Taken in 1990, this photograph depicts a row of shops in Beechworth, with the shopfront of watchmaker and jewellers, William Turner and C.F. Falck, in the foreground, and newsagent and bookseller James Ingram's shop in the background. This photograph is of social significance to the Beechworth community in depicting the Street of Shops, the creation of curator, Roy Harvey, which opened in 1979 at Burke Museum. According to the Indigo Shire Council webpage for Burke Museum, this addition 'began a new period of collecting with Roy Harvey calling to the community for donations. The response resulted in an influx of material adding to the town history/ development and local identities collections. The Shops and their contents reflect another period in museology.' The historic shopfronts in this image portray those of local settlers, William Turner and CF Falck's Watchmaker and Jeweller store, and James Ingram's news agency and bookshop. William Turner was originally a goldfields official who became a commissioner on the Ovens goldfield, and later a resident warden, at times performing magisterial duties and chairing the Local Court. Charles Frederick Falck, born in Korlin, Germany, in 1833, a skilled watchmaker and jeweller, ran the jewellery business from 1862. Along with William Turner and Melbourne barrister, George Milner Stephen, he prepared a dazzling display of gems and jewellery from Beechworth for the Royal Society's Exhibition in Melbourne in 1865. This act signposted Beechworth's progress as a nineteenth-century gold rush town with a population of around 3000. In the mid-1850s, newsagent James Ingram established a newsagency and supplied papers and stationary to the goldfields. He and bookseller R.T. Vale stocked a wide range of literary, historical and religious works, textbooks, periodicals and newspapers, as well as hosting a reading and writing room on Camp Street{?}. James Ingram was a 'devoted instigator and supporter of the town's welfare institutions', who raised funds for to establish a hospital, primary school and benevolent asylum, and assisted people who'd fallen on hard times with his wife. He was also a mainstay of the early Baptist church, holding meetings in his house. He died in 1928, six weeks short of his 100th birthday. Ingram's Rock, north-west of Beechworth near where he lived in later life, was named after him. This photograph features three display board sections showing information and photographs from 'The Harvest' exhibition inside the Burke Museum at Beechworth in 1999. The boards are titled 'To the Market' and 'Orchards'; the accompanying text cannot be read. The two accompanying photographs depict a man and woman picking fruit. This photograph is of social significance to Burke Museum and the Beechworth community, documenting an exhibition, The Harvest, held in 1999 to communicate the importance of agricultural development, specifically of orchards, in the area. The expansion of vineyards and horticulture in the Beechworth district followed gold rush prosperity in the mid-1850s, with nearly ninety acres of gardens and small farms under vineyards by 1865. There were 400 Chinese market gardeners and hawkers in the area in 1868. The growth of agriculture in the Ovens district in the mid -1860s led to advocacy by local farmers for the extension of railway infrastructure from Melbourne to improve access to distant markets.Colour rectangular photograph printed on matte AGFA photographic paper.Obverse: TO THE MARKET / ORCHARDS/ Reverse: 2856beechworth, burke museum, promoting settlement, living in country towns, making regional centres, preserving traditions and commemorating, farming and agriculture, orchards, exhibitions, burke museum exhibitions, fruitpicking, building local economies, transforming land, victorian agricultural history, marketing and promoting agricultural products, growing fruit and vegetables, the harvest exhibition, harvests, vineyards, victorian gold rush towns

