Introduced in 1974, the Braille Book of the Year was created to both acknowledge excellence in writing as well as raise the profile of Braille books. In 1998, the award was won by 'The Fiftieth Gate" by Mark Baker. The Bathurst Award for Narrator of the Year award went to James Wright for the audio version of the same book.
