A photo of Captain P E Potts in Charleroi, Belgium in 1919. The note on the back mentions he was part of a 2nd Division concert party that helped raise funds to erect a war memorial in Mont St Quentin. Mont St Quentin was a site of a major battle in 1916 where 3000 Australian soldiers died in 3 days. Another photo from Charleroi in 1919 is at 01900 and Captain Potts may be one of the officers in the front row. An album of newspaper clippings and photos compiled to thank Legatee Philip E Potts when he was leaving Melbourne in 1928. L/ Potts was president of Legacy in 1927-28. The album was compiled by Legatee Frank Doolan. The articles included the first annual demonstration being held on 28 March 1928 with 300 junior legatees performing. Legatee Aaron Beattie was in charge with help from Mrs Gillies and Jim Tierney. Also articles about the proposed building of the Shrine of Remembrance and the appeal for funds. One page shows pictures of a social event held on the Burns Philp ship 'Marella'. Another photo of Marella is in the collection. Legatee Potts was manager of the old-established shipping firm Burns, Philip and Co Ltd. He also was president of the Melbourne 'Highland Pipe Band, a councillor of the Melbourne Scots and English Speaking Union, and a member of the Rotary Club. A large photo of soldiers from the first World War. It is almost identical to one in the AWM. From the AWM record it is the 2nd Pioneer Battalion before they returned to Australia. From Wikipedia the 2nd Pioneer Battalion was tasked with digging trenches, labouring, constructing strong points and light railways, and undertaking battlefield clearance, the troops assigned to the pioneers required construction and engineering experience in addition to basic soldiering skills. After the Armistice personnel were repatriated to Australia in drafts as part of the gradual demobilisation of the AIF, the battalion's strength dwindled until finally it was disbanded on 18 May 1919 while in the Charleroi area of Belgium. The men are standing on the steps of the Palais de Justice in Charleroi. The lion is one of a pair made by Antoine-Felix Boure a Belgium sculptor, who was renowned for his portrayal of lions. This pair is called Totor et Tutur. The Palais de Justice was replaced by a new building in the 1960s and the lions now stand in the garden of the Palais de Justice. The soldiers wear different uniforms depending on their rank. This photo is a good example of some of them. Legatee Philip E Potts who was president in 1927-28, was a Captain in the 2nd Pioneer Battalion and is likely to be in this photo. Or the photo belonged to him. A menu card for a dinner given to farewell Legacy President Philip Potts as he left to be part of the Scottish delegation in March 1928. Legatee Potts was the current Legacy President and this promotion meant he had to step down and Legatee CH Peters took over the rest of the 1927-8 tenure. The text of menu has joking references to other Legatees which shows their comradeship and camaraderie. An album of significant events in March 1928 was compiled and presented to Legatee Potts by Legatee Frank Doolan. (see 02134). The album includes the first annual demonstration, appeals for funds to build the Shrine and farewell notices from Legacy newsletters.A record that Legatees held very significant positions in their lives outside of Legacy.
