Robert Raikes ("the Younger") (14 September 1736 – 5 April 1811) was an English philanthropist and Anglican layman. He was educated at The Crypt School Gloucester. Robert Raikes was an Anglican philanthropist heavily interested in prison reform via education. He was a pioneer of the Sunday School movement. Schools were organised on Sundays as most children worked 6 days a week in factories, mines etc. Initially the Sunday Schools were only for boys. The first Sunday School was established in Melbourne in 1838-39 and in Bendigo in 1855.Bendigo Advertiser '' The way we were'' from 2002.
