The mill is currently owned by Mectec.Orbost has historically been based on the timber industry, but that industry has declined considerably over the last 20 years. The number of locals involved in the timber industry has declined and many of the mills have closed. The D indicated that it was the fourth barge to be built in 1926 by Murray River Sawmills. The number represented the year it was built.This original timber piece, salvaged from the D26 barge is an important relic from an original outrigger logging barge from the early 20th century, one of the last logging barges built as the Murray River timber trade was declining. The barge was restored by the Port's chief shipwright Kevin Hutchinson with assistance from Laurie Rendle and Alan Battsch. and the PS Adelaide is also a significant feature in the Port's collection. Murray River Sawmills...Adelaide Logging industry Murray River Sawmill D26 Timber outrigger logging barge D26 Functional object Outrigger Barge Murray River Sawmills Mr A Moritz Mr Colebatch Shire of Deakin ...The D26 is an authentic outrigger logging barge - one of four that were towed by P.S. Adelaide for 80 years of its working life. In March 1987 Council purchased the barge from Deakin Shire in South Australia for $15,000. However, its restoration was put on hold until the crew had completed work on the P.S. Enterprise, eventually beginning in 1988 using local red gum. The barge was relaunched at Echuca East on Australia Day, 1990. The D26 remains at the Port of Echuca and on special occasions can be seen being towed by the P.S. Adelaide for demonstrations. The restored D26 outrigger barge is an example of early 20th century boat building technology developed for transporting reg gum logs downstream along the Murray River, often from the Barmah Forest to the Murray River Sawmills at Echuca. It shows the resourcefulness and manual transport techniques for a timber that does not float and had to be chained to the outrigging logs laying perpendicular to the hull. These outrigger barges could be let go to float with the current downstream with a bargeman onboard. Often there was no tiller or helm, but a chain was tied to the ballast at the back to keep the barge in the centre of the river channel. This allowed the Murray River Sawmills built 4 barges to go behind the PS Adelaide, the A11, the B22, the C24 and the D26. There are red lines ruled at the edges of one of the pages. ...In the District Court of Western Otago Holden at Invercargill In the matter of the Debtors and Creditors Act 1876 and the several acts amending the same and in the matter of George Weeks of Invercargill Sawmiller a debtor...The material gives details of the court order of discharge from debt of George Weeks, a sawmiller from Invercargill, New Zealand. There are red lines ruled at the edges of one of the pages. ...Tait collection: item 60 of 62 This is a document giving George Weeks, a sawmiller from Invercargill in New Zealand, an order of discharge from his debts in 1883. In the Southland Times of March 1876 there is a notice of a meeting of creditors of George Weeks of Invercargill in the matter of his insolvency. It is not clear whether the document we have concerns that same insolvency or a further one. If it is the same one then it took seven years for George Weeks to gain his legal discharge from debt. It is not known how this document came to be in Warrnambool but it is assumed that it was in the possession of a Warrnambool lawyer, probably Ernest Chambers, who had legal offices in Warrnambool at the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century. It has been passed down to successive lawyers occupying legal offices in Kepler street, Warrnambool and was located in this building in 2014. This document has no known relevance to Warrnambool except that it was in the possession of a 19th century Warrnambool lawyer. This is a cream-coloured piece of parchment paper folded in two, with handwritten material in brown/black ink on two of the pages. The material gives details of the court order of discharge from debt of George Weeks, a sawmiller from Invercargill, New Zealand. There are red lines ruled at the edges of one of the pages. There is a red stamp of the District Court of Western Otago. The writing is fading but legible. The article was originally published in the Mansfield Historical Society Magazine in November 1985. Feiglin's Sawmill (later the Narbethong Timber & Trading Co.) was a cornerstone of the regional timber industry on the Acheron Way in Narbethong, just outside Marysville. Following the devastating 1939 Black Friday bushfires, sawmill owners expanded into the region to salvage dead timber. Feiglin's was established in the Acheron Valley, employing local mill workers who lived in a small settlement of four-room cottages on Withers Lane. By 1956, the broader Marysville area was a bustling timber hub with numerous mills, including Feiglin's, processing over 56,000 cubic metres of timber annually and supporting livelihoods for roughly 1,000 people.Black Saturday: The 2009 fires decimated the forest and completely destroyed the Narbethong Timber & Trading Co. ... ‘R.J.’, as he was known established a sawmill at Barmah in the 1890s, before relocating to this site in 1923. ...Digital recording of oral history interview with Geoff Evans of Evans Brothers Sawmill Echuca. ...‘R.J.’, as he was known established a sawmill at Barmah in the 1890s, before relocating to this site in 1923. ...Geoff Evans was the third generation to run Evans Brothers Sawmills that operated from the northern end of the Echuca Wharf from 1923 to 1983. His grandfather Richard James Evans orig. of England, settled in Victoria at a young age. He first worked as a butcher and later cut firewood in the Heathcote and Bacchus Marsh area. ‘R.J.’, as he was known established a sawmill at Barmah in the 1890s, before relocating to this site in 1923. It became known officially as the Evans Bros. Echuca Red Gum Sawmill. This site proved more economical due to its position at the railhead. Paddlesteamers towed barges carrying the logs from the surrounding forests to this mill. The Steamers that were owned by the Evans family were the Edwards (built 1875) and the Melbourne (built 1912). The Edwards was the main towing vessel. Outrigger barges at this mill were the Impulse (1885), Alison (1907), Clyde (once a paddlesteamer, built in 1884). Insider barges at the mill were old wool barges with iron topsides, the J.L.Roberts (1894), ADA (1899) and the Whaler which was of wooden construction. The Evans Mill cut both red gum and Murray pine. There was a main mill for the red gum and a second one for the pine on this site. Two new Marshall steam engines had been purchased by the family, one was used in the P.S. Edwards and the other for the Barmah mill and later this site. The Evans Bros. Mill was very much a family concern with it being owned and operated firstly by R.J., then his son Frederick. R. Evans and later grandson Geoff Evans. The mill employed 18 workers and operated until the 1980s, only briefly was it in the hands of other owners before the construction on part of the site of a tourist-oriented building known as the Red Gum Works which eventually made way for the Port of Echuca Discovery Centre in 2014.Knowledge of the redgum timber milling industry and associated mechanisms such as log slips is scant with little photographic representations to be found. The industry created alongside the Murray River in various places was very unique given the nature of red gum not floating and ingenuity and making use of local resources was required. Geoff Evans had firsthand knowledge of much of this process and how the Echuca Wharf area used to be in past decades. Pty. Ltd. Waygara Sawmilling co ...This is an invoice from the Waygara Sawmill from 1968. This mill was located at Waygara (near Orbost), adjacent to the Bairnsdale-Orbost Railway Line. It was one of many mills developed in East Gippsland after World War II and benefited from its strategic location next to the railway line. Timber was cut at this mill and loaded directly onto trains for transport to Melbourne. This milling company had other mills at Sardine Creek and Nowa Nowa. Waygara Sawmills were owned by Harry Lederman of Melbourne. This item is significant because it relates to one of the many large saw milling companies which developed in the Orbost district during the 1960s-1970s. This mill was at Waygara near Orbost.
