Brown's Self-Interpreting Family Bible. London: Blackie and Son 1862. A thick dark brown volume with a tiny embossed diamond shaped self-pattern on both covers. All edges of pages are gilt, The title, Holy Bible is printed in gold lettering at the top of the spine and it has five raised bands across it. The black and white decorative title page has Brown's Self-Interpreting Family Bible with many Additional notes, References and Readings, also Index of subjects printed at the top. Underneath in a semi-circle shape is a black ad white illustration of Ruth and Naomi, with publisher details below. The following Title Page has full details and explanations of the contents. There is a Publisher's Preface and Attestations to this Edition. Following this is a Memoir of The Rev. John Brown, closing with his final words upon his death on 19th June 1787. He was buried at Haddington Churchyard 24th June A.D. 1787, aged 65 years. Following this is an Introduction to the Right Understanding of the Oracles of God. There are many black and white plates included throughout the Bible. Pp. 1157 (Bible) At the back are many additional inclusions such as: Alphabetical Index, A Collection of Similies contained in the Scriptures, Complete Index, and Concise Dictionary, The Psalms of David in Metre, Translations and Paraphrases and more. There are missing pages of the Hymns. In all a most complex Bible for the family. First published in 1611, the King James Version of the Bible has exercised an incalculable impact on piety, language and literature throughout the English-speaking world. "Other translations may engage the mind, but the King James Version is the Bible of the heart" (Campbell, 275). It is probably the text most commonly found in decorative family Bibles such as this one, which has several black and white plates. The Rev. John Brown of Haddington was "a tirelessly faithful pastor"—"For eight months of the year he delivered a lecture, two sermons, and an exercise each Sunday"—and also a prolific author. He is best remembered for his Self-Interpreting Bible, first published 1778, which became "as familiar in Presbyterian households as John Bunyan's Pilgrim's Progress and Thomas Boston's Human Nature in its Fourfold State" (DNB). This portrait was taken during the visit of Stevenson & McNicoll to Bacchus Marsh September-November 1883. It is probable that they used the silver albumen process. The subject of the portrait is Peter Murray, bootmaker, who set up his business in Bacchus Marsh at 181 Main Street in 1872. In 1889 he added an extension to his dwelling. In later years, Mrs Murray advertised Board and Lodging at "Murri House", in premises adjoining the shop and dwelling. Mr. Murray was active in the local community, and was a Councillor on his death. He was also the local Electoral Registrar. His death may have been hastened as a result of a serious accident in 1893 when he fell heavily and broke his right leg above the ankle, which necessitated the removal of a protruding portion of bone. He was taken by train to the Melbourne Hospital, accompanied by Dr Vance and a number of his neighbours. He made a recovery and in 1904 hosted a meeting of the local Quoit Club. On 14th June 1908 Peter Murray died at his home in Main Street Bacchus Marsh. He had been suffering from Brights disease for about 6 months. He was aged 65 at the time of his death. His first wife had predeceased him. His second wife, Margaret survived him. Later in 1908, Mr. W. Bullock advertised that he had taken over the business of the late Mr. P. Murray.The Melbourne photographers Stevenson & McNicoll visited the Bacchus Marsh district in 1883. They took photographs of many local families and individuals in front of their houses or businesses. More than 50 of these images were preserved by the Hawkins family of Bacchus Marsh and passed to a granddaughter of that family Mrs Beryl Jeremeas who donated those images to the Bacchus Marsh and District Historical Society in 1973. Stevenson & McNicoll are known to have taken numerous studio portrait photographs of Bacchus Marsh people. This was probably the larger part of their work. However very few of these images have been acquired by local historical societies. This image of Peter Murray is the only known example of one of the 1883 studio portraits of Bacchus Marsh residents produced by Stevenson & McNicoll. It is therefore particularly significant as a rare example of their portrait photography in the Bacchus Marsh area and beyond.A sepia coloured photograph on cardboard. Carte de Visite size. Rare postcard showing view looking down Bridge Street with the Eltham Obelisk in situ in its original location. The Obelisk War Memorial was unveiled 3 August 1919. Subsequent to the unveiling provision was made of a stone retaining wall topped with a chain link and granite stone boundary. Along with the use of the name Obelisk Corner, the Bridge Street bridge was also known as Obelisk Bridge. The Obelisk was relocated to the fornt garden of the Eltham RSL sub-branch in the mid 