Domestic object - Shoe Stretcher
Shoe stretchers were commonly used by cobblers and shoe repairers in the 19th and early 20th centuries to adjust the fit of leather shoes. They were particularly useful for breaking in new shoes or accommodating foot conditions such as bunions. Unlike modern wooden or plastic stretchers, this all-metal design is more industrial and may have been used in shoemaking workshops rather than for personal home use.The item is a vintage metal shoe stretcher, a tool used for expanding the width of leather shoes to improve fit and comfort. It consists of two long, flat metal arms that taper at the ends, connected by a central hinge with a rounded handle for applying force. The metal arms open and close when pressure is applied, allowing the tool to be inserted into a shoe and expanded to stretch the material. The stretcher has a rusted, aged appearance, indicating significant use over time. shoe stretcher, shoes, bookmaker, household item, commercial equipment -

Footwear - Ladies Black Shoes
These shoes appear to be handmade by a local cobbler, possibly dating to the early to mid-20th century. Handmade shoes were common before the rise of industrial mass production, especially in rural areas or among working-class women. The lace-up design was practical, allowing for an adjustable fit. They could have been used as everyday footwear or possibly for formal occasions, depending on the original finish. The craftsmanship suggests they were made to be durable and repairable, in line with historical shoemaking practices.A pair of black or dark-colored handmade ladies’ shoes, appearing well-worn and aged. They have a classic lace-up design, with multiple eyelets for laces, though the laces are missing. The shoes have a rounded toe and a low-profile structure, suggesting they were made for everyday wear. The leather surface shows signs of wear, scuffing, and some dust accumulation, indicating age and use.shoes, boots, bootmaker, shoemaker, cobbler, clothing, household item -

The Beechworth Burke Museum
Photograph, Between 1946 and 1961
... shoemaking ...Elgin Shoes Pty., Ltd., established a branch shoe factory in Beechworth in 1946. Managing director, Mr T Nagle Pitman, selected Beechworth as a suitable location for the factory due to the availability of labour in the town, particularly girls under sixteen years of age. At its peak, the shoe factory employed thirty six women and girls, which also included post-war migrants. After the Second World War, Australia admitted increasing numbers of immigrants in order to fulfil labour requirements for a rapidly inflating demand of consumer goods. These migrants were largely from European Countries in line with the ‘White Australia Policy’. In 1954 Beechworth had 170 migrants from the UK, 102 from Hungary, and 63 from Germany. The factory closed in 1961 as increased centralisation of both populations and industry in the larger nearby towns of Wangaratta and Wodonga lead to the closure of many factories in small towns in the 1960s and 1970s. This photograph is historically significant as it shows the working conditions in a factory primarily staffed by women at some point between the late 1940s and early 1960s. Award - Pewter Mug Trophies - Ross and Malcolm Milne - Molony Cup 1966 - Third
This Pewter Mug Collection is a set of 32 trophies won by Australian Alpine skiers Ross and Malcolm Milne between 1959 and 1964. Ross and Malcolm grew up on their family's tobacco property in Myrtleford, and began skiing at Falls Creek at an early age. They were both taught by Austrian Sigi Haberzettl, who was chief coach at Falls Creek for 17 years. Ross went on to win the North-Eastern District Ski Association (NEDSA) Junior Championships for three years in a row. In 1961 Ross was a member of the Australian team which competed against New Zealand in the Inter-Dominion Championships. In 1963, he won the Downhill and Alpine Combined title at the Australian Championships, while placing second in the Grand Slalom event. Ross Milne was selected in the Australian team that participated in the 1964 Olympic Winter Games at Innsbruck, Austria. A few days before the opening of the Games, on 25 January 1964, he tragically lost his life when he crashed into a tree during a training run for the Men's Downhill. He was only 19 years of age. Malcolm became a member of the Australian Junior Ski Team to Japan at the age of 14. He won all of the NEDSA children’s races and won the State Title in 1966. Malcolm continued to achieve great success, winning the Australian Championships for the next five years. At the end of 1969 he won Gold in the Val d'Isere FIS Alpine Ski World Cup Downhill, Australia's first Alpine Ski World Cup medal. He was on the Australian National Ski Team for eight years, representing his country at the 1968 and 1972 Olympic Games and the 1966 and 1970 World Championships before turning professional in 1972. Malcolm Milne was inducted into the Sport Australia Hall of Fame in 1985. In 2000 he received the Australian Sports Medal for his contribution to skiing. In 2004, Ski & Snowboard Australia granted Milne Life Membership for the contribution he made to the sport by becoming the first World Cup medal winner in Australian winter sports history, and the subsequent impact his performances have had on future athletes. Malcolm Milne was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) for services to skiing in 2016. James Malony originally established his business in 1854 in King Street Melbourne. The family owned business of J. Molony initially specialised in shoemaking.
