The Wodonga Historical Society Haeusler Collection provides invaluable insight into life in late nineteenth and early twentieth century north east Victoria. The collection comprises manuscripts, personal artefacts used by the Haeusler family on their farm in Wodonga, and a set of glass negatives which offer a unique visual snapshot of the domestic and social lives of the Haeusler family and local Wodonga community. The Haeusler family migrated from Prussia (Germany) to South Australia in the 1840s and 1850s, before purchasing 100 acres of Crown Land made available under the Victorian Lands Act 1862 (also known as ‘Duffy’s Land Act’) in 1866 in what is now Wodonga West. The Haeusler family were one of several German families to migrate from South Australia to Wodonga in the 1860s. This dark room equipment belonged to Louis Haeusler (b.1878) and is one of the many objects in the Haeusler Collection that represent home and social life in early twentieth century Wodonga.This item has well documented provenance and a known owner. It forms part of a significant and representative historical collection which reflects the local history of Wodonga. This desk globe was owned by Evelyn Bessie Travaskis and used when teaching at State School Wairewa where she taught from 2-2-1945 until her retirement on 29-6-1956. She retired from the Education Department temporary staff, aged 76. ( More info.from Newsletter November 2015 by John Phillips). The Philips' Challenge Globe was commonly used in Australian schools in the teaching of geography. This item is associated with the history of education in East Gippsland. The "British Queen Hotel", in Bridge street, Bendigo was first licensed to Squire Barlow (1817-1882), a Lancashire man who came to Australia in 1853 with his two eldest sons, travelling on the "Goldfinder". His wife Mary (nee Taylor, 1814-1891) soon followed with the rest of their children. One more child was born in Sandhurst in 1856. Squire and Mary had married in 1838, "The British Queen" was taken over by John Crowe (1825-1882) some time after 1876. John had previously been the licesee of the Globe Hotel, also in Bridge Street. When John died in 1881, his son Robert Phillip Crowe (Phillip) transferred the licence to John Hope in 1882.Black and white photograph. Phillip Dresher (1823-1906), was born in Germany and emigrated to Ireland before coming to Australia in 1852. He was married to Margaret Cosgrove. After Phillip died his son John Thomas (1873-1919) took over the business. John Thomas was also a watchman for the fire brigade.black and white photograph. The ship was built in 1953 by Ferguson Shipbuilders of Port Glasgow, Scotland for the Port Phillip Sea Pilots organisation as a pilot cutter. Her role as a pilot cutter was to sail with pilots on board to meet ships entering Port Phillip Bay. On 29 August 1908 Melbourne gaped in wonder as 16 white-hulled battleships of the United States Atlantic Fleet, carrying 14,000 naval personnel, steamed into Port Phillip Bay. The ‘Great White Fleet’ was circumnavigating the globe on a tour launched by President Theodore Roosevelt.
