Appears to be at Research Hotel. Pages from a scrapbook belonging to Heather Jenkins (nee Cone) who lived as a child in the Police Residence at 728 Main Road, Eltham in the 1910s-1920s. Images featured are 1. A peep on the road, nearing Research. 2. The Main Road at Eltham (opposite Railway Station). 3. A part of the new railway line. 4. This negative is one of a batch of ten images taken apparently around the same time at Gembrook c. early 20th century. This negative is of a muddy unmade road (now Station Rd) running alongside the Railway Station leading towards the Ranges Hotel, with the double-gabled General Store to the right. The hotel was built in 1902, two years after the Ferntree Gully to Gembrook railway was completed. It was an important social institution and tourist destination in Gembrook for over one hundred years until its destruction by fire in 2018. Detailed description on the rear of the photograph in ink, particularly about the bus - one of 30 built by Commonwealth Engineering during 1949/50 for the MMTB. Surplus to needs after the conversion of Bourke St and that the seating reduced from 41 to 37 to facilitate one many operation. McKinnon was a small community in East Brighton settled mainly by market gardeners but it had a State School, Churches, a hotel opened by Thomas Bent's father, Post Office and some shops. After WW1 land close to the railway line began to be sold and new homes and various shops were built. A Progress League was well supported and new hall built. McKinnon Rd Shopping precinct did not prosper as expected and some attribute this to the failure to secure the Hoyts picture theatre c 1925.
