This Engine Room section of a ship's telegraph system was part of the equipment of the Ports and Harbour ship the SS Rip. The vessel serviced and maintained the lights and buoys at Port Phillip Bay and Queenscliffe. The SS Rip was possibly the former gunboat "Albert". The ship’s communication system that was used from the late 19th century to early-to-mid-20th-century is called an Engine Order Telegraph (E.O.T.) or ship’s telegraph. The system has two parts, the Bridge Section and the Engine Room Section. The Bridge Section is usually mounted on top of a pedestal, and the Engine Room Section is often attached to a vertical surface. The standard commands printed or stamped onto the dial are the directions of AHEAD and ASTERN, and the speeds of STOP, FULL, EASY, STD. BY. and FIN. ENG. The ship’s pilot on the Bridge of a vessel sends his Orders for speed and direction to the to the Engine Room with the E.O.T. He moves the lever or levers, depending on the number of engines the ship has, to change the indicator on the Bridge Section’s dial to point in the new direction and speed of travel. This change causes the Orders to be duplicated on the Engine Room Section’s dial and a bell to signal the change simultaneously. The engineer then adjusts the ship’s engines and steering equipment to follow the pilot’s Order. The manufacturer, Mulne Bros., was a copper and brass works at 166 Sussex Street Sydney, in December 1892, and previously from 1870 at 128 to 130 Sussex Street. The company made and sold a wide range of equipment including machinery and gauges for the Railways. The Engine Room section is significant for being part of the communications system on the ship SS Rip, owned by Melbourne's Ports & Harbours department and used to service and maintain the navigation signals of Port Phillip Bay and at Queenscliffe in the mid-20th century. The dial is an example of marine equipment made in Australia and used for the safety of Victorian vessels. It is also significant for being made by an early Australian manufacturer, Milne Brothers of Sydney.Engine Room Section of a ship’s telegraph or Engine Order Telegraph (E.O.T.). The round metal dial has inscriptions stamped around the edges. The inscriptions are nautical terms for direction and speed and include the maker’s details. The double bevel gauge is used as a drawing tool, to measure, set angles and transfer angles. The shipwright’s tools on display in the Great Circle Gallery are connected to the maritime history of Victoria through their past owner, user and donor, Laurie Dilks. Laurie began his career as a shipwright in the mid-1900s, following in the wake of the skilled carpenters who have over many centuries used their craft to build and maintain marine vessels and their fittings. You can see Laurie’s inscription on the tool called a ‘bevel’. Laurie worked for Ports and Harbours, Melbourne, for over 50 years, beginning in the early 1960s. He and a fellow shipwright inscribed their names on a wheelhouse they built in 1965; the inscription was discovered many decades later during a repair of the plumbing. Many decades later Laurie worked on the Yarra moving barges up and down the river and was fondly given the title ‘Riverboat Man’ His interest in maritime history led him to volunteer with the Maritime Trust of Australia’s project to restore and preserve the historic WWII 1942 Corvette, the minesweeper HMAS Castlemaine, which is a sister ship to the HMAS Warrnambool J202. Laurie Dilks donated two handmade displays of some of his tools in the late 1970s to early-1980s. The varnished timber boards displayed the tools below together with brass plaques. During the upgrade of the Great Circle Gallery Laurie’s tools were transferred to the new display you see there today. A sheathing hammer is used for attaching the copper or Muntz sheathing to the outside of a vessel. The outside cover of the hull of a ship or boat is called sheathing. In previous centuries the sheathing was timber but on long voyages, the sea worms could eat through the timber and their holes would weaken the sheathing, sometimes causing the vessel to break up in the rough sea or if the ship was beached. Copper or Muntz sheathing was later used. It was effective but very expensive. In modern times the hulls of ships are iron. Boat builders and shipwrights use a spar gauge to transfer measurements and shapes onto their workpiece, particularly if they are working on a curved surface, like an oar or the hull of a boat. This spar gauge is an expanding gauge. It measures multiple equal distances at the same time, allowing for decreased work time on the job at hand. The tool is similar to a ‘toy’ designed in Australia in the 1960s called a Sketch-A-Graph, derived from the mathematics and mechanics of a ‘pantograph’. The shipwright’s tools on display in the Great Circle Gallery are connected to the maritime history of Victoria through their past owner, user