James claimed only a few days before his death in June 1893 that 'Bendigo was named after a bullock driver, Jack Langdon, to whom was given the name of 'Bendigo' because he was constantly talking about the pugilistic celebrity and also fancied he was a bit of a 'Bendigo' himself'. (Obituary 13 June, 1893) Two foolscap typed pages recounting James Mouat's recollections of how Bendigo was named. Pages have been taken from a lined journal.
