This book has pages labelled 'inwards' and 'outwards' and details correspondence between Aug. 2nd 1918 and C1921. (II) A Secondary Infantry Bendigo Brigade Comforts Fund cash book. 1919. (III) A black exercise book titled 'Golden Square Patriotic League.' Contains the minutes of meetings held between November 26th, 1917 and August 5th, 1918. Also includes the 'Annual Report p resented at Public Meeting held August 15th, 1918 and presented by President Lydia Pethard, Hon. Sec. (IV) A black exercise book labelled 'Wilsons' Reed Branch 2nd Infantry Comforts Fund. Mrs. Geo Goulden. Gordon Hall was the first public building in Buchan. European settlement first entered the area in October 1838 and Buchan station was established in January 1839. Free selection after 1868, and a township was proclaimed in 1873 taking its name from the station. The Grand ball was held on race night, Monday 28th December 1896 in the Gordon Hall at Buchan. From the estate of Elsie Cooke. Elsie Cooke was a librarian in Orbost for many years. She was the daughter of John Cooke early Brodribb settler. Elsie Cooke lived all her life in Gippsland,. She was born at Brodribb in 1895 and died in 1970, Elsie Cooke lived at Bruthen for a short time and, in 1937, moved to live with her aunt, Miss Jean Munro. Miss Cooke was Librarian at the Mechanics Institute for many years. Kindness and consideration for other were Miss Cooke’s attributes and she endeared herself to all who knew her. She was a loyal member of the Presbyterian Church and a stalwart of the Ladies’ Guild, an energetic worker for the Municipal Auxiliary and a member of the Red Cross. (ref. This dress was worn by Brighton's first female mayor, Councillor Di Lopez, to a Mayoral Ball held at Brighton Technical School in 1977. Diane Margaret Lewis completed a law degree at the University of Melbourne, later marrying one of her classmates, criminal lawyer Ramon (Ray) Lopez. When she decided to run for the Brighton City Council in 1975, she was seen as an outside chance. Undeterred, she rallied a small group of friends and supporters and set out on an extensive door-knocking campaign that won voters to her side and successfully unseated former mayor Keith Devenport. She went on to serve two terms on council from 1975 to 1981. Di initiated many local projects, including the creation of a bike path along Nepean Highway and the first Brighton Festival, while balancing family life and a demanding ‘day job’ as personal assistant to Victorian Minister for Youth, Sport and Recreation Brian Dixon. She was a member of the Women’s Electoral Lobby and a champion for women’s representation, encouraging both Sally Allmand and Kate Harman to run for council (both were successfully elected). She advocated forcefully for an open, transparent local government in which ratepayers had the chance to participate and be heard. In 1976 Di became the first woman to hold the title of Mayor of Brighton, and she made it clear from the outset that she was going to do it her way. For the annual mayoral ball in 1977, ordinarily a staid traditional function, she chose a discotheque theme based on the Rod Stewart album Night on the Town, with a broad dress code of ‘black tie or jeans’: ‘You’ve got to get with the times,’ she said. ‘We want people to wear whatever they feel comfortable in.’ Di herself chose to attend in this knee-length chamois dress embellished with strings, ribbons, beads and feathers. It was both a fashion statement, exemplifying her colourful, flamboyant and forthright style, and a political one: a declaration of her intention to lead a progressive council, embracing the new and refusing to be hemmed in by dated traditions. In 2020 she was awarded an Order of Australia Medal for her service to local government and to the community of Brighton.This dress has local historical significance for its association with Brighton's first female mayor, Councillor Di Lopez, who wore it to a Mayoral Ball in 1976. The dress exemplifies her flamboyant reputation, modern outlook and willingness to break norms. At the time, the dress was a radical choice for a Mayoral Ball, where women typically wore formal evening gowns. With her choice of dress, Cr Lopez was making a public statement, breaking away from dated traditions and announcing her intention to bring