These strong riveted and sealed iron boxes were made in England in the 1930s to ensure overseas cargoes such as china, pottery, fabrics, tea and sugar were not damaged by sea water. Clever Australians later converted them to water tanks. An early example of the modern shipping container concept. Cubed iron ship tanks were invented by Richard Trevithich in 1808, in partnership with Robert Dickson, and the design was patented that year. The invention eventually replaced the wooden casks or barrels used at the time, as the ship tanks were more secure and their shape was much more economical in storage space. The robust metal tanks were originally made to transport water, but their preserving quality enabled them to transport perishable dry goods such as grain on long voyages, as well as other forms of liquid and solid cargo. The first ship tanks were made from sheets of iron, and later mild steel sheets, with double riveted edges and corners. A round cast iron lid with handle grips was fitted snugly into the top opening, providing an air-tight and water-tight seal. Brass taps were often fitted into the base, which could have been the case with this tank, but it now has a wooden bung in the hole. Sailing ships began using the new ship tanks on Australian voyages from around the 1830s, storing food and water for those on board, and filling them with other cargo. A large number of the ship tanks were repurposed in 1838 for the Victoria Settlement at Port Essington, N.T., as they were able to protect the food, clothing and other stores from termite and insect damage. Other ‘recycled’ ship tanks were cut in half and used as washing tubs or cookers. A 1929 catalogue from Hudson’s Tank Stores advertised square tanks that contained around 600 litres – 160 gallons – which equals an internal measurement of 33.25 inches – 84.5 centimetres – per side ship tanks are still made and sold in 1952 by the Globe Tank and Foundry in Wolverhampton, England, which was incorporated in 1922. Today, ship tanks can be seen around Australia. Wilsonson’s Promontory Lightstation has the lid from a ship tank that was used on site for the storage of water. Some have been repurposed as domestic water tanks and dog kennels, others for eucalyptus distilleries. Flagstaff Hill has two ship tanks. The Campaspe Port at Echuca, once a bustling river port, has a ship tank beside the locomotive yard. The lids of ship tanks are collectible items. Richard Trevithick (1771-1833): - Trevithick was born in 1771 in Cornwall, England. He was a famous British engineer and inventor during the Industrial Revolution, known for his invention of the first full-scale working railway, the high-pressure steam locomotive, which he demonstrated hauling a railway train in 1804. He set up a small workshop in 1808 at 72 Fore Street, Limehouse, London, to make iron ship tanks, and this invention was instrumental in replacing the wooden casks formerly used for storage on ships. He was involved with mining technology, iron foundry and ship equipment. Ship tanks changed the way that cargo was transported on ships and other vehicles from the 1830s and were used into the mid-20th century. The ship tanks’ advantages were that they could store more content, lasted longer, were waterproof and airtight, stackable and could be repurposed for many uses other than water, such as fuel, dry goods and domestic cargo. They have even been used aa dog kennels and cookers. Ship tanks were part of the evolving methos to transport water, food and cargo, which changed in 1956 when Malcolm McLean invented the large, rectangular shipping containers that are in use today; they speed up the process of loading on and off the ships, saving time and money. Ship tank: a cubed iron container with an offset hole on one side. The hole has cutouts for securely attaching a lid. This tank is on its side on the ground with the opening facing sideways. The side facing upwards has a wooden bung in a round hole. The ship tank is made from six square, thick iron sheets, rolled and riveted along the edges. The inside has a black sticky coating, possibly bitumen, and a strong creosote odour. The original barrel was tapered outwards from top to base. It had three iron bands. Only the top and base remain. Barrels with outward tapering bases are balanced and stable. Barrels contain a wide range of contents, both liquid and dry, from wines and spirits to cement. Ships have used barrels as shipping containers for cargo. Specially made rope slings were used to move the barrels to and from the ships by rope blocks and cranes. A huge quantity of cement was brought to Warrnambool in barrels to construct the Breakwater, which was completed in 1890.This parts of a wooden barrel represent the containers used for cargo imported from England into Australia in the 19th and early 20th centuries. As an example, the vessel Edinburgh Castle was wrecked in Lady Bay, Warrnambool, in 1888. The cargo onboard was a consignment of casks, or barrels of cement for the construction of Warrnambool’s new Breakwater, which was completed in 1890. Photo album detailing the process involved in the Jumbo Wool Auction Service. This process was developed by Grazcos, a company who advanced innovations for shearers and wool farmers before amalgamating with Dalgety in the early 1990s. Grazcos was a well-known name to source a competent shearing team, or as a destination for wool in need of bulk classing. The Jumbo Wool Auction service was designed to process wool more efficiently through volume. 63 traditionally dumped farm bales of wool would fill a typical shipping container. The Jumbo Wool Auction Service enabled 108 farm bales to fit into the same container. This brought reductions in the costs of handling, selling, storing, and shipping of wool. This photo album details this process; from classing to shipping. This photo album was a draft copy produced for review before the production of mass-produced advertising flyers. 12-page hard cover photo album. Internally colour images and printed text have been stuck behind a protective plastic onto paper. The backing paper has many distinctive orange and grey horizontal lines. Printed text is in black ink. Colour images are 2 x 3 inches with rounded corners. Images and text are numbered 1 to 16 detailing the process of the Jumbo Wool Auction Service developed by Grazcos.wool auction, wool processing, grazcos

