Thomas Jefferson Connelly played an important role in role in seeking support for the movement towards federation of the Australian colonies. Connelly was the first Bendigo born Mayor of Bendigo, and the youngest Mayor of Bendigo. He died in 1892 aged just 34. The portrait was painted by Robert William Bugg from a Bartlett Bros. photograph. It was unveiled in the ANA Hall in View Street by Alfred Deakin on October 18, 1893. A re-enactment of the unveiling was held at the Bendigo Art Gallery on October 18 1993. a. Three page typewritten outline of the speech given by John Quick. b. Handwritten script of Quick's speech used at the re-enactment. c. Handwritten script of Alfred Deakin's speech used at the re-enactment. d. Yellow paper bifold program for the Centenary of the Unveiling of the Portrait of Thomas Jefferson Connelly. The part of John Quick was played by Robert Lloyd. The part of Alfred Deakin was played by Robert Jealous. The back page contains a Timeline of the life of Connelly who served on the City Council, including one year as Mayor (1888 - 1889). e.
