Improving meat production In 1905, the English firm Thomas Borthwick & Son set up operations in Australia. Borthwick was a major meat exporter and ran freezing works as well as having its own cattle stations in Australia. From the early 19th century, Borthwick encouraged the production of quality beef by awarding prizes at agricultural shows throughout Australia. In the early 1950s the Australian Meat Board and The Royal Agricultural Society of Victoria (RASV) also took steps to encourage beef producers. Perpetual Trophy For the Coronation Show in 1953, Borthwick introduced a perpetual trophy. The Borthwick Trophy was awarded to the Fat Cattle Champion with the winner being judged from the best team of three steers under three years old. The winning team was the one that gained the highest aggregate score from both the live and carcase judging. Initially, the relevant winning Breed Society retained the trophy for a year and returned it for the following Royal Melbourne Show but the Borthwick Trophy is now displayed at the Melbourne Royal offices on the Melbourne Showgrounds. However places in the township of Maddingley which did not appear until the late 1880s such as the Bacchus Marsh Railway Station and line are shown on this map in their correct locations. This suggests the map has been derived from an earlier map. An earlier date of 1843 with a surveyor's name preceding it can also be seen on the map. The map is important because it indicates the location and dimensions of early but now discontinued use of land such as the showgrounds and police paddock and a site reserved for the Church of England which was not ultimately used for a permanent church. Arthur William Pulfer was born on 18 April 1918, in Bendigo, Victoria, Australia, his father, Harold Victor Pulfer, was 30 and his mother, Elsie Maud Rumball, was 26. He married Norma Stewart in Bendigo, Victoria, Australia. He died on 6 March 2001, in his hometown, at the age of 82, and was buried in the Bendigo Cemetery. 1965 fire at the Bendigo Railway Station A dull explosion in the refreshment room about 1:30 p.m. touched off the blaze, which quickly spread and burnt out the station in less than an hour. Just before the explosion a train carrying more than 200 Melbourne-bound holiday makers pulled out of the station. Scores of railways employees in other parts of the station did not realise the refreshment room was on fire until a signal box attendant gave the alarm. Early estimates place damage at more than £100,000. Quick work by station staff saved many thousands of pounds worth of equipment before flames engulfed the building from end to end. At the height of the blaze, a Bendigo fire brigade Station Officer, Vin Lapsley, fell 18 feet – and miraculously landed on his feet – after being overcome by smoke while directing a hose from a ladder on to the roof.
