the front) detailing ,the day(Monday to Sunday), the date (1st to 31st) and the month (January to December). On the right side of the calendar box are two winding screws (RHS 6 steel) for each opening. These permit the scrolling of the information i.e. day, number and month. This ability results in a desk calendar which is perpetual. Symmetrical vase shape with a stand of black cardboard attached on the back. it has a small brass eyelet at the top to hang the item On the left hand side is a thermometer attached by small rivetts (10cm by 3cm) To it's right is a gold coloured tin frame (7cm by 5.5cm) In the frame sits light blue cardboard cards with white and black lettering telling the month, day and date which can be replaced each day. All complete.Sits in a light brown cardboard box (20.5 by 19 cm ) with stappled corners and a label giving directions. Donated June 1977 by Dalgety Travel Pty Ltd for a pre-Christmas Mid-week Pursuit Twilight Series, open to all keel boat classes on the register of any club, during the months of October, November and December, consisting of at least seven heats according to the calendar. It was first won by Gumdrop skippered by W. Bramsden. In 1961, George Venables resigned after 38 years of faithful service to the Club. He spent the first 21 years as Head Steward, the remainder as Secretary, a position that in his latter years became Secretary/Manager. Prior to leaving, he presented to the Club the Quadrant once owned and used by his father when one of the Navigating Officers aboard H.M.V.S. Cerberus. This was to lay idle in as cupboard in the Office until one day seen by then Commodore Les Nangle, who decided to put it to good use. Following being mounted in a case, July 1969, it was allocated as a trophy by Commodore Les Nangle. Originally it was for a Distance event for 1st Division and One-Design Classes, with the first event season 1969-70, being from St Kilda to Mornington, won by Brian Morris skippering the Diamond Class yacht, Vulpine. In an endeavour to raise interest in Twilight events for both the racing and Club revenue, the trophy was re-allocated, December 1990, for a Combined Club and Classes, including Trailerable yachts, Mid-Week Summer Twilight Pursuit Series, held on consecutive Wednesday’s, commencing January 1991, of seven, later amended to nine heats without spinnakers, initially with trophies awarded after each heat. The best five results to count, contested in accordance with the VYC handicapping system. Trophy was first won Season 1971-1972, by Roy Duncan with his Tumlare, Marie, From 2007 onwards the contests were amended to allow for at least seven heats to be set in the race calendar with a minimum of 5 heats to be conducted to constitute a series. Seventy percent of results to count for the series scores when the number of heats exceeded ‘Five’.Brass quadrant upon coastal chart, enclosed in a glass fronted wooden case.
