Peter’s Project is an organization set up to raise funds for a Regional Cancer Care Centre in Warrnambool and to manage the Centre after it is built. The project was initially set up by Vicki Jellie in memory of her husband, Peter, who died of cancer some years earlier. The main aim was to build a centre for the treatment of cancer in Warrnambool so that many cancer sufferers did not have to go to Geelong or Melbourne for treatment. Government and local Council funds have been obtained for the project with the general public contributing to an appeal to raise $5 million. This target has been reached. The building is currently being erected. This invitation to the Official Launch of the appeal was sent to Bill Phillpot who was the Director of the appeal. This invitation is of some interest as it indicates the launch of the public appeal for funds for Peter’s Project and it is a great example of one person commencing a community campaign which was very successful and will have far-reaching results. This is a single-sheet card sent to Bill Phillpot by the Directors and Committee of Peter’s Project Ltd and the Premier of Victoria, Dr Denis Napthine. The bearer of this ticket was George Thomas Henry Phillpot who was only 17 years old at the time he sailed. George relates his trip, summarised as follows; he caught a bus from Bolton to Manchester, in north west U.K then the train from Manchester to London and the boat train to Tilbury Docks (near Gravesend). On the morning of June 7th 1929 the ship S.S.Ballarat sailed down the Thames estuary and into the English Channel. The next port of call was Southampton, UK, to take on board some technical equipment. The S.S.Ballarat then sailed through the Bay of Biscay. Instead of taking the customary route around the Cape of Good Hope, this trip was going to be her maiden voyage through the Suez Canal. She sailed through the Straits of Gibraltar and into the Mediterranean Sea and on to Malta, where George and others paid a local boat owner to take them ashore for a short time. They then sailed to Port Said , stopping to load cargo, then at night through the Suez Canal. They woke up early the next morning to watch the locals working on the banks of the canal. The excessive heat on board the ship caused much illness. As they travelled through the Red Sea the heat and the smell of oil also caused sickness. On they went through the Arabian Sea to Colombo the capital of Sri Lanka (which at that time was called Ceylon). A Navigation Slip, donated together with this ticket, shows the coordinates for a location 16 miles from Colombo. They again went ashore for a meal at four-pence a head and a bottle of lemonade for a penny. George and another passenger walked to the slums area and were shocked at the state of it compared to Britain’s slums. They then sailed via the Indian Ocean to Freemantle, stopping again, stopping for goods to be unloaded. While ashore they played a game of soccer against the ship’s crew. Then on to Port Adelaide via the Great Australian Bight. Here shopped for suitable clothing under the advice of some Australian passengers. They then arrived at Port of Melbourne on July 20th 1929 and two days later (on George’s mother’s birthday) George left for Warrnambool. He received his Citizenship Award in 1971. He conducted an electrical retail business in Liebig Street for many years; his son William became principal of the accounting business Sinclair and Wilson, on the retirement of Bill Sinclair, and was actively involved in support of many community organisations. His daughter-in-law, Glenys Phillpot, is actively involved in the Warrnambool community and local government. George was one of 3 orphans on S.S. Ballarat. (The daughter and son-in-law of one of the other orphans also live in Warrnambool.). (Herbert B.G. Larkin, whose rubber-stamped name appears on the ticket, later migrated to Australia and passed away in NSW in 1944.)Of Historical Significance, this ticket is for the ship’s maiden voyage via the Suez Canal route (previously the ship travelled via the Cape of Good Hope). It is also the only existing ticket for the "S.S.Ballarat"(3rd) in our collection. Socially it shows the fare, luggage restrictions, conditions and weekly provisions for a third class passenger’s voyage from London to Melbourne, which has research potential. This ticket is also of significance to the Local Community, giving the background of the ancestor of a local family. It was also of Personal Significance to the bearer as he kept and preserved it in his possession for at least 46 years before donating it to our museum, together with a Navigation Slip, a map and a summary of his journey to Australia.Third Class (steerage) Passenger’s Contract Ticket for for passage on board the P & O line’s S.S.Ballarat, from Port of London to Port of Melbourne. The ticket is a thin paper page, printed on both sides, in very good condition. It has creases as though it has been folded. The passenger’s details, date of sailing (7th June 1929), amount paid and signature of the P & O Branch Service’s representative have been filled in. The ticket has information including a list of weekly provisions for the voyage, disclaimer of the shipping company, a list of dangerous goods not to be carried on board and fines. The page has straight edges top and bottom. The side edges are torn along perforations; some of the perforated holes can be seen. Along the inside of each perforation is printed a small fleur de lies, forming a decorative left and right border.The ticket has been stamped in black, No. ‘1040’. It has handwritten details with black pen and ink. The date of departure is written ‘Seventh June (192)9’ for the cost of,’33’ (poind), and the sum of ‘33’ pound is acknowledged as received. ‘Mr George T.H. PHILLPOT’, the age is written