Slate pencils were used extensively in primary schools throughout The Netherlands.These pencils may have belonged to a child who attended school either towards the end of or post WWII when there was a scarcity of paper and books. Rectangular light green cardboard container which slides open to reveal 7 slate pencils. The lid is busily illustrated with scenes of English Victories on Sea and Land including Trafalgar and Waterloo. The upper halves of the slate pencils are covered in paper decorated with various designs.In the left margin of the picture are the words: "Designed in England". Underneath the Trafalgar scene is the quotation: "England expects that every man this day will do his duty." Under the Waterloo scene is the quotation: "Up Guards and at them!" This particular box of brass drawing pins would have been used before the introduction of cheaper polished chrome drawing pins manufactured in Asia. The box construction and label would suggest that supply of this boxes contents could have been in the early 1950's. Drawing pins or push pins were first invented in 1900 by Mr Edwin Moore. The need for a secure fastener to accommodate temporary signs and notes for domestic and commercial environments sprang up from the need to cope with an increasing faster method of presenting information on removable surfaces such as temporary notice boards. In the 1950's and later the increase in the pace of "living" brought about many time saving written communication notices. This temporary method of providing fast temporary notices is being surpassed by the computer age and mobile telephone "applications". The information spectrum of the computer age has made many "hands on" (drawing pin) applications go to the "dodo" level. This box of drawing pins is very significant to the Kiewa Valley and its region because it demonstrates that the pace in rural regions especially those that were once semi remote regions has moved at the same pace as the bigger towns and cities. Differences are still noticeable, such as the requirement of drawing pins for temporary signs and mail box commercially important "sales" notifications. The pressures that produce the "rat" syndrome, that is pressure by increased population levels infringing upon the individual's day-to-day existence is still not present in rural areas such as the Kiewa Valley. Drawing pins are still a requirement for leased accommodation (which are usually short term accommodation) for the personalisation of "home" wall decorations and shopper's "notice and information boards"This small box, similar to a "match box" (thumb activated slide, top open, cardboard container), holds brass drawing pins. These brass pins are also known as brass tacks, thumbtacks or push pins. The top of the brass tack has a "domed head" with the manufacturer's logo stamped on it. The number "2" on the bottom right of the label is the "weight" of the drawing pin. The owner of this textbook, Cornelius Cooke Reed, was an early settler. He was born in England and lived and died at Portland, Victoria (ca. 1880 - 23 June 1876). The Hamilton Spectator printed his Obituary: "The death of Mr. Cornelius C. Reed, a very old resident of Portland, is reported." The Portland Guardian reported on 23 December 1857, that "Cornelius C. Reed obtained a Hawker's license for the year 1868". The book was used with gauging tools to calculate the quantity of liquid in a cask or barrel. The calculation could then be used to charge a fee or tax. The book would have been used in the 18th or 19th centuries, when Customs and Tariffs were calculated manually.This book is important for its use in the centuries before modern technology. It was used to calculate the quantity of liquid in a container such as a cask or barrel. It would have been used to work out alcohol taxes or charges for freight and cartage. It represents an early mathematical reference, which was later replaced by slide rules, calculators and computers. Tartar Emetic was a powerful emetic used during the nineteenth and twentieth century, though, it had been known of since the middle ages, which was used to widely treat a variety of infections and aliments. However, this medicine was known to cause multiple serious side effects and would be discontinued from use by the mid to late twentieth century. Unknown chalk. Aperient Pills are a drug used to relieve constipation. Calomel was once used as a purgative to remove unwanted waste from one's body. Calomel is a mercurous chloride mineral and looks like a white powder. Unfortunately, when used in high does, which was common during its use in the eighteenth century, it caused many side effects due to it inducing mercury poisoning. Many of the side effects however, were perceived as the medicine working properly , which only perpetuated its use until it was eventually removed from medical practice in the nineteenth century, being determined that it was more harmful than remedial.The left one of two marching medium sized wood drawers. Ipecacuan powder, or Dover's powder, was a common emetic used through the eighteenth and nineteenth century as a sudorific and prescribed for colds, coughs, insomnia, rheumatism, pleurisy, and dysentery. Gum arabic was often used as an additive to promote binding of other ingredients to a liquid medium. Likely gum arabic was not prescribed by itself even though there are some health benefits for doing so, such as slowing the rate of absorption of some drugs within the gut. Camphor was a stimulant, narcotic and sudorific and was administered in pill form which included part ipecacuanha and opium to non acute fevers and remedy chromic rheumatism, as part of a liquid mixture to treat violent headaches as well as rheumatism, or in a solid form stored in a small bag worn around a patient's neck as a preservative against infection. The purpose and contents of the case are unknown. However, the word "Kwairobai" has been used in a group of words listed as solid fuels - coal, coke, fire wood, charcoal and spunk and ‘Kwairobai’ - in a 1939 book 'Consular Reports Issue 31' in reference to the publication of Japanese Trade-marks. This particular Trade-mark, No. 53, is a "cross in a triangle". the maker was To. Jinjudo of Osaka, Japan. This case belonged to Dr William Roy Angus and is now part of Flagstaff Hill’s comprehensive W.R. Angus