and donor, Laurie Dilks. Caulking is the use of cork or other substances to seal the seams and joints of the vessel to make them watertight. Caulking lasts for quite some time but eventually dries out and needs to be replaced. A hammer is often used with a caulking iron to drive it along the seams. The caulking iron’s blade is tapered to be narrower at the tip to make it easier to remove it from the joint. Chains are available in a variety of link shapes and sizes. They have many uses on sailing vessels, such as part of anchoring systems or loading cargo onboard the ships. A link called a shackle is used as a quick and flexible way to join two pieces of chain. Sometimes the shackle needs a tool to remove it. A shackle punch like this one will do the job. A modern term for a similar tool, that also has a handle, is a ‘breakdown’ tool. It is designed for aligning and driving pins in and for removing bolts, rivets and pins. This shackle punch has a handle with six flat sides that prevent it from rolling around when stored. It has a fine shank that tapers down to the end. The tool is placed on the join of the shackle, and then the end of that handle is hit with a hammer until the join breaks apart. This all-metal centre pop punch tool has a rounded point, thick body and flat round head. The centre of the body is concave to allow a strong grip. This also creates a flat side and would prevent the tool from rolling off the workbench. The ‘centre pop’ in a shipwright’s toolbox may have been used as a punch to remove the ‘eyes’ from a ‘dead eye’ pulley or other jobs that needed a hole removed from the work. He also donated tools to Queenscliffe Maritime Museum and Clunes Museum. The shipwright’s tools on display in the Great Circle Gallery are connected to the maritime history of Victoria through their past owner, user and donor, Laurie Dilks. Laurie began his career as a shipwright at Ports and Harbours in Melbourne in the mid-1900s, following in the wake of the skilled carpenters who have over many centuries used their craft to build and maintain marine vessels and their fittings.Caulking iron; an iron tool with round flat surface on top, above a narrow, long round handle that flares outwards to form a thick, narrow wedge shape. This toolbox was part of the equipment of the coastal trader Reginald M. It is typical of general-purpose toolboxes of the early 20th century. The covering of pitch on the outside was likely to be a form of waterproofing and protection. The vessel “Reginald M” was a two-masted coastal ketch, owned and built by Mr Jack (John) Murch of Birkenhead, Port of Adelaide, South Australia. Its construction took approximately 6 months and it was launched at Largs Bay in 1922. The vessel had many owners and adventures over the years until it was purchased by Flagstaff Hill Maritime Museum & Village in 1975. It was then used as an active display until 2016. Visitors could go aboard, turn the ship's wheel, go below deck and get the feel of the captain's quarters, sailors' quarters and the storage space available. The Reginald M was a popular exhibit for young and old, until 2016.This toolbox is significant because of its connection to the history of the vessel REGINALD M, the coastal trading ketch from South Australia built in 1922 and in existence until 2016. Its flat bottom, single-chine shape illustrates a very simple but robust method of construction, compared to other round-bilged examples of trading vessels. This ship's wheel was hand-made from wood and metal using a recycled cart wheel. It originally belonged to the "Reginald M", a coastal trading ketch. ‘REGINALD M’ 1922 to 1975- The vessel “Reginald M” was a two-masted coastal ketch, owned and built by Mr Jack (John) Murch of Birkenhead, Port of Adelaide, South Australia. Its construction took approximately 6 months, and it launched at Largs Bay in 1922. The Reginald M’s purpose was to serve the coastal trade of South Australia, to carry cargo cheaply and efficiently. Some have said that the keel was, in fact, hewn from two telegraph poles! Its builder frequented all the salvage yards for materials and fittings. Reginald M had a very shallow draft and a flat bottom that enabled it to come close to shore and to sit high and dry at low tide or to be beached on sand. The flat bottom was also to make the ship able to skim over reefs. Wagons could load and unload direct from their sides. Its cargo included Guano, Barley, Wool, Horses, Cattle, Timber, Explosives, Potatoes, Shell Gritt and Gypsum. On April 9th 1931Reginald M weathered a large storm in St Vincent Gulf, SA. The vessel suffered great damage; the mast snapped, and the crew laboured for four hours to free it by chopping off the mast and rigging. The crew patched it up and slowly returned to Port Adelaide with only a portion of the insured cargo being damaged. The crew members at the time were owner Mr John H Murch of Wells Street, Largs