For Hitler's forces the conquest of Egypt, and the rich oil fields of the Middle East, lie next on the horizon. All that stand in their way are a few Australian brigades defending a town called Tobruk. For eight months the Australian Imperial Forces defended the North African coastal fortress, battling almost unbeatable odds in the dust and the heat of the Libran desert. These photographs were donated by the son of Favell Ellis Wilson Clyde. Clyde was from Holbrook, near Albury, and had originally enlisted in the 2/23rd battalion AIF, “Albury's Own”. Early in 1941 Clyde was transferred to the support column of the 9th Division, taking the rank of Driver. After service in the Middle East his unit served in New Guinea and the Islands. These photographs are of stock images, falling into two main groups - low quality, retouched images of the battlefield and harbour, and high quality images of various buildings in Tobruk. An interesting aspect of the images are that the are mostly printed on German Agfa Lupex photo stock, likely left behind by the Axis forces as they retreated. 10795.11P is an image of Tobruk cemetery, during the siege. It mentions Cpl Johnson - John Leslie Johnson VX42266, and Cpl Joy - Patrick Joy VX46250, both of the 2/23rd Battalion, both from Albury, killed during the siege, and likely friends of Clyde. The Siege of Tobruk Medal was originally available to Australian, New Zealand, British, Indian and Polish troops who saw action during the Siege of Tobruk, between April and December 1941. The medal was commissioned and issued by the Rats of Tobruk Association in 1977. The medal was available to 18 BDE, 24 BDE, 26 BDE, 2/1 PIONEER's and other miscellaneous units. Some RAAF, Free French Air Force and Canadian personnel attached to the Royal Navy were included.This is not an official medal. On December 16 1940 the 2/24th Battalion arrived at Dimra Camp in Palestine prior to and following the Siege of Tobruk in 1941The 2/24th Battalion was an infantry battalion of the Australian Army, which served during World War II .A unit of all-volunteers, it was formed in July 1940 from primarily Victorian volunteers and was known as "Wangaratta's Own" because of the time the battalion spent in the town during its formative period prior to deployment overseas. It served in North Africa in 1941–1942 as part of the 26th Brigade, which was assigned to the 7th Division, before being reassigned to the 9th Division. In early 1943, the battalion returned to Australia and later took part in campaigns against the Japanese in New Guinea in 1943–1944 and Borneo in 1945, before being disbanded in 1946. The 2/24th suffered the highest number of casualties of any 2nd AIF infantry battalion. The Unit was granted the Freedom of the City by the Rural City of Wangaratta in 1996 and one of the first, if not the first, to receive this type of honour. The Rats of Tobruk were soldiers of the Australian-led Allied garrison that held the Libyan port of Tobruk against the Afrika Corps, during the Siege of Tobruk in World War II. The siege started on 11 April 1941 and was relieved on 10 December. The port continued to be held by the Allies until its surrender on 21 June 1942. HUTCHINS, Mervyn Arthur Thomas VX27912 Born in Mornington, Victoria, October 1906, Mervyn joined the Australian Armed Forces in Caulfield in June 1940. Mervyn was posted with the 2/23rd Battalion and was sent to Tobruk. He died at Heidelberg Repatriation Hospital in the 1970'sMervyn Hutchins owned this jacket. In May 1941, a Bendigo soldier, Peter Odium, came across dead bodies being whipped by a Sahara sandstorm.
