Sandra JOHNSTONE (1936-Jan 1991) Born Southern California, USA Worked California, USA Sandra Johnstone was awarded a MA in Ceramics and an MFA in Plastic Arts at San Jose State University, where she later also lectured. Specialiing in functional and sculptural forms, with emphasis on wheel-thrown shapes and salt-glazed stoneware and porcelain, her work is best known for salt glazing, using surface texture and colour to enhance the character of the clay. Sandra JOHNSTONE (1936-01/1991) Worked California, USA Sandra Johnstone undertook graduate study at the University of California, Berkeley, California. From 1957 she worked as a studio potter. Between 1983 and 1990 she was a teacher at Napa Valley College, Napa, California. She is known for her large wheel thrown stoneware pots, often deeply incised both on interior and exterior surfaces. From Victorian Heritage: The single storey mansion house with enclosed glass verandah, Burswood was built in 1853 on a site overlooking the Portland Bay for English born pioneer colonist Edward Henty. John Barrow of Adelaide was the architect for this exceptional Australian regency style residence which he designed as a central block of fine axed basalt ashlar and slate roof (now replaced) with flanking brick wings forming an enclosed rear courtyard. Burswood is the most important early mansion house in western Victoria, being an exceptional Australian regency design by distinguished colonial architect James Barrow. Edward Henty, a member of one of Australia's most remarkable colonial families and the founder of Portland, established the first permanent settlement in Victoria on 19th November 1834, and Burswood is testimony to his success as an early colonist. Henty lived in his mansion for 17 years in a semi-regal state. Burswood has been little altered since completion in 1853. A glasshouse conservatory to the side of the present enclosed verandah was demolished prior to 1895 and the slate roof replaced with iron. Johnstone, O’Shannessy & Co was a leading photographic studio located in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. It was active from 1865 to 1905. Henry James Johnstone was also an artist and studied at Louis Buvelot's school and with Thomas Clark.Painting of a sandstone coloured building. Letter, Set of two letters, carbon copy, typed by Mr Lewis Russell to Mr. R. A. Spencer while on tour with Mr Bell in 1938. See Reg Item 934 for the report. The two letters give the nitty gritty of the going-on's at the time in the MMTB. .1 - three quarto sheets, stapled in the top left hand corner, dated Monday 2 May, outlining activities at home. The main point is a O'Meara - Eakins appeal which involved extensive legal advice about titles, positions etc. Mr O'Meara title noted as chief draftsman. Notes names of various legal figures such as Mr. Herring KC. Also notes Cr. Gray, Cr. Gorman, Mr. Bell (Jnr?), Mr Cass. Appears that Mr. McGlashan "has been dipping his beak into the flowing bowl" and had been dismissed. Appears he was collecting the fees from the Wattle Park Golf course. Letter continuation of 4 May - appeals still going on, the death of Mr Monsbourgh and dismissal of Mr. Ellis and a 3rd sheet dated 9th May. Reports on drawing up a lease for a Mr. Better, snow and some personal family matters? .2 - letter dated 3/8/1938 Has notes re Mr O'Connor and the benefit society, retiring gratuity, costs, Mr Guice, Mr Richardson. The letter writer G. R. Locke has read Robin Boyd's newspaper articles on early public buildings and homes. This letter tells Boyd about the historic home "Auburn House", 4 Goodall St Hawthorn, established for Robert Hepburn with land purchased in 1856. It also tells of the confusion with neighbouring house "Auburn Lodge". Since Boyd writes on early Melbourne public buildings and homes, the writer is inviting Boyd to view the house. It is not known whether Robin Boyd took up the invitation. In 1960 it was included in the National Trust Register.
