W. H. Tilley were manufacturing pressure lamps at their works in Stoke Newington in 1818, and Shoreditch, in the 1830s. The company moved to Brent Street in Hendon in 1915 during World War I, and started to work with paraffin (kerosene) as a fuel for the lamps. During World War I Tilley lamps were used by the British armed forces, and became so popular that Tilley became used as a generic name for a kerosene lamp in many parts of the world, in much the same way as Hoover is used for vacuum cleaners. During the 1920s the company had diversified into domestic lamps, and had expanded rapidly after orders from railway companies. After World War II fears about the poisonous effect of paraffin fumes, and widely available electricity, reduced demand for domestic use. The company moved from Hendon to Ireland in the early 1960s, finally settling in Belfast. It moved back to England in 2000.Item is significant as it was an early form of portable heating used in a domestic situation or any small room that required to be heated. The concept behind the hand warmer is that through combustion (ignition) of lighter fluid (light petrol distillate) it becomes a catalytic heater, relying on a catalysed chemical reaction to break down molecules and create heat. The devices could get quite hot, not hot enough to set paper on fire, but hot enough to give a nasty burn if sustained contact against your skin occurred. The construction of the device is very simple. There is very fine rolled wire mesh which fits on top of the reservoir body. After you fill the reservoir with lighter fluid, vapor pressure builds up. The device ignites by heating the grill with a match or lighter until it glows red. There is no open flame. The hand warmer also had a velvet bag to place it in after igniting to prevent direct skin contact. They were able to generate heat for up to a whole day. The Japanese company Yamato Shokai Ltd was founded in 1923 in the city of Osaka. Destroyed during air raids in 1945, the factory was rebuilt in 1946. They manufactured the Peacock brand pocket-warmer and sold it internationally.These items are significant because they were commonly used at Falls Creek.The pocket warmer is a small, relatively flat device with a tank at the bottom and a burner mechanism a t the top. "PEACOCK/MADE IN JAPAN" is engraved near the burner. The warmer fits into a metal case which features a series of ventilation holes in the shape of a peacock's tail. Drawing heavily on oral history interviews, it describes how the family's experiences reflected the broader social and economic development of Bendigo, from the goldfields to the Depression era. Historical photographs of family members, homes and possessions accompany the narrative. The story begins around 1860, when John William Taylor emigrated from England and walked from Melbourne to Bendigo carrying his belongings. Attracted by the gold rush, he acquired a miner's right and built a timber home on Specimen Hill near Chum Street. Although he initially pursued gold, he later secured work as a pattern maker in one of Bendigo's foundries before becoming a house builder as mining declined. He married Susanna Johnson, and together they raised nine children, establishing a family whose descendants remained closely connected with Bendigo for generations. The narrative then focuses on Henry Johnson Taylor, the youngest son, and his wife Elva May Hartin, whose son Howard Johnson Taylor was born on 9 September 1912 in a weatherboard house on Specimen Hill. Howard's early childhood was marked by tragedy when his mother died in childbirth while expecting another child. The account reflects on the limitations of rural medical care at the time, suggesting that faster transport may have saved her life. Following her death, the family moved to Golden Square, and Henry later remarried May Whitcombe, who became Howard's stepmother. Howard's childhood provides an insight into everyday life in early twentieth-century Bendigo. The family experienced the influenza epidemic that followed the First World War, although Henry survived despite lasting health effects. Howard recalled living in several homes built or renovated by his father, including properties in Panton Street and later Echuca Street, Quarry Hill. The document describes domestic life in detail, including wood-fired bath heaters, heating and cooking with timber, and the pride taken in maintaining weatherboard houses.