as ‘17’, equal to the status of ‘1’ adult, the total number of persons is ‘One’. The fare is handwritten in pen £’33’ and the total £’33’. It has a purple stamp ‘HERBT. B G LARKIN’ and a crossed out stamp ‘FREDERICK WHITE, and a handwritten signature ‘_Seymore’. Deakin University was established in 1974 as the fourth university in Victoria. It has a number of campuses around the state including Warrnambool where it merged with The Warrnambool Institute of Advanced Education in 1990. The university was named after Alfred Deakin, three times Prime Minister of Australia and leading figure in the process of Federation in Australia. Each year a number of students graduate from the Warrnambool Campus which is located on the Eastern edge of Warrnambool on the banks of the Hopkins River. In 2015, there were graduands from the faculties of Arts and Education, Business and Law, Science and health. Deakin University occupies an important educational position In Warrnambool and district. This is a booklet giving the names and addresses of voters for the local Council in Levy’s Ward in the City of Warrnambool in 2002. At that time the Warrnambool City Council was divided into seven Wards with one Councillor representing each Ward. The seven Wards at that time were Levy’s, Botanic, Cassady, Pertobe, Proudfoot, Sherwood, and Wollaston. In 2004 the Wards were abolished and seven Councillors today represent the whole City of Warrnambool. In 2002 Glenys Phillpot was the Councillor representing Levy’s Ward. This booklet is of interest as it contains the names and addresses of those enrolled in Levy’s Ward in Warrnambool in 2002. It will be a useful booklet for researchers. In 2005 the H.M.A.S. Warrnambool was de-commissioned in Darwin and the Mayor of Warrnambool, Cr Glenys Phillpot, was present at the ceremonies connected to this event. She obtained this sailor’s hat at that time as a souvenir of the ship. It appears to be brand new. H.M.A.S. Warrnambool was the second ship with this name. The first H.M.A.S. Warrnambool was built in Sydney in 1941 and commissioned for anti-submarine and mine sweeping duties. In 1947 it was struck by a mine in northern Australian waters and sunk with the loss of four lives. The second H.M.A.S. Warrnambool was commissioned in 1981as a patrol boat in northern Australian waters. It had steamed over 500,000 miles before the end of its working life in 2005 and had visited Warrnambool several times. This sailor’s cap is of importance as a memento of the second ship named H.M.A.S. Warrnambool and particularly commemorates the de-commissioning of that ship in 2005 in Darwin. This is a white seaman’s hat with a flat oval-shaped crown made of stiffened white material with two white metal eyelets on each side. The base has a black ribbon with a black bow and lettering in woven gold thread. Inside there is a leather band with a white bow and a navy blue ribbon to act as a chin strap. This is attached on one side only. Inside also is a white label with the maker’s information on it. H.M.A.S. This Bible belonged to Minnie Maud Middleton (d. 1958). She came from Framlingham, near Warrnambool. Miss Middleton’s parents, Hannah and Thomas, brought the Bible to Australia from England in the 1870s. The Bible, printed in 1816, contains a pencil drawing of the Roydon Church of England where the Middletons worshipped in England. This Bible is of interest as an example of a Bible that many families owned, treasured and read in times gone by and especially in the 19th century. It has local provenance.This is a Bible with a hard leather cover and the spine covering replaced at some stage. The front and back of the book are much rubbed and scored. The pages are numbered according to the sections and the font varies with two columns to each page. There are over 40 black and white illustrations (from engravings) and several pressed ferns. Some pages are damaged. There are four loose sheets. Brown’s Holy Bible printed 1816 Presented to G. Phillpot 80 Kelp St Warrnambool in 1953 by Miss M. Middleton of Bendigo, late of Framlingham. Was brought to Australia by Miss Middleton’s parents approx 80 years ago. The pencil drawing is of Roydon Church of England where Miss Middleton’s parents worshipped. This is a souvenir pennant of the H.M.A.S. Warrnambool, named after the City of Warrnambool in Victoria. This ship was the second of that name. The first H. M.A.S. Warrnambool, launched in 1941, was one of 60 Bathurst-class corvettes commissioned by the Australian Government. It was involved in mine clearance work in the Great Barrier Reef after World War Two. The mines had been laid by the Australian Government during the war to protect Australian waters. In 1947 the first H.M.A.S. Warrnambool was sunk by one of these mines and lies on the ocean floor off Cockburn Reef in northern Queensland. The second H.M.A.S. Warrnambool was commissioned in 1981 and was a Fremantle-class patrol boat assisting in capturing illegal fishing boats and participating in military exercises in Australian waters. In 2005 the second H.M.A.S. Warrnambool was decommissioned after 24 years’ service. This pennant is important as a souvenir of the H.M.A.S Warrnambool, a ship that had obvious links with the City of Warrnambool. In 2005 the Mayor of Warrnambool, Glenys Phillpot, attended the decommissioning of this ship at Darwin and brought back several souvenirs of the ship. This is a triangular-shaped pennant made of dark blue felt material. It has stitching at the straight edge with two tabs for attaching the pennant to a pole or post. The pennant has a badge of yellow, black and white tonings printed or stamped on to the felt. The badge includes a white unicorn, a stylized ship and crown, a boomerang and two other implements and the motto, ‘Protect and Avenge’. The words, ‘H.M.A.S.
