Former Army nurse, Ruby Campbell, who served two years in Salonika, Greece, in World War 1, celebrated her 100th birthday on August 6. Ruby enlisted in the Australian Army Nursing Corps (AANC) in 1917 and sailed for Suez and Salonika. Ruby's daughter, Elizabeth Milne, who has written a history of her mother's war-time experiences, says her mother has never been willing to talk about her two years in Salonika, but has described the hospital as looking like a concentration camp, with high barbed wire fencing and night patrols by armed guards with dogs.A magazine page with two vertical stories, the relevant story consists of two columns of text beneath the title, and two black and white photos.
