The Band Rotunda was officially opened on Sunday 5th September 1920 at the naming of the triangular reserve as Woodland Grove at the corner of High and Hovell Streets. The Wodonga Band gave a public performance on this occasion. The tri-coloured ribbon, which stretched across the entrance to the Rotunda was cut by Mrs R. H. Murphy, daughter of Mr John Woodland, Secretary of the Wodonga Shire Council for 35 years, after whom the area was named. The rotunda has since been moved to Martin Park, Wodonga. This image is one of a collection of photos taken by Robert Prentice. The images are clearly identified as he inscribed in the glass a back-to-front capital R (Я) on to which was joined a capital P creating his mark ЯР.These images are significant as they record an important event in the history of Wodonga. Two black and white images showing people gathered for the opening of the new band rotunda in Wodonga in 1920.On photos Wodonga Initials ЯР wodonga band rotunda, wodonga band, robert prentice

The rotunda was built in 1912 by Clarence Montgomery for the Surrey Hills Progress Association and the local community and dedicated to John Gray, "a highly respected and revered citizen". Surrey Hills Brass Band regularly gave concerts in the rotunda, provided music for regular 'loyal' celebrations and also for silent films held in the gardens. The rotunda was quite elevated off the ground due to the slope of the gardens and the bioscope was stored in the room underneath. This was later used as the infant welfare centre until the Progress Association built a dedicated facility for these purposes. The rotunda was demolished in 1972. Clarence Montgomery, carpenter, was living in Sunbury Crescent in 1914. By 1916 he had moved to 83 Croydon Road where he lived for the rest of his life. Clarence was born in 1869 in Taradale, son of John Montgomery and Jane Ford. He married Sarah Ann Ingram in Echuca in 1894. Their children were: 1. Annie (Mrs P Paynter) born Echuca in 1895 2. William Henry born Echuca in 1897 3. Christina Mary (Mrs F Meyers) born Echuca in 1898 4. Violet (Mrs G Ewing) born Echuca in 1902 5. Clarence George Ingram born Echuca in 1906 and died aged 7 months. Violet became a tailoress and Christina a dressmaker. William became a carpenter like his father. Sarah Ann Montgomery died at their home in June 1932 aged 62 years. Clarence died in August 1946 aged 77 years. They are buried in Box Hill Cemetery (P-EB-0020). John Gray was "actively associated with all movements for the benefit of neighbours and fellow citizens". [Quote from the official tribute on his death in 1909.] He was very active in the Surrey Hills Progress Association in the early 1900's. The rotunda built in the Surrey Gardens by the Progress Association in 1912 was dedicated to him. John Gray was born in 1861 in Eldorado. He died on 7 December 1909 in Surrey Hills and is buried in Box Hill Cemetery (M0472). He married Emma Beckett in 1888 at 'Guildford Villa' in Essex Road, the Beckett home. They are listed in both the 1903 and 1906 electoral rolls in Arundel Crescent; his occupation is given as bootmaker. The Alan Holt property register identifies this as 24 Arundel Crescent, known as 'Tumberumba'. John and Emma had a large family: (Gunner) John Robert Gray (1888, Surrey Hills - 21 June 1917, France) Benjamin Walter Gray (1890, Surrey Hills - 1949, Heidelberg) Herbert Harry Gray (1892, Surrey Hills - 1959, Queensland) William Beckett Gray (1897, Surrey Hills - 1899, Surrey Hills) Norman Douglas Gray (1901, Surrey Hills - 1947, Sydney) Evelyn Lizzie Gray (1906, Surrey Hills - 1983) Evelyn married Reginald Roberts and donated a number of photos to the collection. The donor Violet Ewing (nee Montgomery) was Clarence's daughter. She married George Isaac Henry Ewing (blacksmith) in 1934. They inherited the family home at 83 Croydon Road. Although constructed 5 years after their opening, this rotunda was a central feature of the Surrey Gardens which was planted to a design adapted from one suggested by the renowned landscape gardener and botanist William Robert Guilfoyle (1840-1912). Rotundas were a key feature of many late nineteenth and early twentieth century public parks. This particular rotunda was notable for the Chinoiserie influence reflected in its roof. Surrey Gardens are now regarded as one of the City of Boroondara's heritage gardens and this image is significant as evidence of the design of the rotunda which is no longer extant. It is also significant as evidence of the extent of the role of the Surrey Hills Progress Association in the provision of public facilities. A black and white photo of an octagonal rotunda situated within Surrey Gardens taken from the perspective of the main entrance. It is a largely wooden structure with a domed chinoiserie-style roof. The rotunda is enclosed by established gardens. There are 4 people in the photo, with 2 women standing on the steps at the rotunda's entrance. A man and a young person are seated within the rotunda. It has 8 support pillars, which are open with balustrades to 7 sides.rotundas, surrey gardens, union road, surrey hills progress association, surrey hills brass band, parks and reserves, 1925, john gray, clarence montgomery, box hill cemetery, cinema, john gray memorial rotunda, bandstands

