This is a set of seven photographs of Royal Australian Survey Corps surveyors setting up observation towers in the field and undertaking survey observations during mapping and geodetic control operations. c1950s. Survey observation towers were used mainly to take angular measurements in flat or heavily forested terrain, where height was necessary to achieve observer’s line-of-sight between field survey station. The Bilby Tower seen in photo .5P was erected to a height of 75 feet (23m) above ground level. The use of the Bilby Tower in Topographic Squadron’s field survey operations from 1955 to 1966 is described in page 54 of Valerie Lovejoy’s book 'Mapmakers of Fortuna – A history of the Army Survey Regiment’ ISBN: 0-646-42120-4. CAPT George Ricketts’ period of service was from 1942 to 1976 reaching the rank of LTCOL. It is noted in page 35 of Valerie Lovejoy’s book that then SGT Ricketts hand lettering skills came to the fore from his contribution to the draughting of one of the Japan’s Instruments of Surrender in 1945.This is a set of seven photographs of Royal Australian Survey Corps surveyors setting up observation towers in the field and undertaking survey observations during mapping and geodetic control operations. c1950s. The Army School of Survey was formed at Balcombe, Victoria in 1943 but later relocated to Bonegilla near Wodonga. The Australian Survey Corps had a proud history. It was raised as a unit of the Permanent Military Forces on July 1st 1915. Of the three officers and 17 other ranks who constituted the Survey Corps in 1915, all but three enlisted in the AIF and saw service in France, Belgium, Egypt or Palestine. The Corps entered World War 2 with nine officers and forty one other ranks. Its total strength reached a peak of 1,700 personnel with 5,500 men and women being engaged on mapping tasks during the war period. In 1948 the Australian Survey Corps was granted the prefix ‘Royal’ in recognition of its service during World War II. From the 1950s until its disbandment in 1996, members of the Corps undertook extensive geodetic surveys and mapping operations in all mainland states of Australia as part of the National Mapping Program as well as in Papua New Guinea. This included important work with the establishment of the Snowy River Hydro Scheme and the Woomera rocket range, The School of Military Survey moved to Bonegilla in 1965 when it also adopted ‘Wandering the Kings Highway’ as the Corps marching song. The School was responsible for training all RASVY personnel in Topographical Surveying, Cartography, Photography, Printing and Illustration. The School also trained Service and Civilian personnel from other agencies and countries, as part of Defence Co-operation Programmes The School moved into the newly developed Latchford Barracks in November 1982. Due to some military restructuring some of the roles of played by the Corps were taken over by civilian organisations or reverted to the Royal Australian Engineers and on the 1st July 1996 the Royal Australian Survey Corps was disbanded. This item is significant because it captures images of Bonegilla near Wodonga and the important role it played in both the history of migration to Australia and also the Australian military.A framed sketch depicting a variety of buildings at Bonegilla when it housed the School of Military Survey.Titles beneath different images At bottom - The School of Military Survey, Bonegilla, Victoria January 1933 - December 1982army at bonegilla, australian school of miltary survey

All members of the Australian Survey Corps, that was later renamed the Royal Australian Survey Corps were expected to be proficient at freehand lettering and figuring. Initially all text on military maps was hand lettered in ink and an extremely high level of proficiency was required. Later technology changes meant that there was less reliance on hand lettering. This 17 x foolscap sized page booklet with light buff coloured cardboard covers held together with an ARNOS fastener was used to teach members of the Australian Survey Corps how to Hand Letter in 1947. Example practice lettering style work sheets are included at the rear of the document.17 x foolscap sized pages with light buff coloured cardboard covers held together with an ARNOS fastener. This is a set of two photographs of Royal Australian Survey Corps and RAAF personnel on survey operations in PNG and possibly Indonesia circa 1975. The identified surveyor - Peter Presser served 20 years in the Australian Regular Army from 1970 to 1990. The UH-1H Iroquois helicopter (serial number partially obscured) appearing in photo 6339.2P was probably A2-379. From 1957 helicopter transport of survey parties revolutionised transport in remote areas. The most common helicopter used by the Royal Australian Survey Corps (RA Svy) up to 1972 was the civilian Bell 47G-2 and the Sioux Light Observation Helicopters (LOH), the Australian Army’s equivalent. These light observation helicopters had a limiting load carrying capacity of up to about 500 pounds. By comparison, one Aerodist team including two people weighed up to 1,500 pounds. After No. 9 Squadron (9SQN) RAAF (Iroquois helicopters) withdrew with the Australian force from Vietnam in December 1971, RAAF supported RA Svy operations with the UH-1H Iroquois helicopter for tasks of transport and resupply of survey teams. The UH-1H was capable of carrying at least three times that of the smaller Bell 