Possibly used in the Orbost district. Railway lamps of this kind were hand signalling lamps used by train guards, shunters and sometimes signalmen and station staff. They could signal the locomotive crew at night to let them know what to do (move forward/move backward/right-of-way) when leaving a station, goods yard or siding.
Railway lamps of this kind were significant railway items in their period of use as essential tools to the safe-working operations of the railway.
Two railway signal lamps. These are kerosene burning lamps made of metal and painted red. Both lamps have carrying handles at the top.
