Victorian Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (VIOSH) Australia is the Asia-Pacific centre for teaching and research in occupational health and safety (OHS) and is known as one of Australia's leaders in the field. Harold Greenwood Thomas was one of a group of students who founded the Safety Institute of Australia (SIA). They all had attended the first Industrial Safety and Accident Prevention Course conducted by Melbourne Technical College in 1948. Due to his long service to safety and prevention there is the Harold Greenwood Thomas Lifetime Achievement Award. This is the most prestigious award by the Institute and may be issued to a person who has demonstrated a combination of long term outstanding and influential contribution to the profession in a specific or generalist area of Occupational Health and Safety and Work Health and Safety, where there work has made a major impact on outcomes in Australian workplaces. The Award will be issued once annually, but the board retains the right not to award in any given year, or in special circumstances more than once in a year. It Award is for an individual. VIOSH Australia enrolled its first PhD candidate in 1995 and during 1996 focused on attracting increasing numbers of students. In 1996, three candidates were enrolled through VIOSH Australia.They were John Culvenor, Geoffrey Dell and Thomas Mitchell. All had Prof Dennis Else as their supervisor. Previously, Geoffrey Dell was in Intake 7, 1985, Occupational Hazard Management. Geoffrey Dell's topic was "Airline Baggage Handler Back Injuries - Causes and Prevention." "The aim of this study is to investigate the work practises and operational systems used by baggage handlers in a range of airlines, worldwide. Where possible the investigation will include an epidemiological study of baggage handler back injury occurrence in those airlines. The information gathered will provide an understanding of back injury causation modes, and will focus attention on the specific tasks for which engineering solutions should be sought. Engineering solutions identified will be subject to controlled trial, to confirm their validity." This led to the construction of a full scale plywood baggage compartment model and a partnership with Ballarat University's School of Human Movement and Sports Science. Three different loading systems were tested. Qantas baggage handlers travelled to Ballarat University to fill the human frame of the investigation. The photographs show this aspect of the research. In 1997, Geoffrey Dell was awarded the Eric Wigglesworth Prize. THE AUSTRALIAN TRUST OF CONSERVATION VOLUNTEERS, ONE OF 14 INDIVIDUALS AND ORGANIZATIONS, TO RECEIVE UNITED NATIONS ENVIRONMENT AWARD NAIROBI, 1 June 2000 - The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) announced today that the Australian Trust of Conservation Volunteers of Australia (ATCV), has been elected to the prestigious ranks of its Global 500 Roll of Honour for outstanding contributions to the protection of the environment. ATCV is one of 14 individuals and organizations to receive this honour in 2000. Founded in 1982, ATCV is a national, not-for-profit community organization, whose mission is to attract and manage a force of volunteers in practical conservation projects for the betterment of the Australian environment. ATCV completes more than 4000 week-long conservation projects in urban, regional and remote areas of Australia each year. Activities range from bush regeneration, tree planting, seed collection, endangered species protection, weed control, flora and fauna surveys, walking trail construction, fencing, environmental monitoring and the protection of world heritage areas. ATCV community participation has resulted in more than 1.8 million trees being planted in 1999, and in more than 7.3 million trees planted over the past 10 years. Community involvement totalled 200,000 project days in 1999 and more than 700,000 days since 1989. To encourage the involvement of young people, ATCV developed and manages the federal government-funded programme Green Corps. Green Corps is a six-month traineeship for 17 to 20 year-olds, which incorporates conservation projects and accredited training. Since 1997, more than 4,000 trainees have completed the Green Corps programme. ATCV is a founding member of the International Conservation Alliance, which brings together organizations working in conservation volunteering, and is a member of the World Conservation Union (IUCN). Charles Steedman was headmaster of Williamstown Grammar School from 1870-76 and 1885-90. In 1870, under agreement with school trustees, Sir George Verdon and John Courtis, he leased the school under a seven-year lease, effectively saving it from closure. Steedman had previously been manager of Sandridge Baths and a champion swimmer of Victoria. His 1867 book, 'Manual of Swimming', was the first major technical contribution to the sport of speed swimming and water safety, for which Steedman was inducted into the Sport Australia Hall of Fame in 2006. As headmaster of Williamstown Grammar, Steedman initiated a student produced school paper called 'The Schoolboy' (surviving editions can be accessed at the State Library of Victoria), added swimming lessons to the curriculum and opened enrolment to girls in 1885. The book contains nine illustration plates featuring line drawings of a human figure in the positions detailed by Steedman in his text. These drawings are attributed to O.R. Campbell. Oswald Rose Campbell is best known for his appointment (1876-1886) as drawing master of the School of Design, a department of the Public Library, Museums and National Gallery of Victoria. He taught (and famously disagreed with) the likes of celebrated Australian artists, Tom Roberts and Frederick McCubbin. O.R Campbell taught drawing and painting at Williamstown Grammar in the early 1870s.The book holds historic significance for Westbourne Grammar School, having been written by a former headmaster and very important figure in the history of the school. It evokes our early history as an emerging grammar school with links to prominent athletes, artists and gentry of colonial Melbourne. Taking castings from the larynx of cadaver's, Archie Brain studied the anatomy and physiology of the upper airway in minute detail. He devised the Laryngeal Airway Marsk (LMA) as an alternative to endotracheal intubation. Since first gaining a patent in 1982, he produced over 1000 prototypes over the next 30 years in a constant effort to improve the device and patient safety. The LMA is a recent innovation and provides an alternative to endotracheal intubation and has made a significant contribution to safe airway management.
