It was built and operated by Bill and Ethel Elkington about 1947. The building is in Art Deco style with an awning, verandah and rendered brick parapet behind which was a pitched roof. The shop front originally featured black tile surrounds which have since been removed. The Ice Cream Cone at the front of the building was unfortunately stolen. Apart from a brief period in the early 2000s, the premises has operated as a corner store or café continuously since it was built. Harold and his mother Emily Harris nee Farrell owned Killara Station. He had served at Lone Pine during World War 1 so named the area in honour of that field of battle. Bill Hart added a lubritorium or service station in the late 1950s. It was then also a general store and sub agency for Bank of NSW and also served as a post office. Mrs Hart also operated a small telephone exchange. In 1974 it was for put up for sale for $39,000 plus SAV. It was eventually acquired by Albury Wodonga Development Corporation in about1980. A bid to retain the name Lone Pine as a locality failed. These images are significant because they capture a building which served the community in the Wodonga area and has since been demolished. Two black and white images of the Lone Pine Store and Service Station at Killara.Lone Pine Store and advertising postershistoric sites wodonga, lone pine killara -

It was known as The Corner Store. The owners in chronological order were Le Juge, Jones, Stewart, Elwood, Searles and Russo. This invoice donated by the daughter of its recipient is dated 28 November 1974 at a time when Searles were the proprietors. It shows the customer was allowed to carry a small debt. The donor recalled that a number of Emerald people, including her parents, were not well off and were allowed to do this by the store. The invoice also has a list of items for sale at that time. This 1970's Emerald general store invoice invites some interesting comparisons with present-day supermarkets in relation to what they stock and how they relate to customers. M. Anderson's store on the corner of what is now Kilvington Drive and Heroes Avenue. At the time, these may have respectively been Beaconsfield Road and, according to the label, Avenue of Honor. Anderson's store is believed to have been built by the Stillwell family in 1921, but Anderson had his store at least from 1923 and therefore likely owned it from the point of its first construction. By the late 1940s, Anderson's had become Legge's General Store. It is difficult to determine precisely when within that range this photograph was taken, although one local history page attributes it to the earlier end of the range. We believe Anderson's store was on the corner now occupied by Grace and Louie Booksellers. This photograph captures a now-unfamiliar store in a familiar part of old Emerald, documenting the changes to the commercial landscape over the past century. This black and white photograph is attached to a card backing. The backing is annotated in pen below the photograph, describing its location. Other pencil annotation is present on the obverse and reverse of the backing. The photograph shows a store on the street corner, with a porch shading the walkway in front of the building and other shops along the street. On the corner closer top the camera and across from the store is a lamp post, with another shop besides it. On the photograph paper itself is another annotation, this one printed.