Bay; Skipper Mr R Murch, John’s brother; Murray, son of Captain Murch; and Seaman John Smith. Reg Webb purchased Carribie Station, at Marion in the Warooka District, south of Adelaide, in 1921. He cleared the land and farmed sheep and grain. In 1923, he shipped his own wool and grain from Marion Bay, having first carted 300 bags of the barley grain, 12 bags at a time, along the unmade track to the jetty. A photograph donated to Flagstaff Hill, dating about 1929 - 1942, shows two men on the Reginald M, holding between them their fishing catch of a large hammer shark. The photograph is stamped “GRENFELL STUDIO PORT LINCOLN PRINT” and titled “hammer shark caught on Reginald Emm”. The donor’s family lived on the Your Peninsula and dispatched their grain from a chute at Gleeson’s Landing to the awaiting transport vessel. Reg knew the Murch Brothers from Port Adelaide. The brothers had been using their ketch, Reginald M, to ship Guano from the Islands, led by Captain Richard Murch. Reg approached them in 1934 about shipping grain from Marion Bay. The brothers visited the bay and thought it was an ideal place. They showed Reg where to stack his grain, and they measured up the cliffs. When Reg was ready, they brought down and installed a ninety-foot wooden chute. The bags of grain were individually pushed down the chute, landing in a waiting small boat, then rowed to Reginald M with 14 bags at a time. After 10 hours, Reginald M would have a load of 1300 bags of grain to ship to waiting ports. At one time, a wild storm destroyed the chute, so they built a stronger replacement chute. Reginald M engaged in the shipping of grain from there until 1938. In 1940, Able Seaman Allan H Lucas served on the Reginald M between September and December, being engaged and discharged from Port Adelaide. The ship’s Master, W S Murch, signed his Certificate of Discharge. It seems that at the Reginald M was used, at one time, as a Customs vessel, as one photograph in Flagstaff Hill’s collection shows “H.M.C. No. 3, Pt Adelaide” on the bow. In 1969, the last freight left Marion Bay on the ketch Reginald M carrying grain, wool, and explosives. In late 1970, the Mt. Lyell Mining and Railway Company bought the vessel to use as a barge to carry explosives. In 1972, the Navy League of Strahan, Tasmania, purchased it for use by the Strahan Sea Cadet Unit to use at Macquarie Harbour and renamed it T.S. Macquarie. However, this plan for the use of Reginald M did not happen. In 1974, Mr Andrew Rennie, of East Brighton, Melbourne, bought it for a similar purpose, paying $5,000 and donating a ‘Cadet of the Year’ trophy to the Sea Cadets. He sailed it from Strahan to Melbourne, planning to use it for pleasure sailing. Also, in 1975, Reginald M was bought by the Melbourne Ferry Company at auction. Later in 1975, Flagstaff Hill Maritime Museum bought the Reginald M for $20,000. It became a popular exhibit in the Village’s lake. In 2006, using funds from a $4,000 government grant, the restoration of the vessel continued. Flagstaff Hill Maritime Village’s Collection holds other artefacts associated with Reginald M. They include - Photographs of the Reginald M, including one photograph of it in Outer Harbour, S.A., dated 1947, with Skipper- R.F. Dale and Owner- John Murch. Another shows it docked at Port Adelaide, with the lettering H.M.C. No. 3 Pt ADEL (standing for His /Her Majesty’s Customs). There is a black and white photo of it at a wharf and another showing a person on board. - a lifebuoy, made of cork, with the inscription of “Pt Adelaide” on it. - Helm section, removed and replaced during restoration. - a bullet found in pieces of timber when Reginald M was restored in 1979 Reginald M was a much-loved exhibit at the Maritime Village, where many visitors enjoyed boarding and exploring a real ship with a long history. Sadly, the Reginald M was decommissioned in late 2016, due to the continuing prohibitive cost of maintenance and the risk to public safety. Components from the Reginald M are held in Flagstaff Hill's collection as a reminder of the Reginald M’s history. This ship's wheel is significant because of its association with the REGINALD M. The bosun’s chair is a typical piece of equipment included on board a vessel in the late 19th and early 20th century. The nautical word 'bosun' is an abbreviation of the word 'boatswain' who is the person responsible for the repair and maintenance of the vessel. It could be used when rigging the sails and for rescue at sea, along with a thick rope anchored on shore or a rope between ships. It could also be used to move passengers to and from a ship as well as cargo on, to and from the vessel. A bosun's chair is a simple piece of equipment made from a short plank of wood and a sturdy piece of rope. It looks a little like a child's swing but usually has a pulley system that allows the user to adjust the length of the hanging piece of rope, and in so-doing