1950s as a result of road widening and corner improvements. The Bridge Street Bridge was replaced with a new concrete bridge in 1956-1957. This is a view looking west down Bridge Street across Main Road. The date was around 1925 and Bridge Street was known as the Greeenborough Road and Main Road was Maria Street. There are substantial cuttings on all four corners. The most obvious feature is the Eltham Obelisk which was unveiled 3 August 1919 by Sir William Irvine, Lieutenant-Governor of Victoria on 3 August 1919, honouring those Eltham residents who fell in the First World War. His wife, Agnes, was instrumental in the establishment of the Avenue of Honour. The Irvines were also Eltham residents, their property was Killeavey on the Yarra River near Laughing Waters. In 1947 the Eltham War Memorial Trust intended for the Obelisk to be relocated from Bridge Street and Main Road to the Garden of Remembrance which was planned as part of the Baby Health Centre which was to be the first of three buildings of the Eltham War Memorial to be built in 1951. For various reasons that did not happen. In July 1956, the original wooden Bridge Street Bridge was replaced with a new concreete bridge, which is the structure we know today. At the same time, Eltham Council upgraded and widenened Bridge Street and realigned the intersection at Main Road. A substantial amount of the cutting on the north west corner had to go along with the Eltham Obelisk. The Obelisk was temporarily relocated to the front garden of the Eltham RSL sub-branch which was situated mid-way between Pitt Street and John Street. That temporary relocation was one of convenience for all and it remained there for several decades. Home to Eltham Shire Councillor Ernie Andrew, newsagent and his wife Ellen. Known locally as Cook's Cottage due to its resemblance to Captain Cook's cottage in Fitzroy Gardens. Ernie and Ellen can be seen standing at the entrance. Erected after Nov 1931 and before Dec 1945, most likely by 1934. The Andrews owned the property next door (downhill) and it was there that Ernie Andrew loaned land for the first Eltham Fire Station in 1928. The house on that block was present in a November 1931 aerial photograph; the subject house was not. In November 1934 Mrs Ellen Andrew leased a 5-roomed brick villa in Arthur Street to Eltham Shire Council for use as temporary offices. The new Shire office was opened in November 1940 across the road. It is possible but not yet confirmed, that the Cooks Cottage was the brick villa leased to Council and then the Andrews moved in late 1940 after Council moved into their new offices across the road. Or, they could have built Cooks Cottage and leased their old home next door to Council. Further investigation will hopefully reveal more. The cottage was situated immediately east of the underground carpark entrance off Arthur Street and directly opposite to the present-day entrance to the Eltham Village carpark. Ernie Andrew's wife, Ellen, died 13 July 1946 and Ernie died 29 March 1950. Subsequent ownership has not been identified. Aerial photos show the cottage was still present in April 1963. Local advice suggests the building was used as a doctor’s surgery in the mid-1960s. The property was purchased by Council in August 1964 and demolished shortly afterwards to provide additional area for a carpark already in existence from Pryor Street (Diamond Valley Mirror, 2 Sep. 1964, p1). This was a protest that came about when some S.E.C. workers cut down two 100-year old Oak trees in Franklin Street. We have examined aerial photos from February 1956 and two large trees are present near where number 91 is today and were gone in a January 1960 image. Alistair Knox wrote about their protest against the depradations of the State Electricty Commission in his 1980 book, We are what we stand on, pp48-49. Eltham was fighting the S.E.C. and other government authorities in the 40's and 50's over the retention of indigenous trees. In the Christmas season of 1956 our conflict with them came to a dramatic confrontation that made headline news in all the daily papers for a week. It started in the Herald, was repeated in the Sun and taken up by the Age two days later. After four days, it was appearing in the New York Times.” “Some S.E.C. workers cut down two 100-year-old oak trees in Franklin Street. The inner Eltham community launched a frontal attack on bureaucratic bungling and arrogance that they have never forgotten.” “When the chairman of the Commission delivered his New Year's speech some weeks later, he emphasised that the commission's first responsibility was to protect trees. This was the antithesis of their previous attitude. For many years to come, tree-lopping Commission workers always pretended they were not there when our small explosive group passed by. With Council assistance, we also carried out free native tree plantings on the nature strips of most roads in the Central Riding in the l 950's, when the rhododendron and the gladioli flanked by pampas grass and flowering fruit trees