... To Henry Beardmore from William Hughes, Prime Minister...To Henry Beardmore from William Hughes, Prime Minister...A typed letter sent to Mr Henry Beardmore by W. M. Hughes, Prime Minister 25th April 1917. It is printed on the Commonwealth of Australia letterhead. ...To Henry Beardmore from William Hughes, Prime Minister Letter To Henry Beardmore from William Hughes, Prime Minister ...Henry Beardmore represented the Green Hills Riding on Wodonga Shire Council from 1898 to 1922, including terms as President from 1900-01, 1903-4, 1908-10, 1911-12, 1914-17. He won the seat of Benambra in the Victorian Legislative Assembly at a by-election on 20th April 1917. After a few years serving simultaneously at both local and State government levels, in 1922 Mr Beardmore retired from the Wodonga Council due to his increased workload in State politics. He continuously represented the Benambra electorate as a Nationalist and United Australia Party Member for more than 15 years being returned unopposed on four occasions. Mr Beardmore was a strong advocate for country development and decentralisation. He was an Honorary Minister in 1924 and for a short time in 1929, Minister of Railways, Minister in-charge of Electrical Undertakings and Minister of Labour. He was a leading supporter of Kiewa Hydro-Electric Project and opponent of Yallourn coalfield. He remained as the Member for Benambra until his death in Wodonga on 1st August 1932. At the time this letter was written, William Hughes had been expelled from the ALP over his stance on conscription. He formed the National Labor Party which later merged with the Liberal Party to become the Nationalist Party. Henry Beardmore was a newly-elected Member of the Victorian Parliament and became a member of the Nationalist Party. Two of Henry Beardmore’s sons were on Active Service at the time and were later joined by another of their brothers. The letter aimed to gain support for Hughes at the Federal Election to be held on 5th May 1917 which his new party won with a large majority. However the Second Referendum held on conscription on 20th December 1917 at William Hughes’ instigation was defeated. This letter is significant because it was sent to an important Wodonga politician by the Prime Minister at a critical time in Australia's history.A typed letter sent to Mr Henry Beardmore by W. "PRODUCE AND POPULATE OR PERISH”. ...The Furphy Water Cart, made in Shepparton is an iconic part of Australian manufacturing history. Troops gathered around these sturdy carts during WW1 to have a drink of water, to swap stories, and embellish them a bit along the way. This led eventually to the term 'furphy' entering the Australian vernacular, meaning a rumour, gossip or fake news. Many people have probably heard ... “GOOD, BETTER, BEST - NEVER LET IT REST - TILL YOUR GOOD IS BETTER - AND YOUR BETTER, BEST." But the random squiggles across the centre of a Furphy water tank are not Arabic writing as many believe but Pitman Shorthand that translates as … “WATER IS THE GIFT OF GOD, BUT BEER AND WHISKY ARE CONCOCTIONS OF THE DEVIL, COME AND HAVE A DRINK OF WATER”. Several versions evolved over the decades and this 1942 cart also has an illustration of a stork holding a baby with more squiggles underneath, also in shorthand, which is a quote often first attributed to the WW1 Prime Minister Billy Hughes ... The posters were found in the storeroom under the white sale room in the late 1970s, when the Melbourne Woolbrokers Association moved around the corner to 530 Little Collins Street. The first poster is dated 21st of September 1914. It predates the second poster which replaced it on the 4th of December 1914. The posters detail that the Auctioneer will accept any bid from German or Austrian buyers on the condition that the buyer is not acting on behalf of any country which is at war with Great Britain. The Auctioneer also reserves the right to cancel any purchases found to be in violation of this condition. Presumably, the posters were in use until 1916, when Australia's 7th Prime Minister, Billy Hughes, negotiated the sale of Australia's entire wool clip to the British Government for the remainder of The Great War. The British government agreed to buy Australia’s entire wool production in 1916 at 55% above market price. In the end, £160,000,000 British pounds was paid by the UK Government to Australia for the nation’s entire wool clip between 1916‑1920. This would be equivalent to £7,619,760,000 in 2022 money when accounting for inflation, or $13,239,000,000 AUD.Two posters on yellowed card. The first poster is printed in black text with a title of “NOTICE”. The second poster is printed in red text with the same title, “NOTICE”. Both posters have 4 body paragraphs of text, detailing restraints put on potential wool buyers because of war with Germany in the Great War. Both Posters are finished with a date in the bottom left corner.the great war, world war one, melbourne wool exchange, melbourne wool brokers association, wool sales, 1910s -

There is an article on page 2 of the Vol 13, June 1979 edition of RAAV's News Review titled, "R.A.A.V. to open our own opportunity shop". Written by Vice President, Elva Renfrew, members and friends of RAAV are invited to donate goods and join a roster of volunteers who will staff the op shop once it opens. A second article appears on page 3 of the following issue of News Review, Vol 15, December 1979. Titled, "HERE'S OUR SHOP", it dates the opening of the Malvern Op Shop as being Monday, the 8th of October, 1979. A similar photo to this one accompanies that article, with a Christmas tree visible in the front display window of the shop. The article states that the opening of the shop was "launched by the Lady Mayor of Malvern, Counsellor [sic] Morrow, who presented us with a cheque." The newsagency on one side of the opportunity shop displays advertisements for 'The Sun' and 'The Age' newspapers. Two bill posters inside wire cages advertise the latest newspaper headlines. One contains the headline, "LIBS DEFY FRASER", referring to the Liberal Party and their leader, the Prime Minister at the time, Malcolm Fraser. The other headline is, "THE LIFE OF BILLY HUGHES". This headline most likely refers to the 2nd volume of a biography on the life of Australia's 7th Prime Minister, William Morris Hughes, by L. F. On the window glass, the words "OPPORTUNITY SHOP" are painted in blue, in a tapered design. At the top of the window, there is a sign containing the text, "THE AGE". Two bill posters inside wire cages are affixed to the wall. One says, "The AGE", "LIBS DEFY FRASER".