adjusts the height above the floor or ground or sea. In modern times a harness would also be worn by the bosun’s chair user for safety reasons. Bosun's chairs are also used by window cleaners, construction workers and painters. The bosun’s chair is sometimes just a short plank, or even a canvas sling. The bosun's chair is significant for its association with maritime equipment carried on board a vessel in the late 19th and early 20th century for maintenance and safety purposes. It was occasionally used to save lives. The bosun's chair is also significant as an early version of equipment still used today. Since its invention there have been many safety features added in certain industries such as window cleaning and painting.Bosuns chair; flat smooth rectangular piece of wood, with rope passing through two holes at each end of plank and looped together above plank to form a suspended seat swing. This copper nail, sometimes known as a ‘Dumpy Bolt’ or spike, was salvaged from the hull of the wreck of the “George III”. It dates back to at least 1810. It was found by an abalone diver on the south east coast of Tasmania. The nail would have been used to hold the layers of the ship’s keel frame and the planking together. The nail has been passed from the abalone diver to an interested business man on a trip to the south of Hobart, on again to the business man’s close friend who then donated it to Flagstaff Hill Maritime Village. The metal of nails such as this one, after being in the sea for a long time, become affected by the natural reaction of the sea water, causing it to degenerate and thin, and the stress from the force of the sea over the years alters its shape. Iron nails had been used on ships previously, but they quickly corroded in the salt; ships needed regular, costly and time-consuming maintenance to replace the iron nails. Towards the end of the 18th century the British Navy trialled the use of copper nails, finding them to be very successful. Merchant ships began to adopt this process in the early 19th century, although it made ship building very expensive and was more often used for ships such as the “George III” that sailed on long voyages. The three masted sailing ship “George III” was a convict transport ship built in Deptford, England, in 1810. On 14th December 1834 she left Woolwich, England, bound for Hobart Town, Van Diemen’s Land (Tasmania), under Captain William Hall Moxey. She was carrying 220 male convicts plus crew, guards and their families, totalling 294 persons (another 2 were during the voyage). Amongst the cargo were military stores including several copper drums of gun powder. On 27th January 1835 the “George III” was near the Equator, about half way into her journey. A fire broke out and the gun powder was in danger of explosion, threatening the whole ship. Two convicts braved the heat and smoke, entered the store and seized the gun powder drums, suffering burns for their efforts but saving a probable disaster. The fire destroyed some of the provisions and food was scarce. Many became ill with scurvy and some died during the journey. Nearing the end of their journey on 10th April 1835 the “George III” was headed through the D'Entrecasteaux Channel, south east Tasmania, between the mainland and Bruny Island. She was sailing in the moonlit night to hasten her arrival in port due to the great number of sick on board. She struck uncharted rocks, known only to the local whalers, between Actaeon Reef and Southport Lagoon and within hours began to break up. The ship’s boats were used to first rescue the women and children. Firearms were used to help quell the panic of the convicts below decks and some were killed by the shots. Many convicts, including the sick, were drowned. In all, 133 lives were lost including 5 of the crew, guards and their families. It was the third worst shipping disaster in Tasmanian waters. A monument in honour of the prisoners who perished in the “George III” has been erected, noting the date of the wreck as “Friday 10th April 1835.” (NOTE: there are a few differences between sources regarding dates of the shipwreck, some saying March and others April 1835. There are also differences in the figures of those on board and the number of lives lost.) The copper nail is significant as an example of sailing ship construction; fasteners used in the early 19th century on ships carrying convicts to Australia. The nail is also significant for its association with the ship “George III”. The “George III” is registered on the Australian National Shipwreck Database, ID 7195 as an Historic Shipwreck. She is the third worst shipwreck in Tasmanian waters. She is also associated with Early Australian History and the transportation of convicts to Australia. The incident of the fire on board and the bravery of the convicts in making the gun powder safe is an example of the social character of the people in early Tasmanian