This photograph was taken in 1999 at 'The Harvest' exhibition at the Burke Museum for members of Baking Industry Victoria. The grain mill, manufactured by B.M. Purshouse in Wolverhampton, England, was of special interest. This photograph is of primary social significance to the Beechworth community because it depicts a 19th-century grain mill, manufactured by B.M. Purshouse in Wolverhampton, England, which was probably used at flour mills in the Ovens District, such as that at Tarrawingee, which opened in 1866. The purchase of agricultural machinery such as the grain mill accompanied the expansion of agriculture, including grain growing, in the Ovens District following the gold mining prosperity of the 1850s. When used as a medical dressing, woven gauze is usually made of cotton. It is especially useful for dressing wounds where other fabrics might stick to the burn or laceration. Many modern medical gauzes are covered with a perforated plastic film such as Telfa or a polyblend which prevents direct contact and further minimizes wound adhesion. Also, it can be impregnated with a thick, creamy mixture of zinc oxide and calamine to promote healing, as in Unna's boot. (An Unna’s boot is a special gauze (usually 4 inches wide and 10 yards long) bandage, which can be used for the treatment of venous stasis ulcers and other venous insufficiencies of the leg. It can also be used as a supportive bandage for sprains and strains of the foot, ankle and lower leg. The gauze is impregnated with a thick, creamy mixture of zinc oxide and calamine to promote healing. It may also contain acacia, glycerin, castor oil and white petrolatum.) Gauze is also used during procedures involving accidental tooth loss; either the gauze is used to provide pressure as the tooth is moved back into its corresponding socket, or the tooth is wrapped in gauze and placed in milk or saline to keep it alive while the tooth is being transported or prepared for reinsertion. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GauzeAccess to emergency medical help in early settlement days of Victoria could take quite some time, especially in remote areas. This Copy of Deed of Settlement of the Bank of Australia originated from the Bank of Australasia. The bank of Australasia was incorporated by Royal Charter of England in March 1834. It had its Australian beginning on 14th December 1835, opening in Sydney. The Acting Superintendent of the bank at that time was David Charters McArthur. He was Superintendent from 1867-to 1876. The Melbourne branch opened on 28th August 1838 in a two-roomed brick cottage on the north side of Little Collins Street, where two huge mastiff dogs were used at night to guard the bank. The government also provided an armed military sentinel. Due to the bank's rapid growth, a new building for the Melbourne branch was opened in 1840 at 75 Collins Street West. By 1879 the bank had been upgraded to a magnificent two-storey building on the corners of Collins and Queens Streets, with the entry on Collins Street. In 1951 the Bank of Australasia amalgamated with the Union Bank to form the Australia and New Zealand Bank, now known as the ANZ. Then in 1970, the ANZ merged with both the ES&A and the London Bank of Australia to form the ANZ Banking Group Limited. The ANZ Banking Group Ltd kindly donated a variety of historic items from the Bank of Australasia. BANK of AUSTRALASIA, WARRNAMBOOL – In 1854 Warrnambool had two banks, the Union Bank and the Bank of Australasia. Later, completely different bank businesses opened; in 1867 the National Bank of Australasia, then in 1875 the Colonial Bank of Australasia. The original Warrnambool branch of the Bank of Australasia was established in July 1854, and operated from a leased cottage on Merri Street, close to Liebig Street. The bank next bought a stone building previously erected by drapers Cramond & Dickson on the corner of Timor and Gibson Streets. Samuel Hannaford was a teller and then Manager at the Warrnambool branch from 1855 to 1856 and the Warrnambool Council chose that bank for its dealings during 1856-57. In 1859 Roberts & Co. was awarded the contract to build the new Bank of Australasia branch for the sum of £3,000; the firm built the Warrnambool Post Office in 1856 and purchased land in Timor Street in 1858. The land was on a sand hill on the northeast corner of Timor and Kepler Streets and had been bought in 1855 from investor James Cust. The new building opened on May 21, 1860. The bank continued to operate there until 1951 when it merged with the Union Bank to form the ANZ Bank, which continued operating from its Liebig Street building. Warrnambool City Council purchased the former Bank of Australasia building in 1971 and renovated it, then on 3rd December 1973 it was officially opened as the Art Gallery by Cr. Harold Stephenson and Gallery Director John Welsh. The Gallery transferred to the purpose-built building in Liebig Street in 1986 and the old bank building is now the Gallery club. Staff at the Bank of Australasia in Warrnambool included the following men but others were also involved: Samuel Hannaford, Teller then Manager from 1855-1856; Hawkins, Manager in 1856, W H Palmer, Manager