were still being introduced into the most 'desirable' eastern suburbs.” The protest involved personalities such as Matcham Skipper; Lesley Martin; Alistair and Margot Knox and youn Hamish; Jack, Susan, Mavis and Laurel Gill; Hal Peck; Tim Burstall and Gordon Ford The location is about halfway between Main Road and Bible Street looking north, around number 91. Looking up the hill in a northerly direction, the house on the left is George Stebbing's original cottage at 88 Pitt Street, built around 1861. Little is recorded of this early Eltham builder and we have no picture of him. He arrived from England in August 1857 and settled at Eltham after a short period at Kangaroo Ground. His occupation is often listed as a farmer but he built a number of important buildings between 1860 and 1880. Those remaining include Shillinglaw Cottage (c.1858), St. Margaret’s Church (1860), Uniting Church (formerly Methodist Church 1880) and his house at 88 Pitt Street (1861). View looking east across the Glen Park Bridge and the railway crossing towards Main Road circa 1920. The bridge was originally built as a replacement for an older private bridge built by a man named Foley around 1880. In 1911 Heidelberg and Eltham agreed to share the costs to build a new bridge (the Diamond Creek was the border between the two). Construction began in June 1915 and it was officially opened by Cr. Taylor on Cup Day, November 1915. This photo, dated around 1920, is of the Glen Park Bridge crossing over the Diamond Creek about 50 metres north of the present-day Wattletree tree Road Bridge. Glen Park Road intersected Main Rain Road along an alignment following present day Coleman Cresent. In this this picture we see the narrow wooden bridge over a high flowing Diamond Creek at Glen Park, now Eltham North. In the background is a railway crossing sign. There is a self-contained carbide streetlamp situated in front of the bridge. In the early 1900s, carbide (acetylene gas) streetlamps emerged as a lighting technology for regional towns across Victoria, Australia, before municipal electricity grids were widely established. During the late Victorian and early Edwardian eras, major hubs like Melbourne relied on centralized coal-gas infrastructure. However, small regional Victorian shires lacked the funds or population density to build large gasworks. When the commercial production of calcium carbide became viable around 1900, it offered a quantum leap in brightness over traditional kerosene streetlamps. Acetylene gas burned with an intense, crisp white flame—significantly brighter than oil or candles. Many rural towns used self-contained lampposts. A lamplighter had to climb each post daily to manually place calcium carbide pellets in a lower chamber and fill an upper chamber with water. The water dripped onto the carbide, producing acetylene gas to feed the burner. Lamplighters carefully measured the fuel amounts so the chemical reaction would naturally exhaust itself and "turn off" around midnight. While carbide streetlights provided unparalleled visibility for early motorists, cyclists, and pedestrians, they were incredibly labour-intensive and inherently volatile. The gas was highly explosive, prone to leaks, and left behind a pungent, sulphur-like odour. By the end of World War I, local Victorian councils rapidly phased out acetylene infrastructure in favour of safer, independent electric powerhouse generators. In the context of Eltham's local history, the Eltham Shire and surrounding Yarra Valley region actively relied on carbide streetlamps and kerosene lighting during the early 20th century before the expansion of the Melbourne electric grid. Eltham was an outer-rural, heavily timbered farming and orchard district at the turn of the century, it faced unique civic infrastructure challenges. In rural Eltham, early streetlamps were exceptionally sparse. The community relied heavily on "innkeeper laws" which dictated local hotels—such as the historic Eltham Hotel—were legally required to keep external oil, kerosene, or acetylene lamps burning through the night to illuminate the main roads for travellers and coaches. The volatile carbide and kerosene lamps on Eltham's main thoroughfares were progressively phased out during the 1920s. The district steadily transitioned to electricity, which allowed for developments like the installation of modern electrical wiring at the local fire station on Arthur Street by 1928. The Glen Park Bridge was a low structure and subject to flooding readily. In 1959 Eltham Council erected a new crossing over the Diamond Creek and realigned the road to the present-day Wattletree Road Bridge. W. and C. Page’s Evelyn Store was in the centre of the Eltham township in the 1860s. It was situated on the eastern side of Maria Street (Main Road) on what was Lot 355 of Josiah Holloway’s Plan of Subdivision of Little Eltham The property is described as having a frontage of one hundred and fifty one feet six inches to Maria-street by a depth of one hundred and thirty two feet with John Street on