The donor of the petticoat is Ms Nancy Maggs. Nancy's grand-mother, Sarah Flagg, was the owner of the petticoat. Sarah Flagg and her family arrived in Melbourne in the 1840s.Sarah Flagg was the original owner of the petticoat. Sarah was the grand-mother of Nancy Maggs. Nancy Maggs had the petticoat in her possession before she donated it to the City of Moorabbin Historical Society.White half, floor-length petticoat with 3 tiers. A light blue ribbon woven around at knee length of the petticoat. Broderie anglais trimming round the first two tiers and through sections of the bottom half of the petticoat. There are 6 panels of the same embroided floral design which runs around the outside of the petticoat, between the Broderie anglais sections. There is a small side slit on the top right-hand side of the petticoat. Two small buttons are located down the side of the slit, but the third button is missing. This petticoat came from the estate of Ena Heazlewood and was donated to the Warrnambool and District Historical Society by Ena’s daughter. It appears to have been home-made. Mary Josephine (Ena) Todd was born in Warrnambool in 1920 and worked as a hairdresser at Josephine’s Salon in Warrnambool. In 1942 she married a Warrnambool man, Jack Heazlewood, a stoker on the H.M.A.S. Sydney at the time. They later lived in Sydney. A petticoat such as this one would have been stiffened with starch and worn under a ball dress (or a stage costume) in the mid 20th century. This petticoat is of interest as an example of a skirt worn underneath a ballroom dress or a stage costume in the mid 20th century. It also has some provenance as it come from the estate of Ena Heazlewood, a former Warrnambool resident.This item is a white cotton petticoat with a flap opening at the front waist enclosed by two white buttons. The petticoat is gathered at the waist to make a wide flared skirt and has alternating panels of plain white cotton and broderie anglaise material. There is a flounce at the end stitched with cotton-covered rope at the top and the bottom of the flounce. Most of the petticoats were netlike crinoline, Worn by Marjorie Burton. It may have been worn underneath dresses with full skirts or may have been designed for a short style wedding dress. Marjorie Burton ( nee Whiteman), born 12 June, in Birmingham, England came to Orbost in 1995. In England she did office work – typing, shorthand and secretarial work - in accountants’ offices and also trained as a comptometrist with Burroughs in London. She came from a middle-class, working, church-going family. Her mother was a milliner who mademany of Marjorie’s clothes, hats and outfits. Marjorie was married in 1938 to a salesman who later became a mechanic in the R.A.F. This item is an example of ahome-made item of clothing and reflects the needlework skills of women in the first half of the twentieth century.A coarse, net, white starched petticoat. This appears to be a "special" petticoat, one that could have been made as part of of a trousseau in preparation for marriage.This item is an example of the skills shown by the women of Orbost in the late 19th to early 20th centuries.A full-length fine cotton petticoat with lace around the neck and bodice and about 50cm of lace at the bottom of the garment. This petticoat likely belonged to Ellen Dowsett (1858-1953) of Maidstone, Victoria. This style of clothing was common in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, and this specific example was most likely in use in the 1890s. It could also have belonged to Ellen's daughter, Ruby May Selina Wallace (1891-1973), although this is less likely. It was donated by an Emerald resident who received it from Ruby. Petticoats and underskirts were worn for several purposes; this one may have been used to add warmth and/or comfort to a larger outfit. It was made with a sewing machine, but throughout its use was hand-repaired: handsewn stitches mark the addition of an extra piece of fabric or the repair of a deteriorating stitch near the hem.This petticoat is an example of 1890s fashion and the handiwork that went into prolonging its lifespan.This petticoat/underskirt is entirely constructed from black satin. Near the waistband, the underskirt is fastened with three press-stud buttons and a hook. There are five stitch lines down the length of the petticoat, where separate pieces of fabric were joined to create the finished product. At the hem, an additional piece of the same fabric is handsewn on the inside of the petticoat with green-brown string; this may have been added to repair or lengthen the skirt. The hem includes a ribbon of purple fabric adorned with a purple fringe on the inside of the skirt. While modern clothing sizes cannot be mapped exactly to those of the past, today it would be considered to be about a size 10.N/Aclothing, 1890s