Olympic Cables began as part of Olympic Tyres in Footscray in 1940, became Olympic Cables Ltd in 1946, and later merged with Nylex in 1973 to form Olex Cables. The Tottenham site functioned as a major cable manufacturing and distribution facility, operating through the 1950s–1990s as part of the Olympic, Olex, National Cables and Nexans lineage. In 1981, Pacific Dunlop purchased Olex Cables. They also acquired Burton Cables and Spinaway Cables, merging all three operations. In 1994, Burton and Spinaway were merged into National Cables by the Pacific Dunlop. In 1999, a management buyout created an independent Cables Group and in 2006, Nexans (France) acquired Olex, forming Nexans Olex. The Tottenham site’s industrial footprint gradually wound down as operations consolidated into newer facilities at other sites. The Tottenham site was progressively decommissioned; buildings were demolished or repurposed. The site today is a large shipping container and transport hub. This aerial photograph not only shows the expansive Olympic Cables Factory site, but in the foreground, the White City Railway Station, in the centre, the City of Footscray Quarry, and at top, the Somerville Road Wool Stores and Smorgans.olympic cables, sunshine road, tottenham, city of footscray quarry, white city railway station

These photographs, taken by The Advocate in 1991, are of employees of the Nestle Factory located at Margrave Street & West Esplanade St. Albans. Feature in the photographs are Gary Tickle (Manager), Lorraine Bell (Accounts Receivable Clerk), Arthur Marney (Storeman Forklift Driver) & Joe Almenara (Storeman Forklift Driver). The Nestle's factory was the company's massive sales and distribution centre for the whole of Victoria, Tasmania & South Australia. The factory was also involved in the stocking of shipping containers for the export to the Pacific Islands. Nestle's products include Nescafe or Andronics Coffee, Carnation Milk, Maggi Soups, Milo, Quik and so on. The factory employed nearly 100 people, 24 in the warehouse, 56 as casual merchandisers and the rest in the office. This site was formerly occupied by the Pacific Cans Factory, a venture established by a Japanese consortium to supply beverage cans to Carlton and United Breweries. The factory subsequently closed following the loss of its contract with the brewing company. The Advocate’s feature on local traders was a modest yet well‑liked column that played a meaningful role in strengthening community identity. Through these regular profiles, the newspaper promoted local businesses and helped shape St. Albans' understanding of its developing commercial district.7390.01 - Nestle Factory Margrave Street St. Albans 1991 Photographs (Advocate 173.3).JPG Gary Tickle 7390.02 - Nestle Factory Margrave Street St. Albans 1991 Photographs (Advocate 173.3).JPG Lorraine Bell 7390.03 - Nestle Factory Margrave Street St. Albans 1991 Photographs (Advocate 173.3).JPG Arthur Marney & Joe Almenaranestle, margrave street, west esplanade, st. albans, pacific cans

These photographs, taken by The Advocate in 1988, feature the Arundel Road Bridge spanning the Maribyrnong River at Keilor. At the time, the timber bridge was still carrying vehicle traffic between Keilor, Keilor North and Bulla, while its concrete replacement can be seen in the background. The Arundel Road Bridge was one of the most historically significant river crossings in Melbourne's west and a rare surviving timber trestle bridge associated with the Closer Settlement movement and the early agricultural development of the Keilor district. For many decades, it provided an important transport link across the Maribyrnong River for local residents, farmers and travellers. In 1991, the City of Keilor proposed demolishing the bridge due to the high costs of restoration and ongoing maintenance. Following strong community opposition and heritage advocacy, the decision was later reversed. The bridge subsequently became a symbol of local heritage conservation and community action. The bridge's history encompasses construction challenges, flood damage, preservation campaigns, restoration works and eventual closure. In 2022, the structure was destroyed when a shipping container struck the bridge during the major Maribyrnong River floods, bringing an end to one of the district's most recognisable historic landmarks. These photographs were taken shortly before the new concrete bridge opened just upstream in 1989. They offer a rare glimpse of vehicles using the old timber trestle bridge in its final years.6853.01 - Arundel Road Bridge Keilor 1988 Photographs (Advocate 537.2).JPG 6853.02 - Arundel Road Bridge Keilor 1988 Photographs (Advocate 537.2).JPG 6853.03 - Arundel Road Bridge Keilor 1988 Photographs (Advocate 537.2).JPGarundel road bridge, arundel farm, maribyrnong river, keilor

This is the site of the first roadside art gallery - Hassall's Roadside Gallery created by the artist son of an artist. Ian Hassall was the son of John Hassall who was among and may have been the first of the British poster artists. The gallery opened Saturday July 14, 1962 at 1215 Main road, Eltham by the director of the National Gallery of Victoria, Eric Westbrook. Situated on the left hand side of the main road, about a mile and a half beyond Eltham, towards Research, near Coleman's Corner at the intersection of Wattletree Road. The property has remnants of a stone quarry, probably for the purpose of gaining stone for local road making. Paintings were hung on screens and removed at night for safety. Large pedestals displayed sculpture and jewellery. All types of hand made art work was displayed. Access to the exhibition and grounds was slightly lower than the level of the road. They were encircled by a narrow little moat formed by a small tributary of the Diamond Creek accessed by a small well built stone bridge built by Ian Hassall with local stone. The Gallery later became known as Hassall's Gallery Bazaar antiques, furniture, curios bought and sold. It operated through to the early 1990s. The property has been derelict and neglected for some years. At one stage a shipping container sat near the entrance. This series of ten photographs illustrate the extent of the vegetation which has taken over the land, evidence of rubbish and a possible fire. In July 2017, planning permission was sought from the Shire of Nillumbik for buildings and works to construct a dwelling and associated vegetation removal.