the south side. That property is now known as 816 Main Road and is occupied by Goodstart Early Learning Eltham. William Austin Page and Charlotte Moyses were married in the last quarter of 1840 in Wisbech, Cambridgeshire, England. Records of their arrival in Australia have not been found. The first record of W.A and C. Page, General Merchants is an advertisement placed in The Argus newspaper in February 1854 for The White Flag Store in Wellington Street, Collingwood. William Austin Page is next recorded in the 1856 Electoral Roll for Evelyn as a storekeeper of Little Eltham. The nature of his qualification being a dwelling house in Little Eltham. There is no C. Page recorded so it is likely that this is William’s wife. It is not known when the store was built, possibly at the direction of W. and C. Page but most likely circa 1855-1856. The Page’s previous business in 1854 being The White Flag Store in Wellington Street, Collingwood. On 21 April 1857, W.A. Page along with John Pearson, Richard Warren (owner of the Eltham Hotel), James Kiddle and Thomas Marland petitioned the Licensing Magistrates of the District of Heidelberg, seeking for better police protection for the district. They pointed out that Eltham had two hotels, a local population of about a thousand persons, a great number of them strangers employed on the public roads. The Bourke District police inspector investigated and recommended that the application be approved; and he advised the Chief Commissioner of the availability of a cottage (not very good) and a two-stalled stable with a fenced paddock of four acres, for the sum of ten shillings a week. This was William Jarrold' s cottage, on the west side of Main Road which became Eltham's first police station - with Constable George Reid in charge. In 1858 the newly established Eltham Road District Board implemented a rate charge. For the year ending October 14, 1858, William A. Page of Little Eltham was listed as the owner and occupier of a shop in Little Eltham, assessed 10 shillings based on building rate of 6d per £, the store valued at £20. The same was assessed for 1859 through 1861. The business was advertised for sale with four years remaining on the then present lease in October 1860. Apparently, there was a lack of interest as they attempted to sell the business again in September 1861 with three years remaining on the lease. Again, to no avail. No record of W.A. Page or the store appears in the 1862 rates assessment however in 1863 the store was valued at £25, owned by T. Hunniford and occupied by W.A. Page. Presumably Thomas Hunniford, purchased the property in 1862 and it may have been unoccupied for a period of time or the owner/occupier entries could have been transposed incorrectly in the rates book. In April 1863, William Austin Page, storekeeper of Little Eltham advertised his intention to have Lot 345 (sic) of Josiah Holloway’s Plan of Subdivision brought under the provisions of the Real Property Act. The property is described as having a frontage of one hundred and fifty one feet six inches to Maria-street by a depth of one hundred and thirty two feet with John Street on the south side. The actual lot described is Lot 355 and this is most likely the location of Page’s Evelyn Store. This action suggests the Pages remained owners of the property and this move was to facilitate a future sale. By September 1867 the Pages had been appointed official agents for The Leader newspaper. In January 1868 the business was once again put up for sale, the owners having been in business 12 years and desirous to return to England. Once more it did not sell and was offered again for sale in March and October of that year. Presumably businesses must have been difficult to sell in those times. No further evidence has been located so far of the Pages having sold their business, but an advertisement was placed in December 1870 offering the store and dwelling house for sale, presently occupied by the Pages. The property was finally sold January 28, 1871, by auction for £150. Whether the Pages ever did return to England, at least for a visit also has not been established but death records show William Austin Page died 12 April 1884 and his wife Charlotte died 4 August 1896. Built in 1852 as the Fountain of Friendship Hotel, later named the Fountain Hotel it was located on the southwest corner of Maria (Main) and Pitt streets. Also later known as the Evelyn Hotel, it was de-licensed in 1919. The hotel was totally destroyed by fire on Wednesday, February 18, 1931 Sometime between June 1851 and 1854, the property at the top of the hill of Little Eltham described as Lot 235 of plan of subdivision, of portion number 12, of section number 4, of the parish of Nillumbik, on the county of Evelyn was purchased from J.M. Holloway and the Fountain of Friendship Hotel was built using prefabricated sections constructed from cedar timber, imported from Singapore. By 1854, John O’Brien, a somewhat shady character was the proprietor of the hotel when he put it up for sale in November 