Harold Bertie Chatfield No 401493 enlisted in the RAAF on 28.2.1941 age 20 years. Embarked for for Southern Rhodesia for training with No 26 Flying Elementary Training School. Promoted T/Sgt - Airman Pilot 28.2.42, embark for England for more training 9.4.42, 16.6.43 posted on strength of the RAF, promoted Flt Sgt 19.7.43, posted in Burma with 615 Sqd RAF flying Spitfires 16.10.43, hospital 2.1.44 for 3 months, promoted to Flying Officer 30.12.44, discharged from the Airforce at RAF Station Poona 14.12.45. In 2016/17 a recommendation was put forward for Chatfield to be awarded the DFM (Distinguished Flying Medal) relating to 2 actions in Burma. This was downgraded to a Commendation for Gallantry. On 5.4.43 after a bombing run over Meiktila in central Burma two Blenheim bombers collided with the result that the crews of both planes were either KIA or taken POW. One of a series of four boards of mounted replica medals of the Australian Defence Forces. This board shows medals pertaining to World War 2. Replicas include different campaign stars and the Defence Medal and Active Service Medal. There is a cloth patch embroidered 'H.M.A.S.' and cap band from HMAS Sydney. The Rising Sun badge and badges for Return from Active Service and a RAAF emblem. The text reproduced at the base accompanied the WW1 memorial plaques. David Thomas Andrew No 400247 enlisted in the RAAF on 21.7.40. During a bombing run by No 11 Sqd on Meiktila in central Burma on 5.4.43 two of the Sqd's Blenheim Bombers collided and subsequently crashed. Warrant Officer Andrew was killed.