the Mayor's office into the 1970s. The open-fronted bodice is laced with red ribbon and the skirt is decorated with a large blue wool cross stitch and a combination of blue wool and purple ribbon cross stitch. A metal cup engraved with 'Melbourne Red Cross Younger Set' sits on top of a plastic base, which has a dark coloured plate attached to the front side. On the front plate is engraved "Memorial SWISH - Trophy, Commemorating Annual Contests between the R.V.I.B. and Younger Set Teams". On the rear side are engraved the winners of the trophy: 1975 - RVIB, 1976 - RVIB, 1977 - RVIB, 1978 - MRCYS. The Melbourne Red Cross Younger Set were an auxiliary of RVIB that helped provide awareness and raised funds for services. Swish is a form of table tennis that is played without sight. The ball contains a bell and is hit with a rectangular bat under the board that acts as a net. St. Matthew’s Presbyterian Church Stawell. Now United Church. This landmark of Stawell was opened on 11th April 1869. The tower and spire, overall height of 148 feet, cost 1352 pounds and was paid for by an early mine owner. In March 1869, a month before the Church was opened, the local paper reported that a large red flag on the top of the Presbyterian Spire meant that the last brick had been laid and the massive gilt ball and cross had been placed in position. This is an example of the style of equipment, soldiers would have been offered communion from.Communion kit, consisting of 10 items. 1. A white linen Corporal with small red cross embroidered in its centre. This item was used during Mass/ communion/ Lords Supper to collect any host if it were to be dropped, especially after concecration. 2. Pyx. This is a flat circular dish with a hinged lid. On the side of the container is a small silver ball with a hole drilled through it to allow a string to be placed through and the Pyx to be worn around the priests neck. The Pyx is made of silver, and has a cross engraved on the lid. on the reverse " Rev. J.J.Tressider Catholic Chaplain" is enscribed. This item holds individual hosts ( bread) Following Concecration hosts are to be consumed or worn by the Priest and later to be distrubted as reserved sacrement. 3.Paten, a small silver dish, slightly bowing in the centre. There are no engraving on this item except for the makers stamps on the reverse. "T.G. Aunt & Co." " STG. Silver" Use for holding the Priests Host (Bread) representing the body of Christ, broken for all. 4. Chalice. Silver cup with flaired base.The inseide of the cup has a gold coloured appearence. On the base is a small raised silver cruisifix affixed by a screw. The Chalice was used asa a cup for holding water and wine, drunk from by all as a common cup, beginning and ending with the Priest. 5&6. Two silver Cruets. Each crust is a small silver jug with sloping sides with a small pinched lip for pouring. There are no handles and each cruet has the words " Catholic Chaplain" enscribed on its side. One of the cruets is used for adding a small amount of water to the chalice, representing Christs humanity, the outher is used to add a small amount of wine, representing the blood of Christ and divinity. 7. Lavabo Bowl. a small silver bowl with raised sides. The bowl has " Catholic Chaplain" inscribed in the base of the disg. The Lavabo bowl is used to wash the Priests hands prior to celebrating the Mass. 8. Ewer. A small silver water jug with a curled handle. The Ewer has 3 bands engraved arounf its middle and inside has a goldish tint. On its base is stamped "Albion Pla" "EPNS A" The Ewer is used to wash the priests hands prior to Mass. 9. Oil for the infirm- A small sliver canister that can be screwed to two similat canasters. The base has an internal screw thread to allow this to happen. The lid can be screwed on/ off and has an ornate cross enscribed on its top. The side of the canaster has a letter "I" incribed on it filling most of the canasters side. The canaster is believed to still contain the oil. The oil of the infirm is used outside of the mass in a service to administer the sacrement of the anointing of the sick. 10, Leather Oil Carry case, small, chocolate brown tubular carrying case with two snaps for closure on the side. the case has cardboard stiffening and a small amount of cottonwool to soak up any spilt oil.