1854. It is not clear whether he was the original owner / builder. John O’Brien purchased several other lots in Little Eltham from a Robert Wells but did not pay the balance for these lots and skipped town as soon as he sold the Fountain Hotel to Charles Roberts. Following the somewhat dodgy business practices of John O’Brien, little is known of Charles Roberts but it is possible he enjoyed several years of ownership. It was put up for sale again in 1858 but no outcome of that sale is known, and it was advertised to let in 1863, again possibly to no avail. James Trew took it over in July 1864 but his association was short lived with his premature death in December of that year leaving his widow Mary to take over and run the enterprise. No other details regarding ownership or issuances of licenses to run a public house have been identified so it is possible that Mary Trew managed the business until it was eventually advertised To Let in December 1870. George Merrick took over the hotel and was granted a license at the end of March 1871 but he too was destined to follow in the footsteps of James Trew and died prematurely at age 40 just six months later, in September 1871. John Treloar then took over the hotel but sometime between 1872 and 1873 the license was transferred to Bejamin Gane. Gane it seems held the license for the majority of the 1870s At some point between December 1874 and September 1878 the name of the hotel is changed from the Fountain Hotel to the Evelyn Hotel. In March 1880, ownership is transferred to James Purcell, a former Councillor of the Shire of Eltham’s North Riding. Purcell’s ownership of the hotel is associated with the 1880s though there is a brief period in 1887 where the license is granted to a Lawrence Brennan, reasons unknown. In December 1889, James Purcell ownership of the Evelyn hotel throughout the 1880s comes to an end when William Morris purchases the property and the license is transferred to him. Ownership of the property remains within the Morris family for the next 40 plus years and it is the Morris name that is most associated with its history. William Morris was a Councillor with the Shire of Eltham for a continuous 24 year period. He served as Shire President for three terms. It appears he did very well with the Evelyn Hotel and his entertainment and dining experiences are well regarded. Built in 1852 as the Fountain of Friendship Hotel, later named the Fountain Hotel it was located on the southwest corner of Maria (Main) and Pitt streets. Also later known as the Evelyn Hotel, it was de-licensed in 1919. The hotel was totally destroyed by fire on Wednesday, February 18, 1931 Sometime between June 1851 and 1854, the property at the top of the hill of Little Eltham described as Lot 235 of plan of subdivision, of portion number 12, of section number 4, of the parish of Nillumbik, on the county of Evelyn was purchased from J.M. Holloway and the Fountain of Friendship Hotel was built using prefabricated sections constructed from cedar timber, imported from Singapore. By 1854, John O’Brien, a somewhat shady character was the proprietor of the hotel when he put it up for sale in November 1854. It is not clear whether he was the original owner / builder. John O’Brien purchased several other lots in Little Eltham from a Robert Wells but did not pay the balance for these lots and skipped town as soon as he sold the Fountain Hotel to Charles Roberts. Following the somewhat dodgy business practices of John O’Brien, little is known of Charles Roberts but it is possible he enjoyed several years of ownership. It was put up for sale again in 1858 but no outcome of that sale is known, and it was advertised to let in 1863, again possibly to no avail. James Trew took it over in July 1864 but his association was short lived with his premature death in December of that year leaving his widow Mary to take over and run the enterprise. No other details regarding ownership or issuances of licenses to run a public house have been identified so it is possible that Mary Trew managed the business until it was eventually advertised To Let in December 1870. George Merrick took over the hotel and was granted a license at the end of March 1871 but he too was destined to follow in the footsteps of James Trew and died prematurely at age 40 just six months later, in September 1871. John Treloar then took over the hotel but sometime between 1872 and 1873 the license was transferred to Bejamin Gane. Gane it seems held the license for the majority of the 1870s At some point between December 1874 and September 1878 the name of the hotel is changed from the Fountain Hotel to the Evelyn Hotel. In March 1880, ownership is transferred to James Purcell, a former Councillor of the Shire of Eltham’s North Riding. Purcell’s ownership of the hotel is associated with the 1880s though there is a brief period in 1887 where the license is granted to a Lawrence Brennan, reasons unknown. In December 1889, James Purcell ownership of the Evelyn hotel throughout the 1880s comes to an