The School Endowment Plantation Scheme was established in 1922 as a joint venture between the Education Department and the FCV. It was administered by the Education Department with technical supervision by the Commission. While some plantations were established on private land donated or leased for the purpose, most were established on Crown Lands or Reserved Forest made available, without cost, by the State. (https://www.victoriasforestryheritage.org.au/community/schools.html, accessed 26 September 2020) Throughout the Nerrina district numerous areas of public land were set aside as school endowment plantations as part of various schools’ educational resources. The plantations were initially established to instil through community involvement a love of forests and an appreciation of their value, and in fact many of them are well suited for regular use as a teaching resource of this nature. It was expected that this use will increase as courses embracing various aspects of environmental science are developed. Many school plantations have been planted to radiata pine, and revenue from the sale of produce used to provide amenities required by the schools. In some cases, however, these plantations have not been very successful in providing revenue, as the sites are unsuitable for economic growth or the plantations are too small or the location too far from processing centres to allow economic harvesting. In some instances, radiata pine plantations have failed due to poor management. In 1982 the Land Conservation Council believed that all the existing plantations should be assessed in order to establish their value as a teaching resource. Those not needed or that are unsuitable for teaching purposes for some reason, such as their location, should be terminated. Those planted to radiata pine that have limited value as a teaching resource although satisfactory for wood production may continue to be used for such production, but should be reviewed when the pines are harvested. From tarnagulla.org by David Gordon: "The plantation is bounded by King, Gladstone and Welsh Streets and on the east by the drainage channel. It was planted up and opened in June 1925. It is located on the massive sand heap of R.W.Hammond's quartz crushing battery, and the plantation served to enhance the appearance of a large-scale mining precinct which was by 1925 seen as an eyesore from the bygone mining days". In 1949 the Commonwealth Forestry and Timber Bureau proposed a national planting program to make Australia more self-reliant in timber products after the shortages experienced during the war. The threat of introduced sirex woodwasp from Europe in the early 1950s and its eventual discovery on the Australian mainland in 1961 brought the softwood plantation program into question. However, quarantine and control measures using tree destruction and a nematode parasite was put in place.Sirex noctilio was a serious threat to softwood plantations in AustraliaSirex wood wasps encased in resinplantations, forests commission victoria (fcv)

This photograph may depict Theodore Harcourt Herbert “Theo” Gray (1898-1979), a member of the Gray family. Theo was born in Seville, Victoria on December 21st, 1898 to the Gray family - a family with some local prominence in Wandin and Seville. Theo lived much of his life in the area - though his three years in the New South Wales Volunteer Defence Corps during WW2 indicate he might have spent time interstate - and died in Gembrook on June 12th, 1979. While clearly on a pine plantation, it is unclear exactly where and when the photograph was taken, though given Theo's residence nearby it may have been on the Nobelius property. Theo is too unclear in the photograph to determine his age; we estimate this photograph was most likely taken between the 1920s and 1940s, but this is only an estimation. This photograph captures the economically and historically significant forestry industry of the region in the early 20th century. Forestry, among other industries, changed the local landscape and brought economic opportunities to the region. This photograph shows some of the scale of that industry. This is a small black and white photograph on yellowing white, glossy paper with a black backing. The backing is damaged in places, with sections missing revealing the white paper behind it. The reverse has several pencil inscriptions, while on the front is one written in pen. There is a small margin of approximately 5mm between the photograph and the edge of the item. The photograph's foreground is filled with felled logs, entirely covering the ground. In the background, a man stands on the logs, with forest behind him. The scene appears to take place on a hill, sloping down to the right. There are some creases in the corners of the photograph, and some artefacts of photography obscure the image.Front: Above Photograph, Pen: "No idea where!"
