Invasion places an imaginative eye in Australian colonial history and turns around the dominant view, taking alien creatures into iconic London-based cityscapes, with white urban residents their victims. Cook's images express the shock that enveloped the Australian continent when European people appeared on Aboriginal shores. Aboriginals as aliens, sci-fi scaled animals - featherless birds, super sized grubs, giant lizards, possums on ufo's, laser shooting fembots, and clouds of rainbow lorikeets - arrive into urban London, the 'mother' country, and wreak havoc. Within the broad narrative are mini narratives that speak to the past, historical references that tease out and reverse the racist practices imposed on Aboriginals. A washboard is designed for hand washing clothing soaked in hot, soapy water in a wash tub or sink. The fabric is squeezed and rubbed against the ridged surface of the washboard to force the cleaning fluid through the cloth to carry away dirt. With the invention of mechanised cleaning, which became more common with washing machines by the end of the 20th century, the washboard became redundant. The traditional washboard is constructed with a rectangular wooden frame around a series of ridges or corrugations; for 19th-century washboards, the ridges were often of wood, sometimes glass, and by the 20th century, ridges of metal became common. In 1833, Stephen Rust obtained a United States patent for the first "fluted" metal washboard. Zinc washboards were predominantly manufactured in the United States from the middle of the 19th century.The washboard is a significant item used for cleaning clothes. For the First Peoples of south-eastern Australia, making possum skin cloaks has long been a culturally important practice. But during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, possums and other native animals were also heavily hunted by white colonists who coveted their warm and fashionable furs. My name is Tammy Gilson and I am a descendant of Wadawurrung people on Mums side, Marlene Gilson and my dear Nan, Rita Fagan from the Dalton line of our apical ancestor, John Robinson. For that I pay my respects and acknowledge my ancestors and all Elders. In Wadawurrung wurru, meaning language, the wurru name of a cloak walert walert signifies the reclaiming of language that hasn’t been spoken fluently since colonisation. Wadawurrung kinkinbil people relied on possum fur to create cloaks to wear for warmth, ceremony, adornments and medicine. Possum fur was used widely amongst neighbouring First Peoples particularly from colder parts of Victoria given the harshness of climate and particularly in Gordon where the elevation is 650m above sea level. The walert walert denotes a continuum of cultural practice and identity, can be viewed as secret and sacred and today viewed as contemporised practice of history acknowledging transfer of knowledge, practice and kinship. My experience of possum skin cloak revival was in 2014 through Traditional Ceremony, Tanderrum, where I was chosen to make several cloaks to be worn by the Elders including my Mum. This is where I learnt technique and design elements that remain present and relevant to lived experience. My work is an example of how culture and connection gives purpose and embeds a beautiful sense of belonging. Each design panel holds a visual voice, a narrative that speaks to identity and kinship. Symbols and line work are found on old artefacts that indicate belonging to Wadawurrung people. The water marks and mountain patterns were passed on to me from Mum and her grandma. Continuing this practice is for future generations as the walert walert holds significant healing properties. Making them and sharing knowledge aims to strengthen our Culture and bring family together. There is nothing like a good yarn while sewing or weaving and this is what the Elders do, and my ancestors always did together, sitting around sharing their way and teaching. Glass washboards were popular during World War II due to a shortage of metal. The body was made of wood, but the scrubbing area was glass. Washboards were normally two-sided with one side having more refined ridges and also came in a variety of sizes. The smaller washboards were used for delicates such as undergarments and petticoats, while larger washboards were used for such items of clothing as shirts and pants. They were used over the laundry tubs. (ref. John Gartner was a fine printer and publisher, an author, a noted philatelist, and also collector of Australian banknotes and coins. He was born on 16 July 1914 and was largely self-educated, leaving school at fourteen for work following the death of his father. Gartner developed a strong interest in the history of typography and printing and was apprenticed at the Advocate where his father had been a linotype operator. Aged 17, Gartner bought a hand press and some fonts of type, and in 1937 acquired a platen press from which he set and printed his private press books, published under the imprint of The Hawthorn Press. Gartner had a strong collection of Australian bookplates. He also looked at the work of artists overseas and commissioned personal plates. He subsequently built an international collection with preference for artists who printed from wood.