end when William Morris purchases the property and the license is transferred to him. Ownership of the property remains within the Morris family for the next 40 plus years and it is the Morris name that is most associated with its history. William Morris was a Councillor with the Shire of Eltham for a continuous 24 year period. He served as Shire President for three terms. This is a set of 24 photographs taken at the Warrant Officer and Sergeant’s Mess Summer Ball held at the Army Survey Regiment (ASR), Fortuna Villa circa 1990. Photos of personnel and their guests was taken on their arrival in locations inside Fortuna Villa and its surrounding gardens. The Ball and Dinner was held in the gardens of Fortuna Villa and in temporary 20’ x 30’ Army tents set up on the roadway in front of the transport compound. Australian Army Catering Corps staff provided the catering. Refer to item 6455.14P for additional photographs taken at the Summer Ball. This is a set of 12 photographs of A Section, 1st Topographic Survey Troop taken from the 25th of May to the 12th of June 1966 during their deployment to Vung Tau, Vietnam. Led by OC CAPT Bob Skitch, the ten personnel from A Section 1st Topo Svy Tp and six personnel from supporting units were the first contingent from the Royal Australian Survey Corps deployed to provide topographic support to the Australian Task Force in Vietnam. They arrived in Saigon, Vietnam on the 10th of June 1966 enroute to the Australian Reinforcement Unit (ARU) “back beach” camp in Vung Tau. The ten RA Svy technical personnel from 1st Topo Svy Tp deployed were: WO2 David Christie, SGT Stan Campbell, SGT Dave King, CPL Jim Roberts, CPL Dennis Duquemin, CPL Des Ceruti, SPR Derek Chambers, SPR Brian Firns, SPR Joe O’Connor and SPR Ron Smith. External personnel deployed were: WO2 Snow Rollston from Northern Command Field Survey Unit, T/CPL Peter Clarke – orderly room corporal, T/CPL Alan Carew – Technical Storeman, SPR Stan Johns – Map Storeman, SPR Boots Campbell – batman/driver and PTE BNF Brunning – cook. The ship featured in photos .1P and .2P was the aircraft carrier HMAS Sydney on its 4th voyage to Vietnam. On board were SGT Stan Campbell and SPR Brian Firns, tasked to manage A Section’s stores and equipment. The rest of A Section deployed to Vietnam by air on the chartered Qantas 707B ‘City of Longreach'. A Section’s main tasks were to establish a Theatre Grid, map compilation and map revision; Engineer Survey Support in the camp and to the civil community; give assistance to the Cordon Search Missions by producing large scale plots from aerial photos with every house and fence etc plotted; and then reproduce these by silk screening usually, within a 24-hour period. RA Svy’s support concluded with the withdrawal of Australian troops from Vietnam in 1972. William Bateman Snr was born to parents Daniel Bateman and Patience Wilkinson in Bradford, Yorkshire, England in approx. 1794. He married Sarah Smith on 20th November 1815 in Bradford, Yorkshire, England. They had four children – Patience (Born abt 1817), Daniel (born abt 1819) William (born abt 1831) & James (born abt 1837)all born in England. William Snr and Sarah Bateman and two sons – William and James - arrived in Australia in approx 1853. They brought with them considerable capital/stock and bought into a business in Warrnambool in William Jnr’s name. Bateman & Co rapidly became the largst mercantile business in the area and did rather extensive business with the Banks of Victoria and Australiasia. It is thought that William Snr assisted in the business to some extent, expecially financially. His other son Daniel (who remained in England) is also thought to have had a financial interest in the business as a dormant partner. The business was so prominent, Bateman & Co issued round copper tokens as a Trade Token - value one penny. These were inscribed with the Business name and were limited in their use to the business. In Sept 1856 the business was transferred to a Mr. Thos W. Sellars (nephew of William Bateman Jnr) and shortly afterwards the store closed with an order for the sequestration of the insolvents estate, but was not made absolute until December 1856 when the Insolvency court ruled for the “compulsory sequestration” of the business due to fraudulent activities within the business. But in the meantime in early November fire completely destroyed the business which left only the insurance payouts. Both William Bateman Snr and William Bateman Jnr are listed on the Pioneers’ Honour Board in the foyer of the Warrnambool Library. It is reported William Bateman Jnr was a trustee of Christ Church, was a City Councillor, and was involved in many other community organisations. He also subscribed towards the cost of building a permanent Church which was opened in 1856. William Bateman Snr died in Warrnambool on 30/03/1868 and his wife Sarah died in August 1868. William Bateman Jnr presented to Christ Church, stained glass windows in memory of his parents William & Sarah Bateman. William Bateman Jnr died in June 1913. Four stained glass windows, three lancet and one circular. The theme of the lancet windows depicts the three occasions when the apostles Peter, James and John were Jesus' sole attendants: The raising of Jairus' daughter. On the Mount of Transfiguration. In the Garden of Gethsemane. The circular window in the gable of the wall represents "The Enthroned Christ".