colonisation. Copper nail (also called a Dumpy bolt or spike) from the convict ship George III, wrecked in 1835. Nail is long, bent in an ‘L’ shape about 3/5ths along, tapering from both ends to the bend. Both ends are flat and do not taper to a point, nor have a thread. The shorter end has been polished, showing bright copper. There is pitting along the nail and virdigris is evident on the longer, unpolished end. The nail is displayed with the longer section resting on a wooden board between two ‘U’ shaped uprights, the shorter section upright. flagstaff hill, warrnambool, shipwrecked coast, flagstaff hill maritime museum, maritime museum, shipwreck coast, flagstaff hill maritime village, great ocean road, george iii, ship construction, ship nail, 1835 shipwreck, 19th century shipwreck, william moxey, d'entrecasteaux channel, convict transportation, copper nail, dumpy bolt, spike, keel nail

Lifebuoy is from the ketch Reginald M, built in Port Adelaide by John Murch in 1922. Lifebuoys were part of the emergency lifesaving equipment carried on vessels in the late 19th and early 20th century. The ring was made of strips of cork wood joined together to make the ring shape then covered in canvas and sealed usually with white paint. Four evenly spaced canvas reinforcing bands would be added for strength and for a place to thread a rope or line. A lifebuoy, or life-preserver, is used as a buoyancy device often thrown to an endangered or distressed person in the water to keep them afloat while they receive help. It is usually connected by a rope to a person in a safe area such a nearby vessel or on shore. Lifebuoys is a made from a buoyant materials such as cork or foam and ae usually covered with canvas for protection and to make it easy to grip. The first use of life saving devices in recent centuries was by the Nordic people, who used light weight wood or cork blocks to keep afloat. Cork lifebuoys were used from the late 19th to early 20th century. Kapok fibre was then used as a filling for buoys but wasn’t entirely successful. Light weight balsa wood was used as a filler after WW1. In 1928 Peter Markus invented and patented the first inflatable life-preserver. By WW2 foam was combined with Kapok. Laws were passed over time that has required aeroplanes and water going-vessels to carry life-preservers on board. The Reginald M 1922- The two-masted coastal trading ketch Reginald M was built by John (Jack) Murch in Port Adelaide, South Australia, in 1922 and it was launched there in Largs Bay in the same year. It is thought that the keel was hewn from two telegraph poles - its owner was a regular visitor to salvage yards. Its cargo at times included Guano, Barley, Wool, Horses, Cattle, Timber, Explosives, Potatoes, Shell Grit and Gypsum. At one time the vessel was used as a customs boat, renamed 'HMC No. 3, Pt Adelaide'. In 1969 she was used by a mining and railway company as a barge to carry explosives. In 1972 the vessel was renamed 'T.S. Macquarie' and planned to be used for sea cadet training.; this did not eventuate. It was sold again and went to Melbourne to be used for pleasure sailing, and again sold for use as a ferry. Late in 1975 Flagstaff Hill purchased the vessel to be used as an exhibit at the Maritime Village where many visitors enjoyed being able to board and explore a real ship with a long history. Sadly, in late 2016, the decision was made to 'decommission' the vessel due to the continuing high cost of maintenance and the risk to public safety. Many of the components of the vessel are held as part of Flagstaff Hill's collection. The lifebuoy is an example of equipment carried on vessels in the late 19th and early 20th century to help preserve life. There were many lives lost in Australia’s colonial period, particularly along the coast of South West Victoria. A serving mallet is a tool to worm, parcel and serve a line and is to apply to the standing rigging multi-layered protection against chafe and deterioration. It is a technique not usually used on modern small boats but is found extensively on traditionally-rigged sailing ships. Worming, parcelling and serving —referred to collectively as "service"— is traditionally applied only to traditional twisted rope, either natural fibre or steel wire-rope, not the braided line almost exclusively used on modern vessels today. Parcelling means wrapping a rope line in a spiral fashion with long overlapping strips of thin canvas. This is wound from bottom to top, the edge of the progressing strip slightly overlapping the previous wrap to create a shingled effect, to prevent water from entering. Often the strips of the canvas are either saturated with Stockholm tar as they are applied, or painted with tar after the parcelling is complete, immediately before the process of serving. A serving provides an outer layer of protection and is formed by wrapping twine as tightly as possible around the line, each progressive