from January 1857 until November 1869 when the Teller Basil Spence was promoted to Manager; H B Chomley, Manager from April 1873 and still there in 1886; A Butt, Manager in 1895-1904; J R McCleary Accountant and Acting Manager for 12 months, until 1900; A Kirk, Manager 1904; J Moore, staff until his transfer to Bendigo in December 1908; J S Bath was Manager until 1915; C C Cox, Manager until April 1923; Richard C Stanley, Manager 1923 to April 1928. The Copy of Deed of Settlement of the Bank of Australasia has significance through its association with the Bank of Australasia. The early Australian bank was established in 1834 by Royal Charter and opened in Sydney, Australia, in Sydney in 1835. The bank had many Australian offices in November 1877, particularly on the east and south coasts. Victoria had 45 per cent of all Offices. The Deed of Settlement is locally significant for its association with the Warrnambool Bank of Australasia, which was established in 1854. It was Warrnambool Council’s first bank. The bank continued to operate until the organisation's merger in 1951 when it became the ANZ Bank Group today. The Bank was an integral part of the growth of local commerce and the community. White metal medal issued to commemorate Melbourne’s centenary 1934-35. This medal was given out to Victorian school children; 325,600 white metal medals were struck. The medal references Portland, the location of Victoria’s first settlement. The Henty brothers, entrepreneur farmers and whalers, established the state’s first permanent European settlement in Portland in 1834. Melbourne was established the following year by a party of settlers led by John Batman. In 1934, as Melbourne planned to celebrate the centenary of European settlement, it seemed to some that there was little to celebrate. The financial strains of the depression, unemployment and the scandal of the city’s slums all undercut claims of unbridled progress. Perhaps because of such troubles, the organisers of the centenary celebrations tried doubly hard to be positive. The themes of the celebrations were conservative, reflecting the desire of some Melburnians for security in troubled times. The widely promoted image of the ‘Garden City’ and ‘Queen City of the South’ emphasised the idea of Melbourne as a very British city. Perhaps because of such troubles, the organisers of the centenary celebrations tried doubly hard to be positive. The themes of the celebrations were conservative, reflecting the desire of some Melburnians for security in troubled times. The widely promoted image of the 'Garden City' and 'Queen City of the South' emphasised the idea of Melbourne as a very British city. A visit by the Duke of Gloucester, son of George V, the ageing king, provided a reassuring strengthening of Melbourne's imperial connections. The presented view of Melbourne's history stressed the 'myth of the pioneer', embodied in the person of John Batman. Elevated to heroic status, he was reinvented as a courageous pioneer whose life exemplified the rewards of self-improvement. Such a portrayal ignored Batman's dubious 'treaty' with local Aborigines and the less savoury details of his personal life. Melbourne's indigenous people were excluded from this triumphant view of Melbourne's past. The centenary celebrations now seem dated, but the image of Melbourne as a conservative city largely influenced by Britain has been more enduring.Details the settlement of Portland, Melbourne and Victoria, 1834 - 1935Double sided round white metal medal, featuring on front face, the bay of Portland showing a ship in the harbour. Digitised video (3.68GB). Duration: 62 minutes. Recorded March, 2025 (Video is available for viewing at Ringwood & District Historical Society Archives by appointment)The Parish of Mooroolbark was surveyed in 1855, with a township originally called Brushy Creek standing where North Croydon is today. The name "Mooroolbark" was to be popularised with eventual European settlement in the late 19thy century. A rural hub developed around the train station, which opened in 1887 and offered rail access to Melbourne, with the Post Office opened shortly after in 1888. In this video presentation, Marion Stott, OAM, President and Founding Member of the Mooroolbark History Group, provides "Then and Now" details of all this and more. As well as activities in promoting local history, Marion is actively involved in local RSL, Traders group, and community events including Mooroolbark Red Earth Festival. For services to the community of Mooroolbark, Marion was awarded an OAM in 2020.