Elliot Gardens named to honor General Harold 'Pompey" Elliot, named in 1940. ### Benjamin Green and the Charlton Band Rotunda The **Ben Green Memorial Rotunda**, located in Elliott Gardens, stands as a tribute to one of Charlton’s most active citizens. **Benjamin Green** was a solicitor who practiced law in the town from 1895 until his death in 1923. During his 28 years in the community, he held leadership roles in many of the organizations that shaped the town’s infrastructure and social life. #### Professional and Civic Work Green was a key figure in establishing essential services for Charlton. He was one of the originators of the **Electric Light and Power Company** and served as the solicitor for the **Water Trust**. His commitment to education was shown through his work as a "prime mover" in the creation of the **Charlton Higher Elementary School**. His community involvement also included: * **Sport:** He introduced golf to Northern Victoria and founded the **Charlton Golf Club** in 1900, serving as its President until his death. He also founded the **Plumpton and Open Coursing Club**. * **Veterans:** He took a strong interest in the welfare of returned soldiers and donated **£100** toward the town's war memorial. * **Culture:** He was an active member of the **Mechanics Institute**. #### The Memorial Rotunda When Green passed away in 1923, a public fund was started to build a band rotunda for outdoor music recitals in his memory. The structure was designed and built by **Folliott Gilmore**, a local builder and timber merchant. It was officially dedicated by his friend **Frank Tate**, the Victorian Director of Education. #### Historical Celebrations The rotunda became a central point for major community events. During a "Back-to-School" celebration held during Show Week, the town was decorated with **12,000 handmade paper flowers** created by local women’s organisations. These flowers covered the rotunda, the bridge, and the town entrances. The event was a significant historical bridge for the town; it was attended by nine original students who had attended Charlton's first **"bark hut" school** in 1875, allowing them to see the modern developments Green had helped achieve. This photograph captures the rotunda at A'Vard Picnic Ground in Emerald (where Avard Road meets Menzies Creek). The A'Vard Park area was previously a mining camp for prospectors on the Menzies Creek in the 1890s, with signs of mining said to be visible near the picnic ground. The area was transformed into a picnic ground in the intervening years, and in 1914 Jim Stuart built this rotunda, allegedly for brass bands. Vandals eventually destroyed the original rotunda, but in 1996-7 a replica was built by John Currie and opened by George A'Vard under the direction of Gus Ryberg, the park curator. This photograph is said to have been taken by George W. A'Vard (1890-1966) and donated by George A. A'Vard (1914-2007).A'Vard Park was a significant gathering and recreation space for the local community in the early 20th century. The community considered this rotunda significant enough to be reconstructed in the 1990s, indicating its importance. This item is a relatively large black and white photograph of a covered rotunda. The rotunda stands in the middle of the frame on open, flat ground with occasional sticks and stones. The background shows trees rising behind a wooden fence. Two men sit under the rotunda, their features obscured by shadow; one is sitting on the wall of the rotunda, while the other leans on it. Both are leaning on the posts supporting the roof. The reverse features handwritten annotation in both pencil and blue pen, including information and an accession number. Rotunda, Alexandra Gardens (1910-c.1960). The Alexandra Gardens’ rotunda was located within three acres of ‘gem like’ gardens ‘bright with verdant lawns and choice blooms’ in the centre of Kew. Designed by architects Grainger and Little, the ornate two-storey wooden kiosk functioned as a children’s shelter on the ground level and a bandstand and oratory dais on the upper. Funded by council and community subscription, it was a ‘symbol of the public spirit of Victoria’ and a Kew Jubilee commemoration memorial. Opened in 1910, the Kew Brass Band christened it the ‘finest band rotunda in Melbourne’. Deterioration saw its demise 50 years later. This work forms part of the collection assembled by the historian Dorothy Rogers, that was donated to the Kew Historical Society by her son John Rogers in 2015. The manuscripts, photographs, maps, and documents were sourced by her from both family and local collections or produced as references for her print publications. Many were directly used by Rogers in writing ‘Lovely Old Homes of Kew’ (1961) and 'A History of Kew' (1973), or the numerous articles on local history that she produced for suburban newspapers. Most of the photographs in the collection include detailed annotations in her hand. The Rogers Collection provides a comprehensive insight into the working habits of a historian in the 1960s and 1970s. Together it forms the largest privately-donated collection within the archives of the Kew Historical Society.Lawn and original rotunda in the Alexandra Gardens, Cotham Road, Kew.