This is a set of 14 photographs of a visit to the Army Survey Regiment, Fortuna, Bendigo on the 5th of June 1979 by the Chief of the General Staff (CGS) Lieutenant General Sir Donald Dunstan AC, KBE, CB. He was accompanied by his wife. They were escorted through the production areas of the Army Survey Regiment by the CO LTCOL Bob Skitch. Lieutenant General Sir Donald Dunstan AC, KBE, CB was an esteemed Australian Army officer, who was CGS from 1977 to 1982. Upon retirement from the Army in 1982, he was appointed to the position of Governor of South Australia from 1982 to 1991. LTCOL Bob Skitch was the CO of the Army Svy Rgt from 1976 to 1980. Also featuring in these photos is MAJ Peter Eddy, who was the OC of Air Survey Squadron. He was later promoted to LTCOL and was CO of the Army Svy Rgt from 1981 to 1982. The origin of the book goes back to 2007 when a tin of nitrate negatives (Cat No 1248.2) came to the Bendigo RSL Museum via Aylene Kirkwood (Eaglehawk Heritage Society) and her friend Jean Grinton, Jack Grintons Daughter. The tin of negatives had been sitting in a shed at Jeans place for many years. The RSL Museum sorted some to see what they were about and were mostly WW1 era overseas. The Museum had some reproduced by Wayne Eels a Dark Room Technician and the quality was amazing. A small number were shown at an exhibition in a talk by Museum Curator Peter Ball in March 2008. The exhibition was called “Snapshots and Stories” by Corrine Perkin from the Bendigo Art Gallery and included a number of Bendigo Historical groups. The RSL Museum by then had put together 44 images in 11 frames to make a story (cat No's 5880P to 5890P) and shown at the Bendigo District RSL Sub Branch Inc in April 2008. The exhibition included memorabilia from Jean Grinton. Corrine Perkin who was at the opening spoke to the Curator Peter Ball with the view that a travelling exhibition could be made from this. After discussions then began 12 months research between Corinne and Peter identifying people in the photos, places, deciphering Jack's Diary, researching the 38th Bn to gain an overall picture of Jack and Bert Grinton, producing photos for quality. Eventually an exhibition of photos (Cat No's 7100P to 7179P), story boards with photos (Cat No's 7180 to 7187) came into being. The opening was at the Bendigo Art Gallery on the evening of June 13th 2009 with Les Carlyon as guest speaker and went through until August 2nd. The exhibition was accompanied by memorabilia of Jacks Daughter Jean and Bert's Daughter Dorothy. The exhibition then went onto 4 more locations including the Melbourne Shrine of Remembrance. This set of 32 photographs were taken at the Corps Day Parade held at the Army Survey Regiment, Bendigo on the 28th of June 1990. The Parade Commander was CO LTCOL Rene van den Tol, and the Reviewing Officer was the Director of the Survey Corps - COL Don Swiney MBE. The Corps Day Parade was held on a wet and miserable day to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the formation of the Royal Australian Survey Corps. This occasion was one of several events held in 1990 to commemorate the 75th anniversary. Sunday school was held in a little 16 foot square wooden building which came from Rocky Valley after it was no longer needed there. Ewen Wallace's father initiated and organised the move. C2011 the building was knocked down because of white ants. This was a detachment from 1st Topographic Survey Troop, which was to give cartographic support to the Australian Task Force. Their main tasks were to establish a Theatre Grid, map compilation and map revision. Engineer Survey Support in the camp and to the civil community and give assistance to the Cordon Search Missions by producing large scale plots from aerial photos with every house and fence etc plotted and then reproduce these by silk screening usually, within a 24-hour period. This support concluded with the withdrawal of Australian troops from Vietnam in 1972. For more information on the career of A Section’s OC MAJ Peter Constantine AM, refer to item 6159P or 6092P. He was the CO of the Army Survey Regiment from 1975 to 1976 and CO of the School of Military Survey (SMS) from 1976 to his retirement in January 1982. His memoirs of active duty in Vietnam ‘Surveyor - Printer Behind the Lines’ was published in 2022. 2IC CAPT Frank Thorogood SB St J’s career culminated at the rank of LTCOL as the CO Army Survey Regiment from 1980 to 1981. Victorian Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (VIOSH) Australia is the Asia-Pacific centre for teaching and research in occupational health and safety (OHS) and is known as one of Australia's leaders on the field.