Collection, donated by the family of Dr W R Angus, 1901-1970, surgeon and oculist. The W.R. Angus Collection: - The W.R. Angus Collection includes historical medical equipment, surgical instruments and material belonging to Dr Edward Ryan and Dr Thomas Francis Ryan, (both of Nhill, Victoria) and Dr Angus’ own belongings. The Collection’s history spans the medical practices of the two Doctors Ryan, from 1885-1926 plus that of Dr Angus, up until 1969. It includes historical medical and surgical equipment and instruments from the doctors Edward and Thomas Ryan of Nhill, Victoria. Dr Angus married Gladys in 1927 at Ballarat, the nearest big city to Nhill where he began as a Medical Assistant. He was also Acting House surgeon at the Nhill hospital where their two daughters were born. During World War II He served as a Military Doctor in the Australian Defence Force. Dr Angus and his family moved to Warrnambool in 1939, where Dr Angus operated his own medical practice. He later added the part-time Port Medical Officer responsibility and was the last person appointed to that position. Both Dr Angus and his wife were very involved in the local community, including the planning stages of the new Flagstaff Hill and the layout of the gardens there. Dr Angus passed away in March 1970.This case is an example of objects belonging to Dr. W. R. Angus, 1901-1970, surgeon and oculist. The W.R. Angus Collection is significant for still being located at the site it is connected with, Doctor Angus being the last Port Medical Officer in Warrnambool. The Collection includes historical medical objects that date back to the late 1800s.Case, a rectangular brass case neatly covered in brown velvet fabric with a paper label attached. It has a long sliding cover with three rows of cutout stars with a red background, and a decorative brass thumb grip at one end that has three Japanese characters on it. Inside are three cylindrical rolls of white fabric with unknown contents. The label has English and Japanese text, and a logo with three Japanese characters. It was made by To. On 15th December 1909, Bryant & May, Australia’s first match factory at Church Street, Richmond, Victoria. was opened by The Honourable Alfred Deakin, Prime Minister of Australia, and Mrs. Deakin. It was heralded by the first Commonwealth Government of newly-federated Australia because the government of the day was anxious to encourage secondary industry and pledged tariff protection of local manufacturers. The building was constructed in 1909 as the Empire Works to a design by prolific Melbourne architect William Pitt and was purchased soon after by British safety match manufacturer Bryant and May, who significantly expanded the building, adding another level and the landmark clock tower. Bryant and May were unique in that they operated as a model factory, providing workers with conditions and amenities that even today seem generous. These included a dining hall and sports facilities such as a tennis court and bowling green which were constructed in the 1920s. Bryant and May ceased Australian match manufacture in the early 1980s as a result of import competition. Their iconic Redheads matches are now imported from Sweden. The complex has since been converted for use as offices and showrooms but is extremely well preserved. It is listed on the Victorian Heritage Register. Bryant and May was a United Kingdom (UK) company created in the mid-nineteenth century specifically to make matches. Their original Bryant and May Factory was located in Bow, London. They later opened other match factories in the United Kingdom and Australia, such as the Bryant and May Factory, Melbourne; and owned match factories in other parts of the world. Bryant and May survived as an independent company for over seventy years, but went through a series of mergers with other match companies and later with consumer products companies. To protect its position Bryant and May merged with or took over its rivals. In 1971 the Northern Ireland factory, Maguire & Patterson closed down following a terrorist attack.. In the 1980s, factories in Gloucester and Glasgow closed too leaving Liverpool as the last match factory in the UK, until December 1994. . The registered trade name Bryant and May still exists and it is owned by Swedish Match, as are many of the other registered trade names of the other, formerly independent, companies within the Bryant and May group. Two French chemists, Henri Savene and Emile David Cahen, proved in 1898 that the addition of phosphorus sesquisulfide meant that the substance was not poisonous, that it could be used in a "strike-anywhere" match, and that the match heads were not explosive. British company Albright and Wilson, was the first company to produce phosphorus sesquisulfide ( Red Phosphorous) matches commercially. The company developed a safe means of making commercial quantities of phosphorus sesquisulfide in 1899 and started selling it to match manufacturers. Matches were first produced by Bryant & May in Australia in 1909. The Redhead name applies to the red striking heads of the matches which were introduced to Australia in 1946. The logo on the matchbox depicted the head and shoulder of a redheaded woman and has had four major updates since that time with a number of special issues depicting birds, animals and notable persons also produced.The Bryant & May Ltd factory in Church St Richmond is a listed building and has been converted to apartments following the closure of the Company 1980. Bryant & May's Ltd were influential in fighting against the dreadful disease known as Phossy jaw which was caused by white phosphorus used in the manufacture of the early matches. They were also the object of the 'Match Girls Strike' in London 1888, which won important improvements in working conditions and pay for the mostly female workforce working with the dangerous white phosphorus. At the turn of the 20th century cigarette smoking was widely adopted, and elegant smoking accessories became a necessity and items such as this desk dispenser became a popular trend for fashionable men and women. Evidence of trends in the early 1900s.Rectangle metal cigarette dispenser mounted offset on a dark green painted timber base. The tin slides up on an inlay wall rail allowing the tin to slide up and down but not come of the wall.
