Between 1992 and 1998 Snuff Puppets was housed on the third floor directly above the Melbourne Museum of Printing at the old Bradmill Cotton Mills building on Moreland St in Footscray. Museum proprietor Michael Isaacsen was keen to share his resources and gave Snuff Puppets carte blanche to use his Museum. Nearly all the promotional posters and materials from this time were printed in limited edition runs at the Museum using scrounged paper, odds and ends of ink, lead type, wooden type, lino cuts and an old press. Civilian internee Irmhild Beinssen wrote three puppet plays for the children of Camp 3A, Tatura. Her sister, Gisela von Koch, wrote the music and helped with costumes. Beinssen, her husband Ekkehard and her sister voiced and operated the puppets. Alfons Konig carved the puppets' heads from box wood and Italian artist Cesare Vagarini pained the backdrops. the play were dark, in the style of traditional Germain fairy-tails and heartily enjoyed by Beinssen's own children, Silke, Uwe and Peter.Carved wooden puppet head of man with tanned skin, brown eyes and black moustache. Long brown hair parted in centre tucked behind his ears. Felt light brown hand raised in the air. He is wearing a full length sewn burgandy gown with a leather belt around the waist. This drawing was done by Andy Freer, founding member and Artistic Director of Snuff Puppets. It forms part of the creative process to develop a new show, 'Forest in the Night', exploring themes of evolution, chaos theory, Darwinism and the survival of the fittest. More than 25 puppets were created and transformed into new strange creatures. This drawing was submitted as part of a pitch to the 1995 Melbourne International Festival of the Arts program, where it was performed as a large outdoor spectacle in the round. David Lancashire's Christmas promotion 'Hallelujah', designed for KW Doggett Fine Paper in 2009, is an example of one of the many innovations that Lancashire has contributed to the Australian paper industry. Considering the celestial aspects of Christmas and a favourite song - Leonard Cohen's 'Hallelujah' - Lancashire recalled a Wayang Kulit shadow puppet collected in Bali because of the way it interacted with light. Made from hide, the puppet was peppered with hand-punched holes to add intricate decorations to projected shadows. He adapted this concept to laser-etched paper and translated the fringed skirt of the puppet to die cut angel feathers.