47G-2/Sioux LOH helicopter and could also winch personnel and stores into difficult locations. A2-379 crashed killing the aircraft captain (FLTLT Ralph Taylor 9SQN) on impact and seriously injuring four near Wamena, Irian Jaya, Indonesia on survey Operation Cenderawasih 1977 (supporting 2 Fd Svy Sqn – Doppler satellite survey). A Map drawn in 1852 that shows the 5,120 acres that formed Dendy's Special Survey of 1841. In 1840 Henry Dendy, a farmer in Surrey, England acquired a "Special Survey" from the Commissioners for Land and Emigration which gave Dendy the right to choose land in Port Phillip for the "bargain basement" price of only £1 per acre for 5120 acres, (an area of 8 square miles). The Special Survey also included the right to "the shipment of a worker for every £20 spent on land, whose free passage was paid by the Crown, equalling a total of 100 workers ". Accordingly Dendy sold his English holdings and paid the required £5120 and arrived in Melbourne in February 1841. However by this time land in the new colony was selling for £5 - £40 per acre. Because Henry Dendy possessed the order from the Colonial Office in London he was able to successfully oppose Governor LaTrobe's attempts to alter the price of the land. Dendy appointed Jonathan Were, (an entrepreneur, who had arrived in 1839), as his Manager and who later became a partner. Together, Dendy and Were decided on an area 5 miles south from Melbourne, bounded by North Road, East Boundary Road, South Road and to the west by Port Phillip Bay. Were and Dendy pitched their tents in the area now known as ' Park St, Brighton' and sank a well near the corner of 'St Andrew's St and Wells St'. By 1845 J.B Were and Company had bought almost half of Dendy's land and Were built himself "Moorabbin House" in Were St Brighton made from stone, quarried from local cliffs. It was still standing in 1924. Legend records Moorabbin is named after the Aboriginal word for ' Mother's Milk ' The soil is very fertile and well supplied with water especially in the area called 'East Brighton' - now known as Bentleigh and East Bentleigh - By 1850 the area had developed with numerous market gardens, dairy farms, fruit gardens and vineyards supplying food for the growing population of Melbourne. This Map shows the birth of the Brighton and Moorabbin area. On 18th January1859 Brighton was proclaimed a Municipality and a Borough by October 1863. Meanwhile, following a Petition, the area of East and South Brighton, incorporating Mordialloc, Cheltenham, Mentone, Sandringham and Oakleigh separated from Brighton to form the Moorabbin District Roads Board becoming the first Local Government Authority. Col. William Mair was elected as the first Chairman of the Moorabbin Roads Board. Moorabbin Shire 1871 developed further and was declared a City in1934. The City of Moorabbin was the largest Municipality in Melbourne before the Amalgamation of Councils in 1994 when it was divided in the south to City of Kingston and in the north to City of Glen Eira A Photo-lithographed 1852 Map showing the 5,120 acres that formed Dendy's Special Survey of 1841. This photo set also includes the exterior and interior of a new building - 16A, a modular building of several sections transported in and joined together as part of the expansion. Another modular building - 16B was added later in the 1980s to accommodate Technical Services. The two buildings eventually were removed after Fortuna was sold by Defence in 2008.This set of 20 black & white photographs of the refurbishment of Air Survey Squadron’s production areas, was taken in circa 1982. This is a set of four photographs of Bell 47G-2 helicopters used in Royal Australian Survey Corps Field Operations. c1965. From 1957, helicopter transport of survey parties revolutionised transport in remote areas. The most common helicopter used by the Royal Australian Survey Corps at this time was the civilian Bell 47G-2 and the Sioux, the Australian Army’s equivalent. From 1964 an Aerodist MRC2 airborne Electronic Distance Measuring (EDM) system was extensively used for topographic surveys over long distances by trilateration to replace traverse requiring survey station intervisibility. In 1965 the command field survey unit personnel attached to the Army Survey Regiment’s Topographic Squadron were used mainly in support roles such as station clearing, tower operations, station monumenting, Aerodist computations, forward base operations, geodetic observations on the north-south traverse and logistic support for Remote teams. .1P is a photo of a civilian Bell 47G-2 helicopter Registration / Serial VH-UTB owned by Helicopter Utilities from Mascot, NSW c1965. In the background of this photograph is three personnel and vehicles at a field survey camp. The left-hand vehicle is a Willys Jeep with trailer and on the right is probably a Truck, 2 1/2 ton, 6x6, General Service GMC. The Bell 47G-2: VH-UTB was destroyed, and its pilot killed in tragic circumstances during a civilian survey operation on Cape York Peninsula in June 1966. .2P is a photo of a a civilian Bell 47G-2 helicopter Registration / Serial VH-IHB taken in Wyndham, WA. As the letters ‘TAA’ appear on the fuselage, the helicopter was charted from Trans Australian Airways. .3P is a photo of a Bell 47G-2: VH-UTC with survey camp in background. .4P is a photo of a Bell 47G-2 equipped with floats and unidentified personnel loading stores, possibly in Darwin.
