This academic bonnet belonged to Dr Mary Burnell. Mary Taylor Burnell was born on 21 February 1907, in Norwood, South Australia. She graduated with her MBBS in 1931. In 1932, Burnell served as a resident medical officer at Adelaide Children’s Hospital. By 1934 she was their Honorary Anaesthetist. It was also during this period that Burnell became the first female member of the Australian Society of Anaesthetists. One year later, in 1935, she worked as Secretary for the South Australian Section of the Society. Although resigning from her position at the Children’s Hospital in 1937, Burnell returned in 1942. The outbreak of World War II meant hospital staff and resources were drained. During her work, Burnell lobbied for a Department of Anaesthetics in the Children’s Hospital. Through working at both hospitals, she became aware of the great differences between administering anaesthesia to children and administering it to adults. In 1953 she was elected President of the Australian Society of Anaesthetists. She was the first female to be elected to this position. Two years later in 1955, Burnell was elected as a member of the Board of Faculty of Anaesthetists, Royal Australasian College of Surgeons. In 1966 she was elected Dean of the Faculty of Anaesthetists. Again, she was the first female to be elected to this position. Burnell worked tirelessly to promote the importance of anaesthetics in Australia. Burnell’s contributions to anaesthetics were recognised with Honorary Fellowships to both the Australian Faculty of Anaesthetists and Royal College of Surgeons. Rev Quick served in seven Methodist Circuits in Victoria, one in Tasmania, one City Mission (North Melbourne) and also an appointment with the Methodist Inland Mission in Central Australia. He was one of the first ministers to be appointed to the new John Flynn Memorial Church in Alice Springs. Aubrey Quick was a part-time Chaplain in the Royal Australian Airforce and received an Order of Australia for his pastoral care of the apprentices the RAAF. He served on the University of Melbourne Queens College Council for 23 years. Navy blue wool belted jacket with four brass buttons and a brass buckle. The jacket has four pleated pockets, each with a brass button, one small ticket pocket on the RHS and two pale blue grosgrain ribbons at the cuffs. It is lined with black cotton and the sleeves with cream striped lining. Colonel Leslie Coleman was the Honorary Colonel of 8/13 VMR. Colonel Coleman graduated to the RAAC from the Royal Military College in 1939 and transferred to the 2nd AIF in 1941. He was adjutant of the 2/10 Armoured Regiment when the unit was raised in 1941. Later in the war he was attached to British 7 Armoured Division in Western Europe during and shortly after the invasion of Normandy. Lieutenant Colonel John Neale served in the Royal Australian Navy in World War Two. Following the war he returned to Albury and joined the 8/13 VMR in 1948. He rose through the ranks and became the Commanding Officer in 1974. He too was the Honorary Colonel 1990-92. Major Norman Whitehead MC served with the 21 Light Horse prior to World War Two. He joined the AIF and served with 2/6th Armoured Regiment. He was wounded during the capture of Buna New Guinea 1942 and awarded the Military Cross. Following the war he was one of the original officers of the 8/13 VMR when it was raised in 1948. He was squadron Commander of 'A' Squadron. Peter CHURCHER (28 February 1964- ) Born Brisbane, Australia 2006 moved to Barcelona, Spain After studying Music at Trinity College, London Peter Churcher completed a Bachelor of Fine Arts (Painting) at Victoria College (know Deakin University) in 1991. He is now considered one of Australia's leading figurative painters. Peter Churcher's work was represented in the prestigious Archibald Prize on nine occasions. In 2002 Peter Churcher was commissioned as an Australian War Artist documenting the Royal Australian Navy and the Royal Australian Air Force enduring the Australian involvement in the coalition war against terrorism. His works are held in many Australian collections. Professor Kerry O. Cox was Vice Chancellor at the University of Ballarat from 2001 - 2005. This item is part of the Federation University Art Collection. The Art Collection features over 2000 works and was listed as a 'Ballarat Treasure' in 2007.
