These photograph, taken by The Advocate in 1991, were published as part of the newspaper’s ongoing column profiling local traders and businesses across the district. These photographs feature Lelias Karasaridis (Production Superintendent) of the B.H.P. Steel Service Centre (Formerly Lysaght) located at 329 St. Albans Road, Sunshine North. The factory was once a major employer in Sunshine, with a workforce of over 100 people processing more than 1,200 tonnes of coiled steel each month. Its products were supplied to prominent customers such as Toyota, BTM Tube Makers, Gerard Springs and Alco. As manufacturing conditions became more challenging, output declined to around 800 tonnes per month and employment fell to 61 workers, reflecting the broader pressures facing Australian industry.The Advocate’s feature on local traders and businesses was a modest yet well‑liked column that played a meaningful role in strengthening community identity. The photograph was taken in front of the Royal District Nursing Service (RDNS) Service Centre at Chessell Street, South Melbourne. The three men are employees of RDNS who work in the RDNS Service Centre and are looking at a donated Van.In May 1971 the Commission Shop donated a Van to the Royal District Nursing Service (RDNS), to be used by the Maintenance crew for delivery of equipment and transporting goods and documents between RDNS Centres and Headquarters. It was also used for transporting Maintenance staff, and the equipment they required, to do maintenance work at RDNS Centres as needed. The Millennium Man was a large metal sculpture commissioned by Village Cinemas Sunshine in the 1990s. Created by BIGFish in Footscray, he was designed as a playful, larger‑than‑life movie mascot. He was a muscular figure holding a globe wrapped in a strip of film, symbolising movies around the world The sculpture and was built from metal, with a bold, comic‑book aesthetic and was only intended originally to last only five years, but he became a local icon instead. The Sunshine Marketplace redevelopment in 2016 included a significant refurbishment of Millennium Man but by 2020, he had deteriorated badly with rust and structural issues, and the fact that people loved climbing on him made him a public liability. The Millennium Man was removed sometime after 2020 and has not returned to the site. The wooden buildings of Sunshine Railway Station were demolished as part of the Region Railway Line works that created additional and longer platforms, pedestrian overpass with lifts for disability access. The City of Brimbank Sunshine Branch Library and Customer Service Centre was built on the former H.V. McKay Massey Ferguson Site.
