Vanda Joyce Stiles (nee Johnstone) was born in Mount Gambier, South Australia, in 1916. A woman of remarkable resilience and capability, she was widowed during the Second World War when her husband, Leo Stiles, died as a prisoner of war on the Thai-Burma Railway. Joyce devoted herself to raising their two sons in Mount Gambier, meeting life's challenges with strength, hard work, and determination. Joyce latter settled in Kangaroo Flat, where she continued her association as a valued member of the Country Woman's Association (CWA), the Returned Services League (RSL), and the Senior Citizens. Her service badges represent her long-standing commitment to these organisations and the community she supported so generously. A skilled and creative craftswoman, Joyce was known for her talents in cooking, gardening, knitting, crochet, sewing, and preserving the produce she grew. Vanda Joyce Stiles passed away in 1996 in Kangaroo Flat. She is remembered for her resilience, her creativity, and her lifelong dedication to family, community, and service. Sha Sarwari is a multidisciplinary artist who works in sculpture, installation, photography, and performance. A Moth to a Flame is a commentary on the often-tragic dilemma that refugees encounter when escaping their country of origin to seek asylum. This piece comes from a series of works, also titled A Moth to a Flame, where this metaphor is used to show how the hopefulness of a new life can result in a dangerous, sometimes fatal illusion. In this work, Sawari aims to give a voice to the refugee experience, to reconcile cultural identity, new belonging and resilience in the face of trauma.

The 1953 catastrophic earthquakes on Ithaca and nearby Cephalonia caused extensive damage destroying many houses and buildings. The tremors reached 7.2 on the Richter Scale and the devastation was exacerbated by the quake occurring at midday when many people were cooking so fires spread rapidly across the island. The Holy Church of Taxiarchion, located in northern Ithaca on the hill overlooking the village of Platrithia and Afales Bay, was extensively damaged. A committee was formed to rebuild the church and its reconstruction following the earthquake is testament to the determination and resilience of the island's people to overcome hardship and disasters. Federation University Australia showcased its students and research at a luncheon for His Royal Highness The Prince Edward, Earl of Wessex KG GCVO, at the Mt Helen Campus on Sunday, 8 April. The University’s student leaders and academics joined other dignitaries and business representatives for the special event. “The University is deeply honoured to host HRH The Earl of Wessex and share his passion for volunteerism and The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award,” Professor Helen Bartlett, Vice-Chancellor, said. Prior to the luncheon HRH The Earl of Wessex experienced a Welcome to Country and Smoking Ceremony at the University. The program included showing HRH The Earl of Wessex concept plans for a refurbished Sports Science facility at the Mt Helen Campus.  Guests were treated to a performance by the Arts Academy’s renowned vocal ensemble Word of Mouth. At the conclusion of the luncheon, HRH The Earl of Wessex planted a tree at the Student Commons Courtyard. The visit to the University by HRH The Earl of Wessex was the first by a member of the Royal Family since Prince Charles visited in 1974. A community-led project to contribute to a vision for the Shire of Nillumbik. Between October 2011 and June 2012, Nillumbik Shire Council undertook a community information gathering project to ask residents "what is your vision for your local community?” Picture Nillumbik represents a collection of responses from community groups, schools and households via online submissions, photos, interviews and workshop contributions.