turn of the twine laid as close as possible against the last, covering the rope completely. Following the rhyme above, it should have course run against the lay of the rope; this alternation helps prevent sideways chafe from opening up the protection. Traditionally hemp "marline" was and still is used for servicing on modern small craft with three-strand nylon "seine twine" often used. A serving board or serving mallet can be used to help get the outer twine as tight as possible. Despite the name (arising from its shape) the serving mallet is not used to hit anything, it forms a kind of guide and tensioning lever for applying the twine to the rope. An optional final stage for the permanent protection of "served" rope is to paint the outer layer of twine with a mixture of tar, varnish and black paint. This needs renewing periodically, and going aloft to paint foot ropes, shrouds, stays, and other served rigging is one of the regular maintenance tasks on many tall ships. The tar or "slush" is a mixture of Stockholm tar, boiled linseed oil, and Japan drier. Many "recipes" for slush exist, but the intent is always to allow a penetrating coat of preservative pine tar that then cures to a harder finish that will not so easily rub off on sails and crew. The term "slush" is also used to describe the grease applied to the masts to lubricate the “parallels” so that the yards can raise and lower freely.A tool used by sailors on board sailing ships as an aid in the preservation of ships rigging ropes by wrapping the rope in tar soaked canvas and covering the canvas by wrapping twine along the length of the rope. An item that is significant in that it tells a story of what sailors working lives were like onboard the early sailing ships and how these early vessels were maintained and sailed. The Reginald M was an early purchase of Flagstaff Hill Maritime Museum and Village, soon after it opened in 1975. It was restored and then used as an exhibit in the maritime Village. The reason for the bullet being within the pieces of timber is unknown. The Reginald M's history does not suggest a time when weapons were used. However, the vessel's construction included used materials from different sources; perhaps the bullet was within these materials, which later became part of the Reginald M. ‘REGINALD M’ 1922 to 1975- The vessel “Reginald M” was a two-masted coastal ketch, owned and built by Mr Jack (John) Murch of Birkenhead, Port of Adelaide, South Australia. The donor was a seamen at Port Adelaide, where this photogrpah of the ketch, Reginald M, was taken in 1945. Wagons could load and unload directly from their sides. Its cargo included Guano, Barley, Wool, Horses, Cattle, Timber, Explosives, Potatoes, Shell Gritt, and Gypsum. On April 9th 1931, Reginald M weathered a large storm in St Vincent Gulf, SA. The vessel suffered great damage; the mast snapped, and the crew laboured for four hours to free it by chopping off the mast and rigging. The crew patched it up and slowly returned to Port Adelaide with only a portion of the insured cargo being damaged. The crew members at the time were the owner, Mr John H Murch of Wells Street, Largs Bay; Skipper Mr R Murch, John’s brother; Murray, son of Captain Murch; and Seaman John Smith. Since its invention there have been many safety features added in certain industries such as window cleaning and painting.Bosuns chair, rectangular slab of wood with two holes at both ends through which rope ends are threaded for support and the loops above the seat are tied with sailor's knotting to form a triangle. flagstaff hill, warrnambool, maritime village, maritime museum, flagstaff hill maritime museum & village, shipwreck coast, great ocean road, bosun's chair, bosuns chair, boatswains chair, rigging, maritime equipment, bosun's seat, life saving, marine technology, ship rigging

The website: austinmemories.com provides a list of extracts from the Austin Motor company archive and makes mention that in WW2 some 3,500 lifeboats were provided for ships. In the link above there is also reference to airborne lifeboats. It seems that the Austin 8HP so-called lifeboat motor was very often re-used by boating enthusiasts which would account for the publication or e-issue? of this manual in 1986. It seems likely that this temperamental engine was still of interest to people like ship's engineers.Mariner Duncan had a particular regard for the Mission to Seafarers. This plate for display on a commissioned new table at the MTSV chapel acknowledges his bequest and the material donated. Collectively the G W Duncan material includes: photographs, professional data memorabilia and written and commercially printed resources. The memorabilia relates to his career at sea and in particular the role of an engineer, including a handwritten manual of notes and references relating to the mechanical and engineering aspects and areas of responsibility for maintenance.