Edward Gadd’s coach building and blacksmith shop was on the western side of Main Road, just south of Arthur Street and alongside Hannah Lloyd’s Railway General Store. The site was later home to the Eltham Produce Store, then a BP Petrol Station and in present-day home to Healthability at 911-917 Main Road. https://maps.app.goo.gl/az9GzxmVYFRGgYa39 Note with photo: "Man with hammer is Mr Gadd; always wore leggings and played violin at local dances. Note the school children; one of whom may be Jock Read. In April 1922, E.Gadd took over the West Bros. blacksmithing business at Eltham. He had many prior years’ experiences with horses and their ailments, such as diseased feet and bad breath. He advertised that he kept horse medicines in stock and was prepared to undertake clipping. This would suggest the shed would be visible in the November 1931 aerial photograph. Looking past the shed to the left the topography is relatively flat. The most probable location for the blacksmith shop, being a coach builder, would be near or on the main road. The only area in Eltham relative to other businesses that has a flattish topography with hills in the distant is around the railway station. E. Gadd’s Blacksmith shop was situated on the western side of Main Road, between Arthur and Dudley Streets and does appear to be visible in the 1931 aerial photo held by the Society. A map drawn up by Doug Orford of businesses and homes along Main Road in the 1930s shows the Gadd blacksmith shop in this precise location, just south of Staff’s general store. (See EDHS_05122). Other photos show the blacksmith shop adjacent to the Railway store and it had “Electrine Candles” advertising painted on the roof facing the southern approach along Main Road (SEPP_0611) and is just visible to the left of Lloyd’s Store c.1916-c.1922 (EDHS_02160). This document highlights the historical and community significance of swimming pools in Bendigo, focusing on personal stories, community efforts, and social change: Items belonging to Olympic champion Faith Leech, such as her dressing gown and Olympic torch, are displayed to honor her achievements and inspire others. Family members and local historians emphasize the determination and impact of local swimming figures. The push for modern, Olympic-size pools in Bendigo was inspired by the 1956 Olympic Games. While government grants supported pool construction, significant fundraising was done by local residents, who contributed £17,500—a major portion of the total cost. Fundraising was competitive, with community members recognized for their efforts (e.g., being crowned "Queen of the Pool"). Early advocacy for pools began in the 1880s, with Golden Square residents lobbying for their own facility. Golden Square's pool, opened in 1918, was the first in Bendigo to allow mixed-gender swimming. The Bendigo Municipal Pool only permitted mixed bathing after its late 1950s reopening, reflecting broader social changes. Even into the 1920s, women had to request dedicated swimming times for instruction. Learning to swim was vital for safety, especially due to the risk of drowning in mining dams during early settlement. Local newspapers published swimming instructions, and community members shared stories about learning to swim. The document promotes an exhibition and encourages visitors to record their own pool-related memories, which will be shared at a community event called 'Stories from the Pool.'Article from the Bendigo Advertiser - Swimming pools in Bendigo Sat Nov 26 2017 Pictures Mark Kearney This item contains the following documents: 3486.53a Kay MacGregor and Vivien Newton hold the original petition from the Golden Square residents 3486.53b Faith Leech's dressing gown is among other belongings from the Olympic champion to go on show 3486.53c Article on swimming pools in Bendigo from the Advertiserbendigo, swimming pools in bendigo

Jacana Primary School, founded in 1959 amid the rapid suburban expansion of Melbourne’s northern corridor, emerged during a time of significant public investment in education and infrastructure. Located near Broadmeadows, the school served a growing population of working-class families, many of whom were newly arrived migrants. This diverse community shaped the school’s inclusive and multicultural character. By the early 1980s, Jacana Primary had become more than just a place of learning—it was a central hub for community life. Team sports, particularly football, played a vital role in the daily rhythm of the school. Football’s growing popularity, especially among migrant communities, made it a natural fit for fostering teamwork, physical fitness, and social connection among students. The 1983 football team photograph captures this vibrant period in the school’s history. It reflects the importance of extracurricular activities in promoting school spirit, cultural exchange, and community engagement. The image also embodies the values of public education at the time: equity, participation, and the celebration of diversity. As part of Jacana Primary’s visual archive, it stands as a lasting record of how schools helped shape local identity and cohesion during a transformative era in Melbourne’s suburban development. This photograph of Jacana Primary School’s 1983 football team is a significant historical record that reflects the social and cultural dynamics of Melbourne’s northern suburbs during a period of rapid suburban growth and demographic change. Taken at a time when schools were central to community life, the image captures the role of sport, particularly football, fostering inclusion, teamwork, and school pride. The photograph is especially meaningful within the context of Jacana’s diverse student population, shaped by post-war migration and working-class settlement. Soccer, a sport embraced by many migrant communities, served as a unifying activity that transcended language and cultural barriers. It provided students with a sense of belonging and identity, while also promoting physical health and social development. As part of Jacana Primary School’s visual archive, this image contributes to a broader understanding of how public education supported multicultural integration and community cohesion in late 20th-century Victoria. These photographs feature owner for the various shops located at the St. East Shopping Centre, Main Road East Corner McArthur Avenue, St. Albans. The Sunshine Advocate’s feature on local traders was a modest yet well‑liked column that played a meaningful role in strengthening community identity. Strip shopping centres hold heritage value as essential components of suburban development from the mid‑20th century onward. They supported migrant settlement, local entrepreneurship, and neighbourhood cohesion, offering affordable retail spaces for family‑run businesses. Their role as informal social hubs fostered community interaction, cultural visibility, and walkable neighbourhoods.
