World War II Diary by R.A. Pullin

Jean and Bert Bergwerf bought this cream separator from Gerald Maggs hardware store in Dandenong in 1962, it having previously belonged to a farm in Gippsland. They used it to sell milk to their neighbours and supply milk and cream to the Emerald Fire Brigade. It was manufactured in Dursley, England by R.A. Lister & Co. Ltd. While we know it was bought from the farm in 1962, it is unclear how long it was in use before then. R.A. Lister & Co's Melbourne agency opened in 1893, but this likely isn't quite that old. A similar model held by the Jindera Pioneer Museum and Historical Society Inc. has been dated to c. 1937, and it would be viable for this to be of a similar origin. This item is an example of the tools vital in providing milk and cream to communities through the 20th century. This is a hand-operated bench-mounted ball bearing cream separator consisting of a red-painted stand with a crank, a large drum for spinning, with an output pipe and a small output catchment drum.Embossed Label: "MADE BY / R.A. LISTER & CO. LTD / AT DURSLEY ENGLAND / Lister / VICTORIAN AGENTS / GIPPSLAND & NORTHERN CO-OP / CO. LTD. MELBOURNE C.I." Painted Label (Mostly Faded): "BALL BEARING / CREAM SEPARATOR" Printed Label (Partly cutoff): "[illegible] EVERY TWO MONTHS. / [illegible] DRUM OVERFLOW MUST NOT / [illegible] USED AGAIN ON SEPARATOR." This list of factories in the City of Sunshine is an extract from a report by K.G. Wilson, L.R. Dryer & R.A. Scaramella, prepared for the Melbourne Western Region Commission (WRC). The Melbourne Western Region Commission was a major inter‑municipal planning and advocacy body operating across Melbourne’s western suburbs in the late 1970s and 1980s. It coordinated planning, heritage studies, and regional development across multiple councils. The Commission brought together a broad sweep of western-region councils City of Altona, City of Essendon, City of Footscray, City of Keilor, City of Sunshine, City of Williamstown, Shire of Bacchus Marsh, Shire of Melton & Shire of Werribee. The Melbourne Western Region Commission was one of the most important institutional predecessors to the region’s later heritage, planning, and community‑development frameworks. This report records the business name, type of industry and address of businesses operating in the City of Sunshine in 1984.Factory Name or Occupier A. Prior to the election of female Councillors and Mayors in the 1960’s, The Lady Mayoress role was one of the few ways women could officially undertake civic duties. Mayoresses made important contributions to their local communities through their charity work and as ambassadors for their region on a state and federal level. They also undertook some Mayoral duties on occasions when their husband was unavailable. Mayoress Rae was born Ethel Mary and during her time in office she attended functions alongside her husband for Queen Elizabeth and the Duke of Edinburgh during their visit in 1963.Framed, oval photographic studio portrait with flat glass. A separator is a centrifugal device that separates milk into cream and skimmed milk. Separation was commonly performed on farms in the past. Most farmers milked a few cows, usually by hand, and separated milk with a hand operated machine for domestic use. The milk was poured into the bowl on the top and the handle had to then be turned fast enough to get the separator up to speed adequate to separate the cream and the milk. The milk would come out of one spigot and the cream out of the other. In general practice some of the skimmed milk was consumed by the family, while the rest may have been used to feed calves and pigs. Enough cream was saved to make butter, and the excess was sold. In many cases excess could be bartered or swapped with neighbours for other items of produce. LISTER - A prominent make of separator which became very popular with the dairy farmer, was the "Lister" separator. The early separators sold by R. A. Lister in the 1880's, were made by "Koefoed & Hauberg", Copenhagen. Denmark, called the "Alexandria". Ashton Lister became the sole agent for Koefoed & Hauberg made separators in England and all the English Colonies, throughout the world. Being an enterprising salesman, Ashton, sent his son Edward on a three-year sales tour of Australia & New Zealand in 1890, (hence the strong presence of Lister in Australia.) Initially, the separator was totally manufactured in Denmark and assembled in Dursley, England. By 1892 Lister were making parts at their Victorian Iron Works, and around about the early 1900's, Lister began manufacturing separators in their own right, severing ties with Koefoed & Hauberg. The Lister firm is still going today, under the name of Lister Petter, England, but do not manufacture separators, as the manufacture of farm / domestic separators ceased in the early 1960's.This item is significant as it is representative of domestic and dairying machinery used throughout rural areas of Australia in the early to mid 20th century. The separator is made in 3 sections. The base is metal plated with blue enamel. The vat is made from silver painted tin. There are 2 outlet spouts. The detachable handle, made from cast iron and wood, is held in place by a screw. A metal plate featuring the manufacturer information is attached to the side of the handle. Model CR 15 hand operated table version. On metal plate attached to handle" Lister/ MADE BY R. A.
