The Geelong Naval Reserve Band was active in the early 1900's. Having been formed and reformed many times, the band consolidated its presence in the town and performed at many concerts and parades. There were a number of brass bands in Geelong at the time.This photo represents one of the earliest pictures of this band. It isn't a well-known band in Victoria so any information on the band is scarce. Alan, born at Cobram on 25 February 1920, was a member of the Dunstan family of Yarrawonga and member of the Royal Australian Navy Band. All of his siblings were musical. The portrait hung in the home of Alan's parents Joseph and Harriet Dunstan who lived at 40 Hume St Yarrawonga. (now the site of Karana Nursing home). After their death the portrait was in the possession of Alan's youngest sibling Dawn White (nee Dunstan). Dawn passed away in 2016. Alan enlisted at Yarrawonga on 4th August 1941 and served on HMAS Australia the flagship of the Australian Navy.no 24862. At the time of his death 25 February 1945 he was serving on the HMAS Rushcutter. He is buried at Rookwood War Cemetery, Sydney. These items come from Warrnambool High School in the 1930s. Warrnambool High School was established as an Agricultural High School in 1907 and, after a merger with Warrnambool North Technical School, it is known today as Warrnamboool College. The items came from Mirth Marfell, the daughter of Henry and Helena Marfell, who was born in Warrnambool in 1919 and went to Warrnambool High School in the 1920s and 30s. Her grandfather, John Marfell, a Warrnambool hay and corn dealer and miller connected to the Warrnambool Co-operative Milling Company, was prominent in community and civic affairs in the town. Mirth Marfell completed her nursing training at the Warrnambool Base Hospital and served in the Australian Army Nursing Service in World War Two for five years. She then became the first Australian nursing organizer for the Victorian Royal College of Nursing. This helmet has been used by a member of the Royal Australian Navy in the early to mid 20th century. The Commonwealth Naval Forces were formed after Federation in 1901 and became known as the Royal Australian Navy in 1911. Pith helmets are now used only in the Australian Defence Forces for ceremonial purposes. No information is available on A.B. Pollock.This helmet is retained for display purposes.This helmet is made of white material with a six-segmented crown and a peak and back covering. In the centre of the crown is a dome with three breathing holes. On top of the dome is an ornamental gold-coloured metal finial. The edge of the crown has a band of white fabric and in the centre of this is a metal badge with a crown, anchor and seven stars and the wording ‘Royal Australian Navy’. Inside, the helmet has a leather rim with an adjustable leather string with brass clips (one missing). Inside, the breathing holes are made of brass and the metal rotates to open or close the holes. This hat was part of a RAAF uniform and likely dates to the Second World War due to the style of crown. Hats such as these are often misshapen at the crown due to the use of earmuff-style headphones worn by aircrew during the Second World. Navy peaked cap in cotton with beige topstitching along crown.
